Rumored... Windows File Explorer will tie into OneDrive, Microsoft 365

I don,t use One Drive or file explorer. I never found the use for either one.

File Explorer is the heart of Windows.
Yeah, and that makes File/Windows Explorer very attractive as a vehicle for integrating all of MS' services, present and future.

I hope I don't have the break out my Win 7 DVD, one of these days. :/
I wish that the future File/Windows Explorer has 2 modes, selectable with a single mouse click:

1) Local/Focussed for working with your computer like in the olden days, albeit with all the benefits of current technology

2) Inclusive/Interconnected for working with the world via your computer, e.g. Internet at large, OneDrive, Teams, etc.

I would be VERY happy with a 2-mode File/Windows Explorer (at the present time it's an unstructured mess with a single mode File/Windows Explorer, IMHO, it is sometimes not even clear whether you are working locally or with the world)

I hope you're right, but I'm not gonna bet the farm on it.
MS hasn't been very generous about 2-mode anything, so far.

And OneDrive is like a black hole, sucking in all of our files.
We must break away. We need more speed Scotty!

Well, we could use a 3rd party File/Windows Explorer that gives us the separation/choice, if MS drives the 'seamless integration' model to the point where we think our computer is part of a zombie network :eek1:

I think it's all a bit unnerving...,

If, for example, during a connection glitch, I see a banner across the screen saying: "To browse files on your PC, please check your internet connection",
that'll be the end of the line for me! 🤷‍♂️

MisterEd above said that he lost some files when he first tried to remove OD. I currently have all documents, etc., stopped from being saved to OD. If I use Revo to uninstall OD completely from the pc will that work without any problems?

Hard to tell. Probably the smartest thing to do would be make a backup of your Windows install, and then use REVO to remove OneDrive.

IF... you lose files you can always restore to the backup you just made.

There are free backup softwares out there, like Macrium Reflect or AOMEI Backupper, that you can use.

I'm all for improvements, but how about "opt-in" rather than foisting these integrations with services that not everyone wants or uses and leaving them to figure out how to rid themselves of it after the fact and causing potential issues with the OS as a whole? How hard would it be to implement a registry flag to turn these kinds of features on/off? Should be dead simple, right?

Gack. This news...

I just got a new Win 11 PC a month ago, my first on the OS. It's been an uphill task, but I've finally gotten File Explorer usable and actually like it quite a bit now. I disabled OneDrive per the tutorial here, as Google Drive fits me better. I guess now it's time to take the next step and go ahead and pre-emptively uninstall OneDrive. If they make too big a mess of File Explorer, then I'm hoping @Brink can guide us with tutorials and patches to clean it up.

I have been doing that for a long time (couple years) with no problems whatever.
In fact, uninstalling OneDrive with Revo is one of the first things I do on a fresh Install (and again after installing Office 365).
I use OneDrive, but access it via its website.

Ghot, that's what I'll do later. I'm a Macrium user so no problem...just have to set up the dock, etc.. Thanks.

I don't care if Microsoft wants to include OneDrive with Windows 10 and 11. I just hate that Windows installs it without asking you if you want it or not.
I think that Microsoft is doing this for the average user. For many people, having their files stored safely in the cloud eliminates their personal need to keep backups of their system.

I find OneDrive very useful, as it gives me easy access from all of my devices (Android phone, Linux machines, my Mac's), as well as being able to access personal files from work.

Not me, I do not trust Microsoft or any other on line storage app. Office 365 is also an online app.

I dumped OneDrive a long time ago when it decided to not sync random files, no rhyme or reason to which files it missed, it just ignored them. Thanks to the people recommending alternatives. Downloading three to try now (y)

OneDrive syncs flawlessly for me across my two Microsoft Windows 11 computers, my Android Phone, and even my Apple iPad Pro that sits permanently on my grand piano's music desk for my music scores. I've used my 1TB Cloud OneDrive for many years and wouldn't be without it.
