But, as I said, if it's crackling and sporadic sound, it's either a connection issue or a sound card failing.

apologies, got busy and didnt come on here for a while as I got too frustrated as well with the problem. I dont have fx software. However i just got the new windows 10-23 update i think and now the sound is working again so I don't know what this means. I suspect it could stop again though. Also yes i am aware of where to direct the sound to
edit: the sound just stopped again lol

Hi HK!

Don't jump to conclusion just yet. It might be a failing sound card or it just might be a bad connector.

If you feel comfortable with opening the back of your notebook, you could take a look at the connector
on the side of the notebook where the input/output is and verify that there are no wires that are either
frayed or broken but, still hanging by a copper thread.

I haven't re-read the whole thread but, do you or did you try to connect via Bluetooth?
If so, did it work?

Could you also go to Control Panel and from Device Manager expand Sound/Video... and Bluetooth
then, post a screen shot pls.
IF you might be thinking of bringing your notebook to repair shop, pls don't use Geek Squad from Best Buy.
I really don't like to down play any repair shop but, I've heard and read too many bad things about them.

I'm thinking it might be the GFX card fighting the sound card for control of audio (aka driver conflict). NVIDIA is notorious for this. And yes, this can cause a crackling sound when the two are vying for control over audio.

But, you still have to choose where the sound goes too

Yes. In my case I have to do it after every driver update with NVIDIA.

Isn't this the third driver this month

But, once you've chosen the output, does it stay the same even though you restart or shut down and reboot?

I don't. When I reboot , it is where I left it.

Sorry if this is already suggested, I didn't have the time to read the whole thread. This is a typical case that the incorrect Realtek audio driver is installed or the audio device isn't even Realtek but Windows Update for some reason decided that these drivers were appropriate. First go at Settings, Applications and uninstall anything related to Realtek audio. Restart the computer and see if your issue is resolved. If not, go to Device Manager and delete (uninstall) the Realtek audio device. If you see a prompt to also delete the driver check the box to do it. Restart again and see if the issue is resolved. If not, right-click on the audio device, find the device IDs and Google them to find appropriate drivers. You can post them here to help you.

I don't. When I reboot , it is where I left it.

Sometimes the settings stay. They frequently don't and it will almost always throw off third party programs like Discord, which will continually nag me to switch my audio to the GFX card.

hello,

bluetooth does work. I dont have the tools to unscrew the back unfortunately and i dont feel too confident doing this as Ive never done it before.

i dont have nvidia
currently dont even have the driver installed cos i uninstalled after trying to reinstall many times and even when installed no sound...

I insert my Linux Mint iso on a usb, boot from it, go into it in live mode, click on Firefox, and check things out on YouTube.

This is one work around I've used many times. :)

Ignore the Bluetooth device. Sometimes trying to install these obscure devices might break your Bluetooth functionality. In my own laptop I could not connect my headphones. Right-click on the Intel HD audio device and select Update drivers. See if Windows can automatically find the drivers for you. Also check the optional updates in Advanced section of Windows Update. The driver may already be there waiting to download.

They are better off going to Intel for the Intel audio driver first, before letting Windows provide the generic driver. And if they should choose to use what Windows provides they would be wise to make a restore point beforehand. The "one size fits all approach" is always a gamble.

As for Bluetooth, I completely agree. The Bluetooth can be pursued later. With Intel, Intel drivers must come first.

"Optional Updates" is also a good idea, after the basic audio driver for Intel is procured from Intel.

You will have hard time finding the appropriate audio driver at Intel's site. I would first visit the motherboard (computer) manufacturer's site and download the audio driver from there.

The thing is I already done this many times , downloading the driver from lenovo , for it to either not work or only for a few mins .

What if you uninstall the driver and restart? Does sound work then? As a last resort you could use a driver utility such as Snappy Driver Installer. There are two versions, the full and the lite. The full version is over 20GB as it contains the whole driver database. You don't need that unless you are a computer technician. The lite version has no drivers initially but you can search the database and download the appropriate drivers for your hardware, it will take a while. When the download it complete you should see a list of devices. The green text is for those missing drivers or with non-working drivers. The blue text is for devices that a newer or "better" driver is found. I would avoid touching the devices that are working properly, so I would uncheck all the boxes next to the blue lines, except of course for the Intel HD audio device.

If downloading the native driver from the manufacturer's website and installing it won't help and installing Intel's updated version of the driver (assuming they have one) won't help, it is likely the problem is not the Intel audio driver. I'm still not entirely ruling out a driver conflict here either.

Hello Kitty. Do you encounter this with both speakers and headphones? Do you also have this problem with direct wired headphones as well as wireless? I apologize in advance if you have already answered these questions but I'm getting ready for a meeting and do not have time to read the entire thread over again.

even after uninstalling and restarting the problem persists. I could try the snappy driver installer but not feeling optimistic lol

I havent tried installing directly from intel yet cos i had some trouble finding exactly the right page to go to. i have this problem w the laptops speakers and wired headphones but connecting to bluetooth headphones or speakers works fine
