How would I play my computer music files through my stereo computer? I have a Dell OptiPlex 5060 Micro and a DENON AVRX1400H. Also, on my old Dell Windows 10 computer, all that I had to do was connect an HDMI cable from the back of my computer to the back of my stereo receiver, however, with this new computer, it doesn't work that way.

It doesn't seem to work that way with Windows 11. The speakers have to show up first in System > Sound. And then after that you can set it as default. However, if it doesn't connect correctly to your computer, it will never show up.

Is this your amplifier?
Denon AVR-X1400H IN-Command
If so, it has Bluetooth.
If your device that has music files on it, it too should have Bluetooth capability.
If not, you can buy a Bluetooth dongle that will make it compatible.
No cables needed.
Pair both devices and your music will play to your amplifier via Bluetooth.

You also have a line out port and a headphone audio out port, see 3,4....
Both are 3.5mm jacks.
Look at your audio inputs for the Denon.
Buy an adapter cable if needed to connect both devices, looks like you need RCA male connectors into the Denon amplifier

It's up to you to decide what connection is best.
Wired or wireless.
Personally, I would go the wireless route, no cables needed, just the Bluetooth dongle, if needed. Or this adapter below...

That Dell has Bluetooth built in... That's what I would use.

Spec for Dell OptiPlex 5060 Micro

● Qualcomm QCA9377 Dual-band 1x1 802.11ac Wireless with
MU-MIMO + Bluetooth 4.1; 2.4 Ghz - 5 Ghz
● Qualcomm QCA61x4A Dual-band 2x2 802.11ac Wireless
with MU-MIMO + Bluetooth 4.2; 2.4 Ghz - 5 Ghz
● Intel Wireless-AC 9560, Dual-band 2x2 802.11ac Wi-Fi with

Or one of these Amazon.co.uk if you prefer direct connection.

But if you want to watch videos on your PC too, you may be disappointed by using bluetooth, because (as far as I interpreted its the specs in the manual) your receiver is not supporting any Low Latency prococols. And that may result in a delay between vision and sound (no lipsync).

Your PC should have an audio output. So a cable like shown in #10 would be preferable, should be available in any hardware store. Pay attention for earth loops: in no other way the earth side of the PC and the receiver should be connected to another than only via this cable. Otherwise you might become troubles with 50/60 Hz hum. That would be the case, if your receiver is (physically) connected to a cable TV / Radio system as well.

You would need some converter on the Dell OptiPlex 5060 Micro from USB to optical or from Audio Out 3,5mm to optical.
Which both are quite generally available.

Advantage with the optical connection is you never have any troubles with mains hum by earth loops.

No, it doesn't. It has DisplayPorts. I even purchased a DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter Cable from Amazon, but it did nothing.
Sorry. I relied on reading the specs: https://dl.dell.com/topicspdf/optiplex-5060-desktop_specifications3_en-us.pdf

The image of the back of the machine shows 2 DisplayPorts. I'm surprised. Maybe it's because the Optiplex is aimed at the business market.

DisplayPort is supposed to support audio, and a DP to HDMI adapter is supposed to pass that as well, but It's not something I've done. I wonder whether your problem has anything to do with the adapters being unidirectional?

Your options are limited. You could use the line out port on the front of the PC. That would limit you to stereo. (The Denon is a multichannel AV receiver, not a stereo receiver.) You'd need a simple adapter (3.5 mm stereo male to two male RCA plugs).

USB to optical (SPDIF) adapters exist, as above, but I'm not sure whether there are any that will do more than two channels.

But how do people in general connect their computer to their stereo system to play their music?

Hi @MalwareT

The schematic diagram below is a simplified version of my current Audio-Video-PC setup.
I've experimented with many solutions to getting audio/video to work for my needs. I tried using HDMI for audio from the PC to the AVR but found the results weren't right for me. So, I purchased a Digital Audio Convertor (DAC) \Headphone Amplifier. This works well for me because I listen to sound in various formats from standard CD level to audiophile. Note that I have all onboard audio and HDMI audio in the PC disabled and use USB for audio.

AV setup.webp
People do this in many ways. If audiophile sound isn't the goal, then Bluetooth can work fine. I went down the USB path from the PC because I'm not a fan of the quality of sound from onboard audio in PC. The final comment I'd make is get one thing working at a time when integrating an AVR with PC etc. It makes it much easier to get it all going.

But how do people in general connect their computer to their stereo system to play their music?
With my multimedia computer, I plug an optical cable into the sound card optical out and then into the CD port on the Denon DRA 800H stereo receiver, then on the remote select CD for the input. Very easy if you have an optical out on a sound card; but I think right now you are limited with a 3.5mm audio port.

USB C is best for conversion as it allows for the most multi bit rates up to 96Khz... Coax supports best transfer (Higher bandwidth) for feeding your Denon amp.

Yes, according to the model number that's it. However, on mine, my HEOS is to the left of the INCommand SERIES, above the SETUP MIC jack. Although, I'm not sure if it's Bluetooth or not because I remember calling their customer service about that and I think that they said that it wasn't. However, I did see the dongle that you posted, and I will call the company about these issues on Monday.
