My domain host's server is blocking my IP address every few days

At the moment I am OK but that may be because my domain hosting and mail service provider has white listed my current IP address. The problem may arise again because my IP address is dynamic, not static. What criteria BT use to change it I don't know. I suppose if my modem resets for any reason or loses connection temporarily that will do it. From what you say, using VPN introduces a new IP address so that may cause an issue as I lose the current white list protection.
At the moment I think my PC must be to blame. Laptop is rarely used and lock outs have occurred when it was off, phone is new and problems pre-date its purchase. My wife's PC has never been used to access my mail so that is out to. I've reset my email so currently in a "wait and see" condition! The main thing is that I can't change my email address as that would cause too many repercussions.

Edit - Sinto - you are welcome to log on to my PC if you think it would help, or we could wait and see it the problem raises its head again. Usually happens once or twice a month so worth waiting - I've had about 10 days clear so far (maybe shouldn't have said that!).
The 12 hour time differential between us doesn't make it easy even for two insomniacs!

Yes. It’s too old and would take a lifetime to reestablish a new one.

You could get your ISP to give you a static address, but it's small outfit and they may not be able to. Also there would likely my be a cost

The ISP is British Telecom - not small, arguably too big, and inefficient in many people's opinion. YNH is just the domain host and the email addresses. And my main email address has been on the go since shortly after YNH started up in 1999. And it's not just the email address that is too old.

I had the two confused

Just when you thought it was safe to go back ....... the lock out jaws seize my domain again. About 9 - 10 day without problems and then I get locked out. YNH unusually haven't responded yet, so I can only assume it is the same old problem. Something or more unlikely someone was trying to log in to my email server using my 20 plus year old email name and evidently using my IP address.
So a bit of a recap on questions and actions,
I their log files show my IP and email address then the attempts to log in to my mail server must be coming from my house. Correct?
If this the case, it must be my PC, my wife's PC, my phone, her phone or my Smartwatch. Nothing else was powered up this afternoon when the lock out occurred.
So my options are -
Identify the the app - apart from Outlook what could it be. Microsoft Office apps other than Outlook don't try to access email. Correct?
I don't run any other apps that have email communication function.
System files - I have no idea if any do, but why would they.

Failing to identify a culprit amongst my PC apps, my options seem to be
Get a static IP address. Possible but there may be a charge. Any other drawbacks?
Clean out the PCs and load everything afresh - not very practical and it doesn't exclude phone or watch as a culprit!
Get a new email address and possibly domain. I can't drop the domain as the village uses it for their web site which I manage.
A new email address after using it for 20 plus years would create all sort of problems for me and to lose contact with people.

What else. Grin and bear it?

Hi, Ian. I can’t really help anymore as I would just be typing in circles. I have offered to connect with you via Assist, short of that, getting a static IP is putting a bandaid on an open heart surgery incision (Dr speak you understand)

There is very “possibly” more than one Outlook or mail program on your PC. This is something I wanted to inspect.
As mentioned earlier on in this thread, if you have setup your email account (unknowingly) in the wrong Outlook or mail app in the past, and if the settings have since changed, then it could be checking mail in the background with the wrong protocol or password.
This is entirely possible due to the history with your ongoing email posts and some confusion.

Also, when I connected and we setup the POP and you later removed it, I don’t know what else was possibly done in the process.

IMO The problem really is due to Microsofts most creative naming process for Outlook, there were two versions of Outlook with the same email account.

This normally wouldn’t be a problem, unless one has a wrong password or protocal settings in it.

But maybe unbeknown to Ian, is that the “Windows native app New Outlook” possibly had the wrong email account settings or password and it checks for mail in the background.

Ian prefers the “Microsoft 365 Classic Outlook”
So if 2 Outlook apps are running at once, one he is using and one as a background process, and the background process has the wrong information, there may lay the issue.

I really hope removing Windows New Outlook will fix this ongoing and frustrating issue for “Sigurd”

It could also be plausible that the server didn’t appreciate two simultaneous connections looking for mail at the same time and took it as flooding, hence the IP block.

This thread may have been quiet but the issue unfortunately hasn't. I still get locked out every 10 days or so. So this is simply an update. Maybe someone gets an inspiration from somewhere!

My mail service provider, Your Name Here has my IP address white listed, which is fine as long as my ISP doesn't change the IP. Problem is that my ISP, British Telecom, for some reason periodically changes it so the white list stops helping.
As has been noted above, the only information YNH can provide is that the lockout is due to someone or something attempting to login using my email address (which I have been using for 25 years or more) with the wrong password. So the server precautions kick in and my entire domain gets blocked - email addresses and web sites.

I have not made any changes to my hardware for years. I have not parted with any hardware for years and the only two items I have sold/given away is a laptop about 10 years ago and a PC to my son in law. In both cases they were wiped clean first.

So the only hardware items that could possibly be responsible are my wife’s and my PCs, my laptop, my tablet, my wife’s and my phones (the latter was replaced about 2 months ago with the original factory reset and sent back to Samsung as part of the deal). My Id, after 25 years or more, is bound to be known across the world! Can a hacker spoof my IP address? What apps would have a need to access my mail?

You have all tried to help, especially Antspants, but unfortunately not found a solution.

My options seem to be to get more information as to where the login attempt is coming from it seems my options are to 1 - live with it, 2 - change my email address, 3 - switch to another mail server (ie hosting service). 2 - I don't want to do, 3 - might not solve the problem and has other issues related to the web sites I run. So it looks as if I am landed with 1!

I followed your saga about this and thought at the time. "if I was dealing with that, I'd be transitioning everything I had away from using that ISP email address as fast as I could." I'd go with gmail or Microsoft. I know it's a pain, but it can be done. In fact, if there was any other option for using a different ISP, I would be looking at that, too. If that ISP support was up to snuff at all with their technology, they could tell you the geographic location of every computer who logs into your account. Then, you'd know for sure it has absolutely nothing to do with your computers or your network but some outside refarious player. If that proved to be true, it's all the more reason to get new email accounts.

Ian, hi mate.
If the first step of removing the secondary Outlook (New) application hadn’t worked, the next step I was going to take was to remove the profile in your Outlook setup.

Also, to remove everything in your AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\ folder

Short story, remove everything from Outlook, start again. might take a few minutes, starting again is as easy as re adding your address, which I know you know like the back of your hand now.

I periodically do a good clean out of my PC. Basically down to re-format drive and reinstall Windows. I haven't done one for a while and maybe it is time I did. Whether it would help with the issue I don't know - logically it won't. From past actions like this I know that when I reload Outlook, my old account comes back. Useful when I didn't have this problem.
I presume, Sinto, that if I were to do the reinstall (for more reasons than this mail issue) I should zap my Outlook accounts. I have a backup of all emails and contacts which I can access later as and when I need to.
But as the SMTP data is on the mail server, won't it all come back down again when I recreate the Outlook account?

Glascutter - Your suggestion has a lot of merit but I am reluctant to do this. As regards the ISP, they may not be providing as much support as you say they should, but over the 25 years I have been with them they have been extremely helpful, even in the earlier days with problems which didn't really come under their remit. So while loyalty may not be a good reason to stick with them in this situation, I do feel that way.
As for getting a new address, yes, I have seriously considered that and it is still an option, but I have been so involved in local community affairs as well as my personal, professional and business contacts, it would be more agony than pain!

Reloading outlook is only a part of it Ian
Deleting any remnants of profiles and files are also a part of it.

A format wouldn’t hurt. Would be good for your PC and I’d wager fix any problems. But if you want I can connect tomorrow and clean up what I possibly should of done in the first place.
But I was convinced it probably had something to do with the Outlook duplication

If a format didn’t fix it, I can only assume it’s to do with your router. Not sure what though.

I’d doubt there’s anything wrong with YNH or your ISP

@antspants you definitely know more about what is going on here than I do. Is the reason his isp whitelists his email account because his ISP is seeing unsuccessful sign-in attempts to his account? Like I can look at my MS account and see where someone from other countries has attempted to sign in to my MS account 9 times in the last 10 days, all from other countries.
