I personally don't do beta builds no matter what the supposed benefits might be. If you want to be a tester for MS then go for it but I prefer something that most of the kinks have already been worked out. Even the official releases still have plenty of hiccups.

Beta Builds? Who said anything about Beta Builds? Certainly not me!!! I have never run Beta Builds. That's insane!!!

Yes, X-Lite released 24H2 eons ago, based on the MS 24H2. I've been running it for many months, and in several updated versions, currently "Optimum 11, 24H2, V4.2, with V4.3 soon to be released. And YES, I will download that version just as soon as it's ready.
It's the smallest and fastest OS I've ever installed. And runs GREAT on my 12 yr old PC.*

* as long as your CPU has the SSE4.2 Instruction set, you're good to install 24H2. Without that instruction set, 24H2 will install, but WILL NOT RUN!!! And so far, there is NO workaround.:crys:

Cheers Mate! Happy Computing!

Although 24H2 has already been released for Copilot+ PCs with Snapdragon X processors, it's only in the Insider Preview channel for PCs with Intel/AMD processors at present. The public release of 24H2 is expected in October, safest to wait until it's offered through Windows Update.

Having said that, I already run 24H2 Release Preview on a couple of my machines, and won't hesitate to update my main machines as soon as it is officially released.

Windows 11 24H2 AMD64 builds have actually been out of the beta channel for quite some time now, and are currently released under the 'release preview' channel. The release preview channel is essentially the same as the public release channel, but made available to insiders a few weeks ahead of the general public.

I agree that running a Beta build isn't ideal for people who prefer stability and functionality, but I have had no issues running 24H2 release preview builds as my primary OS on any of my own PCs, and would recommend them to anyone who is comfortable running public release channel builds.

MS has also been releasing publicly available standalone updates through their MS Catalog service for AMD64 24H2 release preview builds for months now, which is not typical, as they usually only do this when builds reach the public release channel, making the AMD64 builds seem even more like 'public channel' releases, even though still technically release preview.

Regardless, we will likely see the shift from release preview to public channel within the next month or two, and in my experience with 24H2 so far, I would recommend them in their current state without hesitation to users concerned about stability, as you will likely find they provide the stability and functionality you'd expect from public channel releases.

Welcome to Eleven Forum.

Yes, I agree with all that you said.

Not only that, but if you have installed 24H2 without joining Insiders, then you'll still get all those public updates through Windows Update, another thing that makes it feel more like a public release.

I'd still recommend waiting until the public launch, that may only be a month away now. A supported device on 23H2 should be offered the 24H2 update through Windows Update.

But if you must, then if you can get an ISO for the Insider Release Preview 24H2 build 26100 then you can use it to do an in-place upgrade, keeping all your files and apps.

On a high end desktop like that. Why in the world would you want to???
I get all my ISOs straight from the folks that designed it rather than some custom build from someone I have absolutely no knowledge of who they are or where they're from. They can insert stuff into an ISO just as easy as they can take stuff out of it.

If you don't have a "Co-Pilot+ PC" or aren't running the Insiders channel, you won't get be offered 24H2 at this time. With those limitations stated is also the reason I don't have it. Do I feel like I'm missing anything.... no. Will I get it when released to all... yes.

If you don't have a "Co-Pilot+ PC" or aren't running the Insiders channel, you won't get be offered 24H2 at this time. With those limitations stated is also the reason I don't have it. Do I feel like I'm missing anything.... no. Will I get it when released to all... yes.
I agree that there is no imperative urgency or rush to move from 23H2 to 24H2, but for those who would like to make the jump early, now is a perfectly fine time to do so IMO based on personal experience using 24H2.

and waht are you toughts on x-lite? is it safe? how do we know there is no keyloggers?
My thoughts on on any custom ISO, is that you should first test and scan them in a Virtual Machine before deciding to install on your PC. Using 3rd party Scanners will likely pick up any malware. If your test and scans are favorable, then go ahead and give it a try on your PC if you're interested to see what it offers. I've been using custom builds for years, and have no hesitation to use them personally, but certainly ensure that they are clean and safe to use beforehand.

The current AMD64 24H2 builds are a little different than I recall from prior years.

They are in the RP (release preview) insider channel. But if you install one, you may get updates through Windows Update, even if you aren't enrolled in the RP insider program. (I know that from personal experience.)

It's closer to the release version than a Beta, Dev, or Canary build. I've been running it, without any issues.

You can install 24H2 over 23H2 as an upgrade, from an ISO. The most convenient place (IMHO) to get an ISO is from uupdump.net.

One thing: it wouldn't be permitted to go back by installing 23H2 over 24H2. If you decide to try it, I strongly recommend imaging 23H2 before upgrading to 24H2. That would get you past the 10 day limit for reverting using windows.old.

Would it be worth installing? Maybe.

Nothing there that's life-altering for me. I like to play, but not enough to use Beta or less finalized builds.

Imaging is an essential precaution. But for added security you can also extend the 10 day limit up to a maximum of 60 days.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Beta Builds? Who said anything about Beta Builds? Certainly not me!!! I have never run Beta Builds. That's insane!!!

To me anything that hasn't been released to the entire public yet is still beta. Maybe not technically but is to me and even then I normally wait a while until after the release to install/upgrade. Will be interesting to read the glitches here after the release. ;-)

My only point is if you want it now, join the Insiders or get a Co-Pilot+ PC. At this point (for me), I don't see the urgency. Sure, if it were available (without Co-Pilot+ or joining insiders) I'd have it, but it isn't so I'm willing to wait.

As far as custom ISO's and all that jazz, I'm afraid those days have passed me by. Today, I just create a normal ISO and install that. No tweaks or any of that stuff. I also find I have far less issues than when I tweaking to death. Also, why I left the Insiders.

That's me.

All good (y)

Well tighten your knickers and put on your reading glasses because there will be some. There always are. That's not to say those glitches will all be on MS but also to the thousands of variations of hardware and user configurations out there.

Windows 11 versions: release, release preview, beta, dev, canary.

I guess I assume that release preview is, well, a preview of the release version. I've never had a significant issue with an RP build.

I wouldn't be afraid of installing it. On the other hand, it's mostly pointless, unless you could benefit from one or more of its new features.
