You don't have to sign up for anything. It's a typical classic Adobe teaser-trap. Look for somewhere on the popup to just close that sign up window

When you download the Free Adobe Reader, there is a couple of check boxes by default already checked that you have to Un-check to not install the bundled McAfee apps. Most people rush through this part and just click Next without unchecking those boxes.

There are several PDF programs listed in that link, all are free to download, some are trial apps. I don't know which one you clicked on that is a trial version?

Adobe Reader has always been free it may nag you to upgrade to Adobe Acrobat once, but just click no and it won't bother you again.
