Solved NVMe drive Question

To make sure that I understand, this is what I think the thread states:

The new NVME drive fits in the mini PC. That means that the M.2 slot has an M key ("notch", for some), and only an M key, which means that it supports NVME drives. I also understand that the drive is functioning.

(That doesn't guarantee that it would support SATA drives, but as the old drive is SATA...)

The old SATA M.2 drive appears to be dead. (The OP could mess with it further, but I wouldn't do it unless there is data on it to be recovered.)

Is any of that incorrect?

And that is what it started as but, why was the drive a SATA instead of a PCIe?
John mentioned that the "builders" of the mini PC supplied a SATA drive to
prevent costs. So, this implies that the port (slot) does support both protocols.
Am I right ?

But I miss your point.

Did anyone disagree?

My #2 system has an M.2 slot with an M key, and its specs say that it supports both NVME and SATA drives. My #1 system has an M.2 slot with an M key, but I believe that it doesn't support M.2 SATA drives, even though the M+B keyed ones would physically fit.

The #2 system is older.

Can you connect an M.2 SATA to an M.2 NVMe port?

As people already know they are physically compatible, you can plug an M.2 SATA (aka M+B key) into an M.2 NVMe (M key). My question is will it work?

NVMe drives can be either M or M + B keyed.

SATA drives can be either B or M + B keyed.

And M + B keyed drive can work on an M keyed slot.

I'm surprised to read that there are NVME M.2 drives with M+B notches, but I tried a Bing AI search, and it returned an example.

My point was , sorry I didn't ask it the right way.
I was searching to see if the motherboard would supply
both SATA and PCIe interface (protocol) which would mean that the
new drive winuser had bought would be recognized in the BIOS/
Disk Manager. I didn't find any documentation on the motherboard
and this is probably why it took so long.

And, that is what I was looking for and was not able to ascertain that the motherboard in winsuer's
PC would support.

Specifically:

Not all motherboards support both types, it depends on the age of the motherboard in most cases.

ON your board, the m.2 slots support both SATA & NVME but not at all speeds.

this means top slot likely supports PCIe 4 and bottom supports PCIe 3.

1 x M.2_1 socket 3, with M key, type 2242/2260/2280/22110 storage devices support(SATA & PCIe 4.0 x4 mode)
AMD B550 Chipset :
1 x M.2_2 socket 3, with M key, type 2242/2260/2280/22110 storage devices support (SATA & PCIE 3.0 x 4 mode)*

Additionally, remember that this is a mini PC. Small Form Factor PCs have to be a lot more flexible in terms of what can be used, versus a full E-ATX mobo based PC, with lots more slots and such.

Also, FWIW, my System 1's motherboard, the MSI MEG X570 GODLIKE, shows compatibility with this ADATA drive:

ADATA SU720-ASU720SS-1T-C

Which, looking at its specs at

Shows it is a 2280 M.2 SATA 6Gb/s (SATA III) Interface (page 2).

So my mobo also supports both (as I'm currently running Samsung 980 Pro 2 TB in each slot at NVMe connection and speed):

You see, the user manuals for this notebook says that, both slot supports PCIex4
but, when I went to the MSI forums, I was told that the second slot only supports
PCIex3. This is why I was searching for some kind of manual for winuser's PC that
would tell us what was or not available. It took way too long for this to get resolved
but, I did also learn quite a bit so, time well spent.

This is what I bought to replace the T7 for this notebook Before I knew that it only supports
PCIe x3 . What a waste. Well, not in storage capacity but, money Not well spent. The prices in
Canada for any electronics are way more expensive than in the States.

You mentioned that the BIOS is a simple one but, it should have the
drive in there. Does it see it as primary drive?

That is exactly what happened. The Mini PC never recognized it. I did get it working in the encloser. it just needed to initialize in Disk Management.

When the new drive wouldn't show in File Explorer My thoughts were that I had ruined it by trying it in the mini pc. I was wrong and it just needed to be initialized. I gave up on trying to use it in the Mini PC. I was going to try a 2.5" drive but I couldn't find a spare. The new NVMe drive is working so I'm going to use it as a USB drive.
