I use Wordpad as a standalone app tucked away in a Folder. I used this old Windows 7 tutorial to create a template of what settings I wanted to use in Wordpad. I saved the template in the same folder as the workpad executable files, I then made a shortcut to the template which can be pinned to the taskbar if you want,. Click it and a blank wordpad document will open.

If I open a .rtf file anywhere on my computer, it opens in wordpad. Yes it is a workaround, but it does work, at least for me.
WordPad Custom Template Workaround

And yes you are correct. I do not have a context menu item of "rich text document", because I don't want it there. If I want to create a .rtf file, I simply click on the shortcut icon. I have cut my context menus down as far as I can and rarely use wordpad..

My registry looks like this as does my file associations. (see screenshots)

I think someone here is suffering from whatever...
I can't let that pass without a remark, Why something doesn't work for you, I can not say, but others are able to get it to work. It doesn't give you the right to throw shade on anyone here due to your frustration. We're not here for our health. We are all volunteers trying to help out when and where we can.

Since MS decided to deprecate Wordpad, it's awonder anyone could revive it at all. If you do not want to use MS Office, there are a number of free solutions for dealng with .rtf files. LibreOffice is free and excellent. It can open and work with most any type of document file.

please help me out, for I have a lot of rtf files...
You say you have a lot of .rtf files..., do they open in WordPad by default?
Why so desperate to be able to create null files on the Desktop? That operation is pointless!

Okay...,
let's go this way:
In the first place, I've always thought it pointless to create a null file on the Desktop, why not open a blank document and get to work right away?

@ruudtes
Also..., in your reg screenshots, you have no associated programs ID's,
is .rtf associated with WordPad on your PC?

If all else fails, you could also create your own right click entry to open a separate instance...

I think the thing is that I'm on a freshly installed Windows 11 Home system (22 November 2024)(OS build 26100.2314), installed on a completely empty hard disk.
I would so very much like to know if you can get the same "right click + new" result on such a setup.
I am sure that you won't be able to with your present day instructions that I exactly followed. I dare you.

(Maybe it's easy for me to write these things, as I have five computers and three laptops.)(So, sorry for that then.)

No problem, let me install it as I have probably twice as many systems as you do.
I have no 'freshly' installed home but that should not take too long.
Never heard the term 'freshly' installed said before by other IT staff.
What's the opposite of that? 'Rotten' install?
I will need to build the ISO in order to perform that 'fresh' install

to Glasskuter:
you write that I: "throw shade on anyone here"
I politely reacted to the OAT comment "You are suffering from confirmation bias"
and to the OAT comment "You are either doing something wrong or you cannot follow simple directions, or both".

I reacted with this: "I think someone here is suffering from whatever..."
And that was after I installed Windows 11 Home especially for him/her from scratch again on a different computer and after doing exactly what was written and after getting the same result again. No result.

I think that I have stayed polite. I would never ever write that someone is suffering from confirmation bias, nor that someone cannot follow simple directions.
Well, now I kind of did so, say it that I wrote "whatever". No a specific accusation.
Enough about that.

Now about the rest of your comment.
It is not that I am frustrated, it is just that the tips here do not work anymore. And to let that know will help myself and others, that is my goal.

What I do most of the time with rtf files: put a comment, usually with a clickable url in it, in a folder where I have files of programs, images, videos et cetera.
I use that a lot, and the fastest way is the present Windows 10 way.

I know many ways to get around this, but the simplest would be so beautiful.

Anyone else who dived into this? Please, tell us.
Thanks in advance, very very much.

I'm on Win 11 HOME (26100.2454 - 24H2), and I have Wordpad installed (Winaero)

The "add .rtf to the New menu" does NOT work.

@ruudtes
Do me a favor:
Under .rtf change the (Default) REG_SZ value from rtf_auto_file...

8552.webp

... to Word.RTF.8, exactly as you see it! Then Restart Explorer.
It should work...

Sorry check my vid I just posted on a new installation of 26100.2314.

All I see is a file, probably an .RTF
But it disappears so fast.

I have Wordpad installed, but I can't get: New > Rich text format ...on the context menu.

to OAT:
I think the thing is that I'm on a freshly installed Windows 11 Home system (22 November 2024)(OS build 26100.2314), installed on a completely empty hard disk.
I would so very much like to know if you can get the same "right click + new" result on such a setup.
I am sure that you won't be able to with your present day instructions that I exactly followed. I dare you.
@ruudtes

As requested, installed 26100.2314 & same result on 26100.2314
