Personalization Reset and Re-register Windows Spotlight in Windows 11

This tutorial will show you how to reset and re-register Windows Spotlight for your account in Windows 11.

In Windows 11, you can have Windows Spotlight as a theme and display different background images on your desktop and lock screen, and occasionally offers suggestions on the lock screen.

If Windows Spotlights stops working and/or stops changing the background image, you can reset and re-register Windows Spotlight to fix it.


Windows Spotlight will not work while connected to a metered network (ethernet or wireless), or in Battery Saver mode.

Windows Spotlight requires Background Apps to be turned on.


Sometimes it may take 24 to 48 hours after resetting for Windows Spotlight to sync again.


Another option is to use the Windows spotlight, dynamic images theme.

4 Save the ZIP file to your desktop.

5 Unblock the ZIP file.

6 Extract the BAT file from the ZIP file.

7 Run the BAT file.

8 Restart the computer to apply.

9 After you sign in, you can change your desktop background back to Windows Spotlight if wanted. (see screenshot below)

It may have sorted itself out within 4 days anyway. Each folder in IrisService holds 4 images, and In my experience Desktop spotlight doesn't download a new set until it has looped through all four of them, one each day.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Not in my case, I have been stuck on that one image for a week or more.

Would it make sense to add this in the script... deleting anything under IrisService if it exists? If the user isn't using Spotlight for the desktop than this folder doesn't exist.

I "believe" it is only created after you turn on Spotlight for the desktop background. The first image is displayed and after the first image rotates to the second image, that folder is created with the images inside. Have you been using Spotlight for the desktop image?

I had just turned it on for the Desktop to see if the folder would be there. I'll let it cycle for a bit now.

Windows comes pre-loaded with a default set of four images for Desktop Spotlight in:
C:\Windows\SystemApps\MicrosoftWindows.Client.CBS_cw5n1h2txyewy\DesktopSpotlight\Assets\Images

It will use these first, and may take a few days before actually downloading a new set to the IrisSevice folder.

I found an old note that was added when they changed the Windows Spotlight for the Desktop as a separate process from the one for the Lock Screen.
The P.S. command resets the application that is handling the pictures for the desktop background.
A reset brings back the default 4 pictures and updates the registry with a date and time for the refresh. Then it should eventually download new pictures at the scheduled time.
The command should be issued while Spotlight is not selected. Select Spotlight again after a reboot.
Is this still valid?

Get-AppxPackage MicrosoftWindows.Client.CBS -AllUsers | Reset-AppxPackage

Hello Brink,
The Spotlight for the Desktop is now handled separately from the Lockscreen Spotlight.
The pictures are loaded on this Folder used by MicrosoftWindows.Client.CBS App.
It may take over 48 hours to get a new set of Desktop pictures after resetting the App that handles them.

C:\Users\userid\AppData\Local\Packages\MicrosoftWindows.Client.CBS_cw5n1h2txyewy\LocalCache\Microsoft\IrisService

I see that, but I don't see anything resetting or reinstalling MicrosoftWindows.Client.CBS.
What am I missing?
The IrisService is not in this path listed in the BAT file:

It is in MicrosoftWindows.Client.CBS_cw5n1h2txyewy

The time showing for Desktop WallpaperRefresh is showing in the registry with date and GMT time (Z), same for other related DesktopSpotlight events.

Windows Spotlight can indeed be buggy at times. You can try resetting it again to see if it may help this round.
