I somehow messed up my Windows 11 install?

OPen a command prompt as Admin, and type: diskpart

Then at the Diskpart prompt, type: list disk

There will be a GPT column it should have an asterisk there, if the disk is GPT.


Assuming the Windows disk is GPT, then...
You are supposed to unhook the other drives when installing Windows (as per the tutorial).
The EFI partition may have been installed on another drive.

I did not unhook other drives - which was a mistake on my part.

However, I do see an asterisk there next to the drive, so it is GPT.

I do not see that EFI partition on other drives. The only other drive with an EFI partition is my cloned windows OS drive from my previous Windows 11.

Just do the Win 11 install again... and this time, unhook ALL other drives.



During the install you'll see a page with all kinds of check boxes.
Personally, I just uncheck all that junk. If you want it later... you can always get it easily.



I guess the Win 11 installer "saw" the EFI partition on the cloned drive, and figured it didn't need to make a fresh one.

Make sure that all partitions are removed (step 10 in the tutorial) and install windows on the unallocated space. And I'll reinterate @Ghot advise, unplug all other drives during install.

The cloned drive with windows is an NVME and will be a pain to take out.

You think I can just disable the drive in the BIOS or something?

Some bios allow it. Some don't.An nvme is held in by one screw.

I've fully installed Windows 11 Pro and most of my programs, scripts, and have nearly everything setup again (after about 5 hours).

Will report in a few days if any issues happen again. I doubt it, but we'll see.

Took about 8 total hours to get everything installed, all the settings working, (almost) everything up and running.

Seems like everything is working great. Kinda wish we could have gotten to the bottom of what was truly causing those errors but at least the issue is solved by doing it the old fashioned way.

But that screw is normally under the GPU!

It was probably just a driver corruption issue. But, going from Intel to AMD, and from MBR to GPT and W10 to W11... can have issues that it would just take too long to troubleshoot.
That's even if, you would eventually find the problem... which you might not.

Anyway... good job.
Now make a full backup of your Windows install.







How I use backup software...

1. I try to keep the "used space" on my Windows drive, small. Then backups and restores will be fast.
2. Install large programs or large games, on a storage drive.
3. Always create the backup software's bootable rescue USB, so you can access your backups when Windows won't boot.
4. Make fresh backups at strategic times. Like... before a lot of tweaks, a WU, or a major program or driver install.
5. Then, if anything goes wrong... just restore from your latest backup.
