Network cannot connect to gateway randomly

My internet drops out every day or so. What is happening is in network and sharing under network adapters it shows that it is attempting to identify the network indefinitely. I can re-plug the ethernet cable and then it works again until about a day later the problem comes back. I've tried a different ethernet cable and same problem. I can also diagnose the problem using Windows and it says it cannot reach the gateway and it asks me to click the fix tool which resets the the network card and it works until a day later the problem comes back. There doesn't seem to be a pattern as to when it loses internet.

I also have the NIC forced to a specific IP address for port forwarding but the settings are correct and have been the same settings for many months and this losing internet issue has only been happening recently. And Windows is not reporting an IP conflict and I've also double checked IP's for any conflicts. I've also went into device manager, located the network adapter which is on-board, and disabled "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" under power management. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled the network adapter driver.

I am thinking a faulty NIC and luckily the mobo has two so I will try the second one soon. Currently I am in the process of testing another ethernet cable.

Any other suggestions I should try?

When you say "forced to specific IP" you mean a static IP address correct? If yes, did you set it to an IP address outside of your DHCP scope? If not then another device may be getting assigned the same address which will cause a conflict and can interfere with traffic

Yes static IP. Good idea. My routers DHCP range covers all IP's. However, I have mac reservation set for the computer in question in the router so it should follow the rules that the mac reservation is priority and it reserves the IP address I assign it. And I know it's working because I have mac addresses reserved for 2 other computers on the network and they don't have any signs of issues.

Might help to capture the following the next time you have the issue
  • arp cache
  • routes
  • Install Wireshark (now), take a Wireshark capture when the issue is present and just do a couple of tests, even ping should be fine
