Problem with a NVMe drive

I bought a 1TB Crucial NVMe drive and then fitted it into an Orico external case. I found the drive was really quite hard to insert the drive into the drive holder but eventually got it in. However when I plugged the drive into my Ivy Bridge build at a USB3.0 port the drive got really very hot so removed it straight away and I am left wondering what could have gone wrong.
Any ideas would eb appreciated.

Due to compact form factor, NVME drives can get as hot as 80c before it throttles.
Check how hot is hot. You should be able to get a temp reading using Speccy or other software.
There are external case with heat sink that you can buy to help with the temp.

Was the drive recognized and were you transferring files to it yet?

NVMe drives shouldn't get that hot (176°F). I have a Cruical 512GB NVMe and i've not had any problems with it.

Well to answer you all the drive was too hot to touch and it happened so quickly. In DISKPRT and This pc the drive showed up as no media detected yet it gave a letter for that USB port. I will give it another go and check the temp with one of those infra red temperature guns.

I put a Samsung 970 Pro into a Sabrent NVMe external case. While copying files the case was too hot to touch. Drive temp was showing as 62C. The internal drive I was writing to was only at 45C.

Shortly after I got a USB device not recognized error.
It's never worked since. Either the case is destroyed or more likely the SSD, which I can't check without re-installing which I'm not prepared to do.
Never again am I putting an NVMe drive into an external case.

Sorry to hear that.

I just put a Crucial T700 in an enclosure, and cloned C: onto it. (Roughly 200GB written.) The enclosure was warm to the touch, but not hot. I didn't check the drive's temperature. Worked out well. Maybe I was lucky.

The enclosure isn't ideal for frequent swaps of M.2 drives, but I've used it a few times.

Ok I have inserted the drive into the caddy and the temps around 59 degrees. But I cannot get disk management to work properly and This PC view is telling me to insert media. The only way I can bring it up is in the command prompt as disk1 / clean ad then nothing?

Samsung T7 portable SSDs have a 4.8 star rating with almost 26k ratings on amazon in the US. At current NVMe SSD prices is it really still worth grabbing an external USB 3.2 Type-C with NVMe enclosure? I mean, just about any "modern" M.2 NVMe PCIe 3.0 SSD that can sustain speeds somewhere in the 3,000 MB/s - 3,400 MB/s ballpark is going to be seriously held back by USB 3.2 Gen 2×1. Let's face it, USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20 GB/s) is far from ubiquitous. Whereas 10 Gb/s, or 1,250 MB/s (theoretical) typically boils down to only ~1,000 MB/s (or worse) in real-world copying of large files. IF you use the fastest copy tool there is, i.e., FastCopy (free or Pro).

The bottom line IMO is that it's probably only going to be still worth to those who already have an NVMe SSD they no longer use for anything else (e.g. because they have replaced it with a larger capacity and/or better performing one and all internal M.2 slots are occupied). Even if you happen to have a suitable SSD lying around that you could decide to use for this exact purpose, you still need to look at the power consumption spec of the SSD in question, before you grab the type of external enclosure that lacks an adequate heatsink design as a result of it being on the cheap-ish side─or (heavily) overpriced also in addition to being inferiorly designed and/or engineered poorly.

Yes mate I was just experimenting with those drives so I can boot faster on my Ivy Bridge build which is pretty slow by comparison with my other machines. Anyway I think I have narrowed the problem down to the enclosure board being dud / fried whatever and may even have taken the two drives I tried in it. I have contacted the seller EBay wouldn't you know and am going to have to wait until I hear back from them.

Unless one has the cheapest of the cheapest power supply, I can't see the power consumption of an SSD breaking the proverbial bank

BTW, I have a 1TB T5, but I hardly ever use it now being I use OneDrive a lot. But that's me.

Yes Dru mate I have a Corsair 1000 watt PSU which I only bought because it was on offer at the tiem I usually stick to 650-750 watt PSU's

I was being tongue-in-chic as any power supply should handle the power draw of an SSD drive

And BTW both my main and backup feature 1000-watt power supplies, but that's not the point of the discussion here.

Separate the HDD from the case you attempt to fit it into.

My assumption is that the high temperatures are a result of my having the same HDD as yours.

In any case for Idol should be 30c to 38c idol.

But you say 50-plus is a bit too much.

Be sure to check that you are using Celceus or Fehrnight when reading the temp

I always run CrystalDiskInfo in taskbar to keep an eye on drive temps. Use four NVMe enclosures of various makes for different laptops. The most taxing work for the drives is when Macrium is verifying a new image. Have had no issues fortunately.

The power supply isn't the reason why you need to look at the power consumption spec. Rather, it's the generation of heat that results.

You could easily get those kind of enclosures from Amazon with easy return process. Ebay may take forever.
Are you trying to boot up an nvme drive via USB 3.0?

Yes mate it was just an experiment on my part and I think that either the control chip on the enclosure board or the drive itself got cooked because as I mentioned earlier they were a very tight fit to put together. Anyway I have contacted both sites and being Sunday don't expect any replies until tomorrow at the least. As by the by I was interested too because my Asus Vivo book also has a NVMe drive and was also curious about cooling that with one of those flat copper backed cooling pads as the air flow system in the laptop is pretty ordinary to sad to be honest - it's just a fan blowing air from outside across the motherboard no direct flow to the CPU and other components. As many comments I have seen lately Asus seem to have got to being rather skimpy with what they put out now which is a shame seeing that I have been a real fan of their stuff for years now.
