Solved NVMe drive Question

I think my ssd drive in my mini pc died. The mini pc no longer sees it. I ordered a new PCIe drive only to find out the drive in the mini is a Sata C drive. Will the drive work or should I cancle the order?

No, It just has a slot for a SSD/HDD. Looking inside, the connector it looks like the drive will connect because there is only the one gap on the right. The Sata C drive itself has two, one on the right and one on the left. I'm just not sure it will work or if I should cancle the new drive.

Pull up the manufacturer specs sheet for the device by model number. It will tell you exactly what kind of drive(s) it can use.

If you provide the make/model of the mini PC, you may get better advice.

Do you mean that the SSD is a 2.5" SATA one? And that there is no M.2 socket? If so, the M.2/NVME drive will be of no use to you.

I would do that until you are certain it will/will not work.
You can then order the right one and save yourself money
and the trouble of tying to troubleshoot.

If it's the Beelink showing in your post in 'Order Placed' thread then it shows NVMe SSD.

It's an older mini PC That I bought awhile ago. It's a Beelink U59 Mini PC. When I look up my past purchases on Amazon the link takes me to a slightly different computer. My pc came with a 512GB NVMe drive and Windows 11 Pro. The one that the link shows comes with a 500GB NVMe drive and Linux. I did some searching and from what I found I think it should work. I know that the drive will fit the slot. The only difference is that the old drive has two slots and the new drive only has one slot. The computer only has the one tab so it will plug in. I was thinking about sending it back but changed my mind. If it won't work I'll buy an external encloser and use it as a storage drive.

It does show M.2 SATA.
As a by the by I only use NVMe drives in enclosures now. Have three for different laptops to keep my images. Not only faster speeds but a smaller physical size for storage.

You say the slot it goes into has two breaks in the connection.
This is what you have to take care of when buying a nvme.

I'm suffering from a small jargon problem.

I'm accustomed to reading about "notches" in M.2 drives, not "slots". M.2 - Wikipedia

If the old drive has 2 notches, it's SATA. (I have no idea what "SATA C" is.) It will fit in a socket with a key for a B notch, an M notch, or both.

If the socket has a single M key, then it will fit a SATA drive or a PCI-E one. ("Fit" doesn't mean that a SATA drive is supported. But the old drive is SATA, so that's OK.) There once were non-NVME PCI-E M.2 drives, but that was for a brief period. A quick web search suggests that's unlikely for this mini PC.

The OP will probably be OK with an NVME M.2 drive.

The slot only has the one break. the drive had two breaks in it. The original drive says SATA C. I went ahead and tried the new drive I ordered from Amazon. It was never recognized. I ordered and recieved a USB encloser from Amazon. Both of the drives won't show in File Explorer. By trying the new drive in the mini pc I either fried it or the USB encloser is defective. I reinstalled the original drive back to the mini pc and tried installing Windows. The drive shows up in the installer but shows 0 GB out of 0 GB available. The new drive didn't even show up.

So, this drive is not a SATA drive. It's a PCIe drive.

Your initial drive is not a PCIe 2.0 is it. I know they are
backwards compatible but , It's not that old right?
Does the motherboard accept PCIe 3.0 and Sata.
Could you provide a screen of the original drive.

Did it show in BIOS?
You might have to format.
After the BIOS, does it show in Disk Management?
If it does, you'll have to initialise the drive.

and do you have another PC/notebook to connect the external drive to see
if it does show as storage / USB drive.

Slot is used to describe the connector and breaks makes it easier for the
average person to understand.

I'll have to wait until I can get a change to take the Mini PC apart to take a pic. The old M.2 card has two slots and says SATA C. The Bios is very basic. It only shows what devices you can use to boot from. I went ahead and put the new drive in the Mini PC and tried to install Windows from my flash drive. The drive couldn't be found. I put the old drive back in and tried again. The old drive is seen but shows two partions with a size of 0. I was going to try a 2.5 HDD but I don't have any I can use. I don't know what happened to this Mini PC to cause two drives to mess up. On my USB HDD all of the folders lost the ownership and I couldn't open them. Luckily it was just a matter of taking ownership again.
