OS
Windows 11\Home
This is a one user operation, apologies for the long wind.
The machine’s application:
  • Box-a: 24/7/365 --the priority task’s are:
    • run surveillance software over the Lan
      • records and stores footage to multiple usb storage devices
    • run RoboCopy daily, transfering GB’s of video
    • SMB share’s
    • Streaming on rare occasion’s
  • Box-b: Same as box-a (as needed), without the 24/7/365 recording. Is a back-up, should ‘a’ go down
  • Box-c: Average task’s including SMB
Boxes a and b, are the hot ticket items, Win-11\Home, on which these issues occur. The list below includes ongoing and recent issue’s, that are not in any priority order because, Win-11\Home, randomly tossing new issues into the mix; during or post reboot.

  • File Explorer: Still gathering supporting image’s
  • OS sign-in: Inconsistent result’s (priority)
  • Reboot\Restart issue’s: Randomly altering “System Setting’s” (priority)
  • "Task Scheduler": Randomly will not run "custom\scheduled task", that have previously run on-time. Frequency with this issue is increasing. This began in the last two weeks.
THE GOAL(s): Daily, via "Task Scheduler", run a couple of batch file's (.bat), restart the OS then, without a password, login and land on the desktop, “Task Scheduler” will start a couple of applications; entirely unattended. Given the problem's listed below, I cannot leave these machine's unattended for any length of time; especially box-a.

THE SHORT VERSION:
  • Signing-in to the OS, I have removed the password from the only local account (Admin), after a reboot the system will not consistently log the user-on and land on the desktop. After a reboot with such a configured account, the OS can and will toggle between any one of the following:
    • after a seemingly successful reboot, instead of signing-in, the user will remain at the sign-in screen. In this case, moving forward to sign into this --password-less Admin-account, by left-clicking "Sign-In", will trigger any one or all of the following:
      • The account will be locked or,
      • when access is granted, the previous reboot process will have altered one or more “System Setting’s”, that will go unnoticed until the user is unable to perform a task; e.g. SMB from a remote machine.
  • Reboot\Restart Issue’s:
    • Randomly and intermittently alters “System Setting’s”, to include, but not limited to:
      • “Function Discovery Provider Host” and “Function Discovery Resource Publication” (priority)
        • With the “Startup type” initially set to ‘Automatic’, post reboot will --stop one or more of these Services, in addition to (respectively), altering the “Startup type” to ‘Manual’.
  • “WiFi\Network profile type”: post rebooting will alter the “WiFi\Network profile type” from Private to Public.
I'm requesting guidance as to 'what' term/topic I should be researching, that will address --what could/would prompt the reboot process to alter any "System Setting" when nothing was added or changed on the machine(s)?

THE HARDWARE OS INFO:
  1. Box-a -- Edition: Windows 11 Home, Version: 23H2, Installed on: ‎6/‎9/‎2024, OS build: 22631.4169; the box with the most problems
  2. Box-b -- Edition: Windows 11 Home, Version: 23H2, Installed on: ‎2/27/‎2024, OS build: 22631.4169; has some of the same issue's as box-a
  3. Box-c -- Edition: Windows 10 Pro, Version: 22H2, Installed on: 6/‎18/‎2022, OS build: 19045.4780; under control
  4. Galaxy smartphone -- Android version: 10
NOTE-01: No machine involved in this thread uses any online assistance to log\sign-in; especially not a [Microsoft Account]. All account profile\data is stored on each individual machine. No ‘DOMAIN’ is employed; all machines involved are within the exact same WorkGroup; on the same Lan\subnet.

NOTE-02: Hours ago box-b was allowed access to all SMB share's provided by any machine connected to the Lan. Currently, box-a refuses to allow box-b access to its SMB shares. They see one another on the Lan, but box-a is not playing nice; with box-b. Box-b's current attempt's to access box-a's\SMB share's result in the attached: 2024-09-28 084637_Cannot_MSI_.png. However, box-a is allowing every other device listed in this thread, access to its SMB share's. Box-b is allowing all network connected devices access to its SMB share's, including box-a. Box-b can also access every other machines' SMB share's; except box-a.
For trouble-shooting purposes the firewalls are turned off, --for every machine listed in this thread; all ports are not blocked. This is purely the OS causing problem's. Please review the additional images of box-a's System and Service setting's, that I know to be associated with "Network Sharing" and/or SMB:

If I missed some items, please advise.

HISTORY:
The Win-11\Home machine’s are new, within the last year; with different OEM pre-install’s. One of the OEM\models has been replaced at least three separate times; within forty-five day's of the initial purchase date. The pre-installation for both of the current machines, --presented install issues with both the OS and one or more OEM\software titles, which the respective OEM could not explain other than, reinstalling from a factory image, or ship the machine back for warranty repair.

NOTE: I don’t purchase new equipment only to submitted it for warranty repair within the first two weeks of the purchase.

Moving forward with this post, after numerous Restore’s\Reinstall’s from the OEM factory image, in addition to all available Win-11\Update’s, things got decidedly worse. At one point after the machine seemed to be stable, I paused Windows updates and vowed never to update again. After a bit of time, while not updating the OS, something stopped functioning properly, which is something that would happen randomly with increased frequency. I decided to acquire and installed “Windows 11 Media Creation Tool”; on both machines. The results were a more calmed and consistent (stable) experience, I assume because it was a bare-bones install, without the bloatware. However, this “calmed and consistent experience” is limited; to approximately three -to- four month’s. Proof of that approximate time-frame is posted above; see box-a's install date, then kindly --do the math. After three -to- four month's the OS begins slowly misbehaving, trying to derail itself. Beginning with “File Explorer's” odd behavior, progressing onto sluggish and/or unresposiveness, until we get to issue’s like what you're reading in this post, --that provides extended disruptions which will continue until one day, just a couple of week's ago, --the machine will not load the OS.

Again, this cycle begins to happen approximately every three to four months after the initial install using the “Windows 11 Media Creation Tool”; much sooner when the installation is from the OEM's "Factory Image". Some of my previous posts are what I’ll term as --pre-text to this post. Box-a is very close to needing a fresh\clean-install but, in three -to- four month's I'll be sitting in this same situation; I need to resolve most, if not all of these reoccuring issue's.

Update-01: 20240930_1930\EDT -- Moments ago, after both box-a and box-b were left powered-on since this thread began, another attempt by box-b to access SMB-share's on box-a was successful. To be clear, both machines were left unattended to work their everyday task's and now, possibly through divine intervention, instead of being locked-out, the process has transitioned from a locked dialog, to this, effectively granting access to the SMB share's on box-a. Now that this SMB issue is currently working, there is nothing to troubleshoot; until it returns. almost forty-eight hours of lost (one-way) SMB connectivity.

--Another seemingly unrelated/intermittent issue that just returned is, the random disconnect, then reconnecting of a Bluetooth speaker on box-a. These issues are starting to smell and feel like everything (so far) in this thread, with the exception of "File Explorer"; is network related. I'll continue to document and update.

Thank you for reading, Remain Healthy ...

Update-02: 20241001_0755\EDT -- Another instance of box-a not signing-in, then landing on the desktop after a batch script reboot. The batch script contains:

Batch:
@echo off
Setlocal EnableDelayedExpansion

shutdown /r /t 0

In this instance, after "Task Scheduler" has triggered the above, the machine abandoned the user at the Sign-on screen; and not the desktop. As previously stated in this thread, I have removed the password from the only local account (Admin). Today was one of those times where the process left the machine at the Sign-In screen, leaving the user no choice but to manually left-click the Sign-In button to advance, without having to enter a password, to access the desktop.

When the above happens, it leave's one 'start-up folder' application and another "task Scheduler" job in the balance; not initiated. Both should be triggered and run (respectively) at 'Startup'; one via the "Startup folder", the other via "Task Scheduler". The expected behavior is for the above shutdown script to restart, without warning, then land on the accounts' desktop. See the initial post describing other inconsistent/intermittent results after the above code is run.

20241001_185600: Another inconsistent/intermittent item. This is something I've experienced before, but not with any recent frequency; box-a appeared to completely shutdown. Box-a always has shore-power; barring a blackout. After booting-up, then checking "Event Viewer", box-a transitioned --sleep/hibernation; i.e. if I'm understanding the attached log excerpt correctly. Please review the annotated images and a few selected event's.

When I compare the images, one or more item's appear to be missing, sleep/hibernation is not set/enabled in the current 'Balanced' power-plan setting. Lastly, perhaps this should have been listed first, since the installation box-a has always had all available settings, "Power plan" and otherwise --set to Performance. As one of the image's will show, not only has the "Power plan" been changed to "Balanced", but Win-11 has a "Start menu\Choose a power plan\" selection. When this is chosen, only the "Balance" plan is listed; the Performance plan I previously enabled, is no where to been seen.

--I misspelled Hibernate within two of the attached filenames, as well as copy-n-pasting those mistake's into the annotated image's; apologia's

Walk with me, to review the attached image's and the available setting's:
  • Event_Sleep_Hibernate_2024-10-01 235946.png -- Event log's show, from bottom to the top -- [box-a] transitioning from "modern standby" to sleep then hibernate, all took place while constant shore power is maintained. Should the reader need a particular event expanded, please ask, then I will post the image.
  1. Start_menu_Power_A.png -- Selecting "Edit power plan"
  2. 20241001_203355_Edit_Plan.png -- Review the annotation
  3. 20241001_203931_Hibernate_Performance_not_listed.png -- Review the annotation
  4. Start_menu_Power_B.png -- Review the annotation
  5. 2024-10-01 204534.png
  6. Start_menu_Power_C.png -- Review the annotation
  7. 20241001_210000_Best-Performance_Available.png -- A power 'Performance' selection is available only on this screen. However, where are it's individual setting's located?

The issue(s) I'm attempting point at:
  • "Power plan\Balanced\Change advanced power settings", Hibernate is not listed; how can [box-a] transition to hibernate without a setting?
  • The Performance power plan is not showing or otherwise listed in the normal places.
  • What changed the "Power plan\Performance" setting back to balanced?
  • Where did the visible "Power plan\Performance" setting's, get moved to?

Using the attached images, given the available setting's and the setting(s) not listed, how\why did [box-a] go to sleep/hibernate; what setting was box-a complying with?

Continued Respect ...

UPATE-03: 20241019 -- As I've previously posted, reinstalling using either the OEM\Factory Restore (image) or, the Microsoft 'Create Windows 11 Installation Media', never works well. The issue's posted above and more --just keep returning and/or snowballing. Recently I performed a reinstall using Windows 11 update:
Edition Windows 11 Home
Version 23H2
Installed on ‎10/‎9/‎2024
OS build 22631.4317

Initially things began to run much smoother, by time the weekend was over, the Sign-In problem's mentioned above had returned, additionally, the issue with box-a not allowing box-b to access its share's has also returned along with -- 'taskkill' being unable to kill the specified PID, which is obviously running but, not responding; this is truly a mess.

This behavior has been continuing since Sept-2023 on three different machines of the same make\model. Previous machines were swapped, this third machines' behavior was the least evil.. I do need some serious assistance.

Continued Respect

@Query01

I don't DO any kind of networking, as I only have one comp. :-)

1. We don't know what hardware you're working with.
2. Updates sometimes make "changes" to Win 11, sometimes a certain update will conflict with your software or setup.
3. We strongly recommend 3rd party backup software for a reason. It helps in situations like this.

It seems (due to my lack of networking skills), that you've created a Frankenstein setup.

It might just be easier to do a clean install of Win 11 on all three machines (at the same time), THEN rebuild your network.
Again, (due to my lack of networking skills), I'm not sure how the whole system is supposed to operate.
***maybe a picture*** showing all three comps and what they are supposed to be doing.

Something like this, with lines and arrows showing how everything is interconnected...

This might help whatever networking guru sees this topic.

Image1.png

If all three computers have the identical hardware, then just list the hardware for one of them.

I'm guessing you slowly "grew" this setup, and have made so many changes (along with the changes updates bring), that it has gotten... unwieldy?

It might be easier, now that you "know" exactly what you want it to do... to just start fresh.
Like you've just unboxed the computers and the cameras... today.

One last thing to consider... if these are chain store computers, like HP or DELL or Lenovo... etc., they may be doing their own updates. And they probably don't have the knowledge of what you're using them for.
This could also be generating conflicts/differences, in each of the three computers.

I think you were correct when you decided to control all the updates manually. With a setup like yours... MS's phased rollout of certain things is probably reeking havoc with your setup.

That's my 2 cents. 🤷‍♂️

@Query01

There's a way to stop Windows updates at a specific Feature Update version.
That might also be a solution for you.

Maybe stop all three comps at say 22H2.
Feature Updates can reek havoc with a network. Much more so than with a stand-alone computer.

I don't know how to do it, and can't find it in the tutorials, but I'm sure someone knows how. :cool:

Query01, if you’re wanting to stay on a specific build, probably not wise but if it’s affecting your workflow.
You can:

  • Disable automatic updates

  • Change maximun days for updates

  • Specify a target feature update (e.x 23H2)

I use WAU Manager to take control of updates..

Power plan\Performance
"Performance plan" is an outdated setup.
Instead, you can use "Max Performance Overlay".
But you can turn it on like this
Powershell:
# Check PowerShell is running as Administrator
$Principal = ([Security.Principal.WindowsPrincipal] [Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity]::GetCurrent())

If (-Not ($Principal.IsInRole([Security.Principal.WindowsBuiltInRole]::Administrator))) {
    Write-Warning "You do not have Administrator rights to run this script. Please run PowerShell as an Administrator."
    Break
}

function Power-Plans
{
    Clear-Host
    Write-Host "================ System power plans ================"
    Write-Host "1: Press '1' Balanced."
    Write-Host "2: Press '2' High performance."
    Write-Host "3: Press '3' Power saver."
    Write-Host "Q: Press 'Q' to quit."
}

Power-Plans

$selection = Read-Host "Please make a selection"
 switch ($selection)
 {
     '1' {
         C:\Windows\System32\powercfg.exe /SETACTIVE SCHEME_BALANCED
     }
     '2' {
         C:\Windows\System32\powercfg.exe /SETACTIVE SCHEME_MIN
     }
     '3' {
         C:\Windows\System32\powercfg.exe /SETACTIVE SCHEME_MAX
     }
     'q' {
         return
     }
}
C:\Windows\System32\powercfg.exe /l
pause

For some reason, many people think that a “Performance power plan” will greatly improve performance.
On modern computers, it's a little more complicated than that.

@Query01

@Ghot, at this point my data is relatively safe; not on the OS partition. I've annotated your reply below ...

Not an exotic\Frankenstein setup; basic lan with share's. I posted earlier the OS\Version for each of the three machine's involved; Box-a is the problem-child.
Something like this, with lines and arrows showing how everything is interconnected...

This might help whatever networking guru sees this topic.

View attachment 113224

If all three computers have the identical hardware, then just list the hardware for one of them.
I'm not dissmissing a hardware issue but, throughout this entire experience everything is pointing to the OS install on Box-a. I can't swap Box-a with Box-b because, --Box-b spec's are more agreeable to another task which is etremely mobile, and would also take the system offline for too long.
I'm guessing you slowly "grew" this setup, and have made so many changes (along with the changes updates bring), that it has gotten... unwieldy?
Did not slowly grow, always had two machine's until one of them developed a hardware issue that began a cat-n-mouse game of RMA's, which prompted the OEM to replace the device with a 'new' unit. During this RMA time-frame I had to crack-open a piggy bank an purchase another 'new' machine until the RMA roller-coaster came to a full-stop. This purchased machine, Box-a, is the very machine that has these issue's, which was replaced three time's. The replacement machine, Box-b, as a result of the RMA, different OEM than Box-a works with none of the problem's experienced with Box-a. Any issue's happening with Box-b are caused by Box-a not responding or allowing Box-b to access it's share's.

I always needed a spare machine.

It might be easier, now that you "know" exactly what you want it to do... to just start fresh.
Like you've just unboxed the computers and the cameras... today.
This setup was always the same; I just added another machine with another IP.

When I first started using the first three Box-a machine's, remember there where three; the OEM had issue's with the machines expected behavior after numerous OEM\ Factory Image Reinstall's; this is what led to exchanging Box-a at the retailer. Once the third Box-a began exhibiting the same behavior, one at a time, and over the course of approxiimately four to five month's, I did another OEM\Factory Image Reinstall then kept postponing the OS updates. The OS would repeatedly, and ever so slowly, begin to malfunction; starting with 'File Explorer' hanging\freezing taking down the entire OS.

Then I gave up, convinced it was the OEM\preinstall and bloatware, I performed a fresh install using the 'Media Creation Tool'; and suspended updates; things were decidedly more stable. However as I've stated over and over, the longer the system runs over time and across both cold boots and restart's, these issue's either --keep comming back or --new issue's are added until the machine will not boot into the OS --without a 'System Restore' or a full reinstall.

When I suspend the OS update's, it is only after the initial Win-11 update's are applied. If I don't, then asking for assistance always leads to "Is your system Up-to-date?". I also make sure I only update driver's from the OEM's website. Whatever is causing these issue's, running:

Code:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

... does not see any concern's.; sometimes a system restart offer's temporary relief, other times not.
That's my 2 cents. 🤷‍♂️

@antspants, starting with the OEM preinstalled 23H2, after the initial OS update's, I've postponed the OS updates as well as auto-update's from the OEM. Driver update's are manually accepted from the OEM. See this post to Ghot for detail's about my reinstall's and update's. That said, regardless of what method of reinstall I posted, the OS slowly return's to the above described behavior. Please do remember, this has been happening on the same make\model across three different machine's. All hardware or software diagnostic fail to find any irregular issue's to report.

I have found and have set "Max Performance". My reason for wanting to use 'any' performance plan over 'Balanced' is due to all of the USB connected HDD's keep spinning down, I need them always spinning. The 'USB Suspend' setting does not help. This too may be another OS issue that I cannot yet figure out. Unlike the other intermittent/unstable and reoccurring concern's, this one consistent; happens all day, everyday.

Your problems are probably being caused by the updates. Either MS's or the comp manufacturer's.
There's been a LOT of topics about various types of networking having issues, usually related to one update or another.

This isn't like the old days, where MS tested the updates over and over, before releasing them.
Much of their quality assurance testing is done by everyday people, who report issues on the Feedback Hub.

While this is good for MS, it's not so good, for mission critical machines, like a network.

It's hard enough to keep things running smoothly on one machine. Three in a network is much harder.
If it was me, I'd pick a version of Win 11 that was rock hard stable, and block all updates since then.

But that's a choice you have to make.

Ofc, this is just a big whopping generalization. As I mentioned above... I don't do networking.
It's mainly just about how many topics I've seen about some update, causing issues with a network.

NOTE: I used to do networking, back in the early 80's. But things have changed a bit since then. :D

This I was not aware of. Also, the OEM always begins to play the blame game pointing as the OS when they don't know what is going, beyond an OEM\Image recovery or send the machine in for diagnostic, which almost always turns into them finding something that was caused by the end-user: $$$.xx.

The 'Feedback Hub' has been unresponsive to post's early on. I also have a feeling that signing-up for the MS account and associating it with Box-a, even though I never set Box-a to Sign-In with that MS account; may be contributing to my 'Lock-out' issue's. Only way to find out it a serious Factory Reset; takes much longer than the recently performed Win-Update reinstall method.
While this is good for MS, it's not so good, for mission critical machines, like a network.

It's hard enough to keep things running smoothly on one machine. Three in a network is much harder.
If it was me, I'd pick a version of Win 11 that was rock hard stable, and block all updates since then.
I don't have a problem with doing this, but every version since 23H2 has similar OS instability; not one version has been stable since Sept-2023. Unfortunately, due to hardware and/or driver's, I cannot install Win-10. Not sure if Win-11\Pro would help; Something I don't really need.
But that's a choice you have to make.
Ghot, thank you for taking the time. I'm stuck with this machine, I'll have to make use of it the best I can. I have not forgotten or dismissed @zbook. I haven't gotten around to it yet; wanting make sure I don't present myself as a complete idiot for missing something simple.

My focus will be on Box-a and why it intermittently not 'Sign-In' a passwordless account to its desktop or, lock-the-account until I remove the Ethernet cable. Then 2) Why Box-a will intermittently and randomly deny only Box-b, access to its share's; these two item's seem related. I do not yet see how any hardware issue could interfere with either issue; to me, it appears to be purely an OS malfunction.

Respect to everyone, I'm listening ...

Thank you, I will begin reading and probably test of the other machine before moving it to Box-a; the problem-child. The other plan would be to abandon the other --mobile task, for box-b, then replace box-a with box-b; that is double duty. I continue to Listen.

I never set Box-a to Sign-In with that MS account;

I never suggested that.
All I'm saying is that sometimes, some updates... break things.
It's a fact of life on Windows 11.
This is why most of us, use 3rd party backup software.

If something gets weird, just restore from a backup before it started happening.
Then, play around with it... till you can get the updates and the network working. :-)

For any sort of Lan monitoring etc - I'd always recommend a Linux Host --Networking usually works straight out of the box with mapping to Windows and other boxes no issue

Example here : 3 Machines -- 2 X Linux, 1X Windows 11 Canary (latest build) on home LAN with same subnet and Workgroup - the 2 Linux boxes are file servers, Video cam monitors (home / street security / remote "door answering" - can speak remotely to visitors who call while I'm out), backups for Windows client machines (family, etc), Virtual Machine hosting, web hosting and multi-media which i use with KODI installed on 3X amazon firesticks used in remote TV's. All it needs is to install the SAMBA package, and openssh and you are in business via a simple file browser !!!!

From the file Browser :

now browse the Windows machine

And let's just browse a Linux box

Simple - works 100% of the time --- To me Windows Networking has as much consistency and reliability as Gandalf the Wizards magic in Lord of the rings. Countless times just when I seem to get Windows networking into some sort of managability a new build or sometimes even an update via WU hoses the whole thing up again.

And BTW scheduling backups etc is simple as well via crontab too -- and it works reliabily -- and can be left unattended -- if there are urgent events say attempts at intrusion or unauthorised network traffic then I get a text message to a mobile phone. It sounds like your idea of not allowing a machine to be unattended is a bit like "Slave master tethering" or very last century. Decent security on servers (or machines acting as servers) should allow total 24/7 unattended operation.

The only time I touch the Linux boxes are if (rarely) updating the OS, or adding new hardware and most of that can be done from the WINDOWS machine simply via using SSH from Windows --install in the optional features openssh-server and start it.

This one (running as a test) is a mini PC - last booted around 18 hrs ago as I had a spare 256gb SSD I wanted to add to it (/mnt/DV2 in the diagram). I'm running the test just to see how robust these mini pc's are == so far they seem great, almost noiseless and certainly no heat / cooling problems.
