Not sure that time to run Backups is particularly important -- much more important IMHO is to be able to RECOVER data or System quickly after failure / accidental / or otherwise "incidents".

This Topic/Pool is Necro (subject discussed/voted - is to old to be worth considering) at this point (made in February 2022 and tomorrow is February 2025 = 3 years latter). Someone might bump into it - and might actually think Macrium is the greatest back-up tool around - just because in 2022 was the most convenient (free) back-up tool. :eyeroll: Then they call support - cause of a back-up issue (even here - witnessed more than enough complaints/testimonials in this regard) - and they're simply directed to their paid subscription model Macrium Reflect Home | The complete backup solution for personal use. (even if you paid for it back then - you won't get any support without a new subscription).

Does Veeam, Haslo or some other tool do reminders after x days, even "remind me later"? I need something like this for a non-24/7 system where active backup jobs can be disruptive if forced by schedule.

You could create a calendar reminder?

Thanks, if it works it works! I found an option in Veeam to hold the backup job until a target drive is online, so I could keep my external hard drive disconnected in order to postpone a scheduled backup job if the timing is inconvenient. It should be better than not having a schedule.

EDIT: Strike that, the online target drive option works independently of the schedule, it will trigger a job every time I plug in my external HDD, not what I want! I've instead set my daily schedule to a time when the computer is turned off, which postpones the job until I turn it on. I rarely do anything resource intensive when starting up, and the incremental backup jobs are so fast!

Pertaining to the thread topic, I think there's multiple options that are equally capable as an imaging app, save for some freemium restrictions.

Veeam is great understated tool it turns out. Other apps might feel more approachable without terms that will stump a novice like "active full backup" or "standalone full backup". Other apps might look more configurable, but after trying Veeam I feel like other apps were just placating me. It's only skin deep, believe me. The conveyance features that other apps paywall like incremental backup, fast compression, resource throttling, file-based backup, are directly available and used by default. You just install Veeam, proceed with the default options, and you won't go wrong. That's why I'm personally having a better experience with Veeam than Macrium. It's a no-brainer, there's no reason to not have it installed. At least if your needs are like mine. No wonder that so many recommend it.

For jobs other than OS volume backup, FreeFileSync has been working great for me so far.

I am using synology active backup for every day back up. I do a full backup using macrium 8 free to do an annual backup. This allow me to restore files accidentally deleted. I also copy some active backup file off site.

The active backup has been used to do file restore in the past. I pick macrium because it seemed the most reliable

I really liked Norton Ghost back in 2003. I've used Paragon Backup & Recovery (Registered 2013), Rebit 6 Pro-5.1.3001.14505 (Registered 2015), Acronis True Image, AOMEI Backup, EaseUS Todo Backup Home (Lifetime Upgrades) TWO-LICENSE (If anyone wants one license, you can have it for free - first come first served, I don't believe it is tied to my email, DIRECT MESSAGE me so this thread won't be highjacked with JUNK), Macrium Reflect 8.0.6392 Free (it was nice), MiniTool ShadowMaker Pro Ultimate (lifetime-unlike Macrium X subscription!!). I have saved backup images from Macrium Reflect and ShadowMaker. But now I prefer Hasleo Backup Suite Free 5.0 Release 2, which is VERY full featured.

A poll to see which imaging programs people use. You can select up to three options (eg some people use more than one program or use a regular imaging program plus a cloud based one).

This is why I just bought 2-duplicators, one duel bay M.2 to M.2 and one sata to sata. This sure makes things simple "for me", especially as cheap as both of these type drives now. I can back up everything I normally use on a 250 Gig drive. I know these might not work for some folks, but they work perfectly for me, and I've never had one issue with either duplicator.

Hasleo, since Acronis went the 'all the bloat and kitchen sink' route, and then Macrium went the greedy 'money grubbing rent-an-app' route.

If you ever go the duplicator route, you will never go back. No bloat, just 100% positive results every time.

The tread tile refers to backup software, while the poll is about drive imaging software. While these topics do intersect to a considerable extent within certain application contexts, they are still not the same. So, is it supposed to be about backup or drive imaging? The OP insists on doing backup through drive imaging specifically?

I asked Copilot about this and got the following reply (a bit longish). Make of it what you will..... :-)

Yes, there's a difference between backup software and drive image software. Both serve to protect your data, but they do so in different ways:

1. Backup Software:

  • Purpose: Primarily designed to save copies of your data files, such as documents, photos, and other personal files.
  • Functionality: It usually backs up specific files and folders that you select. It may also allow incremental or differential backups, meaning it only backs up changes made since the last backup, saving time and storage space.
  • Restoration: When you restore from a backup, you're typically restoring individual files or folders, not the entire system.
2. Drive Imaging Software:

  • Purpose: Creates an exact "image" or snapshot of an entire drive or partition, including the operating system, system files, installed programs, and data files.
  • Functionality: It captures the entire state of the drive at a specific point in time. This image can be used to restore the entire system to that exact state, which is useful in case of a major system failure or hardware change.
  • Restoration: When you restore from a drive image, you're restoring the entire system, which means your operating system, programs, and files are all returned to the state they were in when the image was created.
In summary, backup software is great for saving specific data files and folders, while drive imaging software is useful for capturing and restoring an entire system. They can be used complementarily depending on your data protection needs.

If you ever go the duplicator route, you will never go back. No bloat, just 100% positive results every time.

I've had one of the first one you've linked to for many years. They are invaluable for justice about anything you need them for.

Perhaps AI could answer your question, if it is not obvious by context?
No, it cannot. And we don't appreciate suggestions to "ask AI' in this forum. Please refrain from making such suggestions in the future, even if you have nothing better to do. (That is unless you are implying that the thread starter is an AI.)

And no, it is not "obvious by context". Speaking from the experience, I can attest that it often so happens that people are simply oblivious to non-imaging-based backup solutions. So, my question to the OP is: why is the poll so biased towards imaging software? Is it because the OP consciously wants/needs an imager? Or is it the OP never even knew alternative approaches existed?
