Solved Non admin accounts unable to access network

OS: Win 11 Home 24H2, build 26100.2605

Hi guys, I have some shared folders on my linux desktop that I am able to access from my win 11 admin account using \\HOSTNAME. The
problem occurs when now trying to access \\HOSTNAME from non admin accounts, a network error popup appears with
the message "Windows cannot access \\HOSTNAME" with the option to diagnose the problem, which of course, is of no help at all.


Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Try to add Everyone group to share permission and give full permission also add user of account you are trying to connect to share resource.

Do these problem accounts have passwords? 24H2 introduced some tighter restrictions on accessing network shares, insecure guest access is not allowed by default. In Pro you can change this in Group policies, but in Home you have to do so in the Registry.

Unlike Pro though, there is no gpedit.exe to be able to change this. Windows 11 cannot access other computers, but can be accessed by the other computers - post #34

I have discovered what is wrong. I am somewhat of a linux noob, I had thought that I could attempt to connect to my linux machine from my laptop and then be prompted for a username and password.
What is actually happening is that my linux machine is expecting the account of the windows machine to have the same name as a local account. I have created a non-admin windows user with the same username as a local account on the linux machine and when I try connect am prompted for a username and password.

Is there any way to change this behaviour or will I have to create the relevant accounts on my linux machine.

You could allow guest access.

Followed the instructions exactly with no change in behavior but seeing as it appears to a samba/ linux issue should I flag this as resolved.
