There is no usb option in boot priority order. Only windows boot manager. It was there, but it disappeared and I don't know how to get it back.

Some bioses do not show usb drives as a boot option unless a drive is plugged in.

They are both the same USB stick...
One is for UEFI boot and the other for legacy boot.

If you have set UEFI only boot in BIOS (Legacy mode aka CSM is disabled), then only connected UEFI (GPT) USB flash drives appear in the boot menu. If your USB is Legacy (MBR) it won't be on the list unless you enable Legacy mode (CSM).

Exactly. If you connect a Legacy USB flash drive it cannot boot, so it doesn't appear on the boot menu. Only UEFI bootable devices appear there.

Exactly. My Acer Aspire 3 A315-23 (System One in My Computers below) only shows a usb in boot priority when a bootable usb has been plugged in before I turn it on.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Plus if the boot is set to UEFI only, the USB must be UEFI bootable, otherwise it doesn't show.

Thanks to all your help. I created a boot disk and it recognized it.

OK. I want to install ubuntu on my new Acer laptop with Windows 11S. I've created the USB boot disk and tried both MBR and GPT. with no luck. When I try to boot, it just comes up with the ACER splash screen and sits there. When I look at the boot menu, I have something like lipus lite for the choice.

If you use Rufus to create the Ubuntu USB flash drive, make sure you select UEFI (GPT). Installing Ubuntu after Windows will also install Grub bootloader and you select to boot Ubuntu or Windows from there.
