Returning 23H2; Blocking 24H2

I am having problems non stop with 24H2 that may or not have been reported already. I have pretty much only ASUS hardware in my PC so I know that has been reported but I also play games, BF2042 is one, that has known issues that are not yet in the bug list, but that might be an ASUS issue. Not sure.

I want to reinstall Windows 11. It appears that presently the version that I have is 23H2 that I got a few days ago from Windows Media Creation Tool but it wants to update to 24H2 as soon as I run updates. How can I get all the updates except for that one?

1. Open the Start Menu.
2. Type regedit.exe and select the Registry Editor search result.
3. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
4. On the right side, set TargetReleaseVersion to 1.
5. If the value does not exist, right-click a blank area on the right side, and select New > Dword (32-bit) Value, and name it: TargetReleaseVersion ...and set it to 1
6. On the right side, set TargetReleaseVersionInfo to 23H2.
7. If the value does not exist, right-click a blank area on the right side, and select New > String Value, and name it: TargetReleaseVersionInfo ...and set it to 23H2.
8. Restart the PC.

Does this make it so that you still get the updates, security and others, for 23H2 or does it stop once it has 23H2?

You'll still get all the 23H2 updates, etc., but it won't upgrade to 24H2.

Just make sure to do the registry tweak, BEFORE you connect the internet, after the clean install.

I always disconnect the internet when doing a clean install.
That way, I'll have the time to do any tweaks that need done, before the new install has an internet connection.

Another tweak you should do before connecting the internet...




Sometimes.... MS includes drivers with the Windows updates.
And sometimes, these drivers can conflict with already installed drivers... causing problems.
After doing the "block drivers" tutorial, the MS drivers will still show up, but will now be "optional".

I don't know what to do here. Windows Media Creation Tool is pushing out 24H2, but an earlier version. I am 99% sure I had 24H1 on my last version of Windows. But I cannot find a legit download link. Is there a repository out there with unaltered .isos that I can utilize? I have my PID.txt ready to be dropped in the sources folder. I just need the software.

There is no such thing as 24H1, there was 23H2, next came 24H2.

Microsoft only provides the media creation tool for 24H2 now, but all the older MCTs are still on Microsoft's servers. If you run the MediaCreationTool.bat script is will download an old MCT of your choice and allow you to run it to make the install media for any version of Windows you'd like. Run it and choose 23H2, then when asked choose MCT Defaults. This will download the 23H2 MCT from Microsoft, allowing you to make an install USB or an ISO, downloading all the components direct from Microsoft, just as it used to do before 24H2 was released.

This will work. Though, I wish it was a newer version of 23H2. Just going through the Windows Setup screens, you can tell it's rather old.

I wonder how much performance difference there is between a clean updated system vs. a system that has all the updates and packages built into the OS when installed.

Microsoft do not keep updating their downloads every month to keep them completely up to date. They only issue a new ISO after significant changes. As I recall there were two or maybe three versions of the 23H2 ISO, your would be the latest. Being out of date is of no significance though. It takes just one Cumulative Update to catch up, either by letting Setup check for updates during the install, or Windows Update afterwards.

Depends on how long the system had been installed, how many CUs it had had in its life, how much software had been installed and uninstalled again, and how well it had been cleaned up during all that time. My System One got the W10 > W11 upgrade in October 2021 and all the upgrades since. Its 24H2 seems as responsive today as it was in 2021. Others may not be so lucky, preferring to clean install at each new version.

If you mean the difference between a clean install that requires an immediate CU to get up to date, vs. a clean install that is already the latest build, then there's probably little or no difference.
