Question for frequent restorers

@Edwin The folder with the .eml files will have to have its own separate backup. Otherwise (without its own separate backup) the restore from a backup a few days ago will wipe out the emails from those last few days. Same with new and changed files from those last few days, they would also be wiped out. For infrequent restores, you can take precautions, but for frequent restores, it would become a PITA.

The 'separate backup' (of emails and new and changed files) could be in the cloud but that has its own set of issues.

I never heard of anyone doing or recommending doing a separate backup before restoring the backup created on day -1 hence my curiosity.
As a matter of fact I have said exactly that, more than a dozen times on here and on Tenforums over the past few years... my personal data is always excluded from image and the part of personal data that is important to me is copied onto external media always separately.
I know that some people are doing both daily backups and sync, bravo for the diligence (y)
My most critical data is backed up automatically and within milliseconds after it gets saved to my private cloud storage.

OK, I must have missed that, glad that someone agrees with me :-)

No concern about malware hitting both?

Edit: I may have missed something, care to elaborate on your backup system/method?

@Edwin The folder with the .eml files will have to have its own separate backup.
I'll send stuff to another drive, if I have to do a Restore.

OK, so an extra precaution to secure your 'stuff', then, and not just solely rely on the restore (y)

I own an Asus RT-AX92U 2 Pack so I just keep SMBv1 turned off and I use the Smart Sync option that's under AiCloud 2.0. The USB 3.0 port on each node is fast enough for it to qualify as a simple NAS replacement, and USB 3.0 hubs are supported by it. As for the potential risk of malware attacks targeting the routers, that will always be a valid concern excepting only maybe if you keep them all disconnected from the internet─and put on your 7-layered tinfoil hat. :D

@hdmi Thanks, although I wasn't thinking of the router as the target of a malware attack. I was thinking of the fallible human allowing a malware attack on one copy and the synced copy is also attacked. Anyway, nice to know how others backup their digital assets (y)

I keep a dedicated machine in my house that acts as a file server. I don't login and use it, it's headless sitting in closet. I have mapped drives to that server from all machines in my house. Important stuff goes on this system, rather than staying on the local computer.

In addition to the hard drives in that computer that run the OS and store the data, I also keep another drive in the box. I have a robocopy job that runs daily, and it makes a secondary copy of my data, and it goes to folders called Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,Thursday,Friday,Saturday, and Sunday. This way if I screw something up, I have a 7 day rotation to catch it before my daily copies are overwritten.

In addition, i have a macrium backup of the data from time to time, and i store one of those backup copies offsite in the even of a disaster to my home.

The synced copy is protected by the 2nd router that also uses AiCloud 2.0, and is in another geographic location.

@pparks1 I have a similar system with a big difference, I avoid networking to make it difficult for malware to hop from one device to another.

@hdmi If the system results in synced copies, the particular implementation doesn't matter, IMHO. A malware attack on one copy affects the other.
