Pausing Win 11 updates doesn't work

When I had Win 10, and I paused updates for a week, my machine would wait a week and then update, the way you would expect it to. But with Win 11 (25H2) on the same machine (Dell), when I pause updates for a week, as soon as I turn off my computer, it automatically updates anyway. And when I go to the update window, it shows that the updates are still paused, even though it was just updated. And when I then un-pause the updates, it checks for updates and tells me that my machine is "up to date". Why is this happening and how can I change it?

How can it update when you turn it off? I guess you mean the setting is forgotten?

I don't know what you mean by "forgotten". When an update is available, you can either click on "restart" and it turns off the computer and restarts it and updates it -- or you can just turn off the computer, and as it is turning off, it accomplishes part of the update and then waits until you turn your computer back on to finish updating.

I'm actually trying to help! You did say, "as soon as I turn off my computer, it automatically updates anyway" I still can't understand what you meant. If it's off, it can't do anything.

I reenabled Windows Update last night. It took several hours to complete on my two workstations.

When I said "as soon as I turn off my computer, it automatically updates anyway.", what I meant is that I click on shut down and then, as it is shutting down (before it is completely shut down), it goes to a dark screen with the words Working on updates, and then shows the percentage it has updated, and when it is done, it finishes shutting down. And I do not use another update manager. It is Microsoft's update window.

The difference with my Win 10 setup was that when I clicked on shut down, it would do just that, without installing updates.

When you right-click the Shutdown button, you should be offered the options for Restart or Shutdown without installing updates, besides Restart and Shutdown with installing updates.
