I have the desktop context menu New > Text Document entry at
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Local Settings\MrtCache\C:%5CProgram Files%5CWindowsApps%5CMicrosoft.WindowsNotepad_11.2309.28.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe%5Cmicrosoft.system.package.metadata%5CS-1-5-21-3850220071-3648809380-2408793366-1002-MergedResources-10.pri\1da08fa64b494a\53bf29c4

I have no idea whether that will help you.

The string value is
@{Microsoft.WindowsNotepad_11.2309.28.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe? ms-resource://Microsoft.WindowsNotepad/Resources/ShellNewDisplayName_Txt}

And the data entry is "Text Document."

If you install the Notepad app, it should appear in the New menu...

However...
sometimes I find that process redundant though, because it just plops a blank text document on the Desktop...

I'd rather open an instance and start typing right away...

Can you make the reg extension?
No..., I can for the classic Notepad, but not for the Store version.
The entry should be created automatically upon installing the Store App.

Can you give me the one for the classic?
First you have to restore the functionality of the Classic Notepad:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\notepad.exe]
"NoOpenWith"=-

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\notepad.exe]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\txtfilelegacy\DefaultIcon]
@="imageres.dll,-102"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\txtfilelegacy\shell\open\command]
@="C:\\Windows\\System32\\notepad.exe \"%1\""

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\notepad.exe]
"UseFilter"=dword:00000000

Then..., here is the Classic entry:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shell\New Text Document]
"Icon"="\"C:\\Windows\\System32\\notepad.exe\""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shell\New Text Document\command]
@="\"C:\\Windows\\System32\\notepad.exe\""

Take both codes and paste them into individual Notepad instances and save each as a .reg file, then run them.

The classic entry will look like this, and will open a Notepad instance in most common Directories, not create a blank document:

Note:
You don't necessarily have to uninstall the Store version, but, Windows may get confused as to which application you want to use as the default 'Open with' protocol. Make sure the Classic version works properly first.
