Hi
I have recently changed my VM router and have been unable to logon wirelessly due to windows not allowing more than 8 characters when inputting the password. How can I remove this limit or change it to 12? TIA for any help you are able to provide.

Welcome to Eleven Forum.

Where are you seeing this 8 character limit? A screenshot would help us understand.

My router's Wi-Fi key is 12 character long and I have no problem connecting. Likewise, signing in to my router's web admin page is not an issue with its 17 character password.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.

Although it says "usually 8 digits" it wont allow me to enter more than eight. This has not been aproblem in the past,Login.jpg

"The shortest password allowed with WPA2 is 8 characters long. A password of 14 or 15 characters should be long enough to defeat most brute force guessing. Still, 16 would be better. The German government recommends 20 characters as a minimum. In February 2023, the US National Security Agency (NSA) also said to use at least 20 characters. WPA2 passwords can be up to 63 characters long." (I myself use 24 characters, computer generated)

WPA2 (the technology that most routers in use are capable of) is still not a very secure technology, hence the recommendation to use really long passwords. The improved WPA3 has been released in 2018, but it is still not very common, I think.

Your router is defaulting to a WPS connection (which only uses a PIN).

Click on Connect using a security key instead, and enter the normal password.

Hi - this worked great on another PC with Windows 10 on it that I was having the same problem with, however, it did not work with my laptop which has Windows 11 home on it.
