A virus can just jump onto or off a usb stick as soon as it’s inserted - unless auto run has been disabled on either the computer or the usb stick (which is why I use panda usb vaccinator which stops this happening).

I would make sure no other wifi devices are turned on until you have this one sorted- just in case it’s a Trojan that can jump to devices via the WiFi network - I had one of those once. The only infection I ever had - and it came from an infected usb stick.

If you are certain of that then your InstallUSB will not have been infected.

As mentioned the system is dead so can't get to mwb or anything else. If I can turn it on again, I will go to the sites mentioned.

It’s probably safest to get a new usb stick. If you install a little program called panda antivirus it “vaccinates” any use stick that is put in the computer. It doesn’t mean the usb stick can’t still get a virus - it just means the virus can’t get off the usb stick onto a computer.

Is this your friend’s system? If you get a view usb stick you could download Malwarebytes chameleon onto your laptop and save the file to the usb stick. The chameleon aspect means it dodges virus attempts to stop it running. That usb stick may then need to be binned. Maybe just get a few cheap ones. But if it wont start up ….. It sounds like you’ll need a bootable offline antivirus - I’ve used the kaspersjy or trend micro ones before.

As a side note:
In cases such as this, always be prepared to perform an Emergency Restart...,
if anything, it will buy you some time while it performs a full TaskKill.

Here you are - Trend Micro rescue disk. You download it on a good computer and follow the instructions to install it to a usb stick. That usb stick is then bootable - so you just hit escape when pressing the start button, with the usb in the computer - and select the boot menu and from that, select the usb stick. It starts up and offline antivirus scanner.

Is it possible the transformer has a problem. When I look at the back of the pc, there is a blinking light - when I unplug it and turn back on, it stays solid and the power light in the front comes on briefly and then turns off. That sounds like a power connection problem.

It may depend on the case, but, you should always be able to go Ctrl/Alt/Delete, then hold Ctrl while pressing the Power button...
... and, try it as immediately as possible...

See if it will boot from Trend Micro rescue disc maybe? That would remove an infection but you might still need checking out by Bleeping computer to be sure everything is gone. If that won’t boot … then think again.

Maybe @Patsy1011 did that, because in #2 she supposed the message was found to be a scam.
As far as I remember, it already was marked then.
Which later on appeared not to be true.

I don't know if there is a possibility to unmark the topic, never started a topic myself.
