I have a Win 10 Pro PC upstairs which I want to access from my Win 11 Pro laptop downstairs using Windows Remote Desktop but get this error every time I attempt to access it. I have had this working previously but it's driving me daft this time. Suggestions very welcome.
If you haven't made any changes to the remote desktop services I would suggest checking the firewall profile in use on the Win11 machine. From that machine use the following Powershell command, I also suggest running Powershell "as admin" in case you need to switch the profile.
Powershell:
Get-NetConnectionProfile
# If NetworkCategory is Public you need to change it to Private# To Change to Private...Set-NetConnectionProfile -NetworkCategory Private
I had a similar issue when I first used remote desktop.
For me, it turned out that because I had never used a password to login to the computer I was trying to connect to, when Remote Desktop tried to connect, the target computer refused the connection because it didn't recognise its own password (as a password had never been used to log into the target computer)
In general; I have been seeing lately, that Remote Desktop has an issue in some cases, connecting to a computer that is set to use a pin as apposed to passwords. I don’t think you’re alone with this problem.
I would try first:
Going upstairs (sorry) and logging into Windows using your Microsoft Account & Password. Then retry remote desktop.
I believe this needs to be done at leat once so that the target computer knows its own password for future connections/reference.
If you have previously used a password to log into Windows on the target computer, then I am not sure why it wont connect, less the following suggestion.
I would try disabling the pin login on the target computer to see if that helps with the connection (as read in other forums).
Is there any way you can move the computer downstairs, or the downstairs computer upstairs whilst you try to work this out? Or are both desktops and one of them not a laptop?

To add, I have never had to do the following, but it makes sense.
The video is voiceless and has a horrible whistling background track, I’d suggest turning the volume down to avoid going bananas. A lot of pausing might be required.

The bottom line is this: If you logon using Windows Hello (something other than a password), then all you need to do is logon to the system one time using the password and then Remote Desktop will work from then on.

The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.
