What the vid? It's a 56 second segment, did you play it?

If you're talking about post #36... at first I didn't notice the black control bar underneath the video.
I now saw that it worked for you.

But it still doesn't work for me. I even used the reg code you posted... and then when I still didn't have it on the NEW menu, I used the same reg code from Winaero.

I dunno what's different, but I can't get it to work. :(

Don't lose any sleep over it. I can just open Wordpad and make a new .rtf file. :-)

I just created a NEW > Text Document and changed the file extension from .txt to .rtf
That worked, just for that one file. :D

I've done a little experimenting, and I think I can see what's going on.

For ShellNew to work, the default value of .rtf needs to point to a filetype that will contain amongst other things the descriptive name of the file type.

In a clean install of 24H2 that doesn't exist. Until @Ghot checked his clean build this wasn't picked up at all. I think that on a clean install of 23H2 or earlier this filetype will be rtffile.

So, if you don't have this you'll need to add it. An obvious thing to do would be to copy this from a clean install (i.e. with no office software) of 23H2. You might be lucky and find that the only requirement was that there was a default value for the rtffile entry, but it wouldn't surprise me if more was required.

I think that it's supposed to be the case that an upgrade install of 24H2 doesn't remove WordPad, so chasing down all the relevant registry entries as well as the files from 23H2 would enable you to restore wordpad properly. I've had a look at the installer from winaero, and that doesn't do that. It does add the 'App Path' registry entries, so wordpad or write from the run menu will start the program. The winaero installer doesn't include WordpadFilter.dll which makes sense as without the relevant registry entries it won't add anything.

And in passing, there's no need to log off and on or restart explorer to see your registry changes take effect. Most happen straight away, but adding or removing the ShellNew item requires a shellrefresh, Nirsoft's nircmd will do this.

to OAT: first of all: THANKS A LOT ! (I played your video)
second: I would LOVE to receive the *.reg file that you used for this.
would you be so kind to send it to me at ruudtes at hotmail dot com?
this is to make sure I can do what you did, and to be absolutely certain that there is no confusion as to which registry file to use
(I know I am asking a lot of your patience, sorry for that.)

to GHOT, the three starred guru vip: What a find! That works! Though it is a little step more, it works perfectly (one has to change the name "New Text Document" anyway, so those extra three letters are no problem at all).
THANKS a lot! You really did a great find. A fourth star if you can come up with a reg file & the rest of the fix to get all back to "normal"...

But I would not be surpised if this will remain a problem as Wordpad may cause a safety issue as it probably won't be updated anymore.

I have a thought: as OAT did a clean (opposite of a dirty) install, it still might be dirty, for using his existing MS account while installing, probably may result in importing Windows 11 settings that are on that account. But I really have no clue what is imported, so I may be totally wrong. Just guessing.

Another thought: I used the UK release. I would not be surprised if there is a difference between an European and an US release.

to Skeptik Mike: at the moment I'm putting back an image of 23H2 to the 24H2 machine. I will give it a go with your tips. Thanks in advance. I will come with the results later, after my visit to the dentist and a visit of one of my friends this afternoon.
Oops (not): Rescuezilla did it in 8.1 minutes!

I think it would help you told us exactly which registry entries, need to say... what.

Well, my previous post reflected what I found out by seeing how to break ShellNew for .rtf files. I was uncomfortable with some of the exchanges in the thread, and the OPs posts suggested a difference (the lack of default value for .rtf) that was worth checking. So, I did all of my tests on 23H2, as I haven't been 'offered' an update.

I've had a look at what refers to wordpad in the registry, and there's a lot of stuff. Some relates to windows maintenance and some to event log handling and some to registration of wordpad as a COM object.

I think that minimally the following changes should enable ShellNew to work. I'm assuming that
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.rtf isn't present, if it is and it has a default value don't use the second registry change. Note that the registry values starting with hex(2): are REG_EXPAND_SZ type, and will be pointing to the default location of wordpad: %ProgramFiles%\Windows NT\Accessories\WORDPAD.EXE
and you'll have to edit them to point to wherever you've put the wordpad executable file.

with HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes . However, most people prefer to make system wide changes. If you do attack HKCR directly do export the keys you are changing so you can delete the keys you've changed and import the original values.

Note that I haven't included the changes needed to register wordpad as an application for .rtf files, as I think that you should be able to force the association of .rtf files and wordpad.

"to Edwin" doesn't do anything. It's nice, but doesn't light up the "Alert" bell.

@Edwin <------- that lights up his Alert bell. :-)

He's not online at the moment, but when he comes online... he will see the alert, and know that someone is talking to him.

to Ghot: thank you for the Windows 11 Tweaks link, I will definitely study it.
I just used Rescuezilla to put the 24H2 image back (my Windows 11 size is 20.628.275.200 bytes), it took 6.1 minutes. I doubt that AOMEI can beat that.
(I had serious problems with AOMEI in te past, which is why I will never ever use it anyway.)
Thanks for the "Quote" & reply tip!

so

the solution for those who cannot get a working fix for the issue Right click - New - Rich Text Document:

choose Right click - New - Text Document
and then change New Text Document.txt into New Text Document.rtf

of course you first have to install Wordpad (if it is not on your computer), you can download it for free here:

It all depends on how much "used space" is on the C: partition. (Windows partition).
I have 37GB total on my C: partition.
At default settings, it takes me 1.5 minutes to make a backup and 2.5 minutes to restore from a backup (Macrium Reflect).

AOMEI and Hasleo run at pretty much the same speed. :-)

I install large programs and games on my storage drives, instead of my C: partition.
This keeps the "used space" small, which makes the backups and restores, very fast.

It's sort of like... building dikes.
A one kilometer long dike takes longer to build than a .3 kilometer long dike. :D

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

  45,00,22,00,20,00,22,00,25,00,31,00,22,00,00,00

I would apply these changes to my profile, i.e. replace HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
with HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes .

@Skeptic Mike

Created an account (with a typo in my name) just to confirm that these registery tweaks work on a clean (January 1st 2025) Windows 11 Pro 24H2 installation. I copied over WordPad from my old Windows 10 image made with AOMEI Backupper.

All i had to do was restart the file explorer.

Restore 'New .rtf file" to menu on desktop of Win 11 finally fixed ! ! !

Wow! Thank you so much! Finally the right click sub menu "New" shows the option "Rich Text Document" ! ! !
You did it ! ! !
As far as I'm concerned the Nobel prize is underway ! ! !

(Even though "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.rtf" was already there I used BOTH reg files, and it worked perfectly.)

Now my Windows 11 runs as I want it (*), like it was when Wordpad was still there.

(*) With the exception of the missing personal taskbar, disabling that is the worst decision that the Microsoft team ever made.)
