I dunno.

It's the standard method for upgrading using an ISO:

Download the ISO (probably from uupdump.net). category:w11-24h2 - Browse known builds (I suggest the latest AMD64 build.)

Mount the ISO. (Double click on it). It'll appear as a (virtual) DVD.

Open that.

Run Setup.

After a couple of windows, choose to keep files and applications. (You may have to eventually re-install some apps, but it's rare, in my experience.)

After the upgrade is complete, run Windows Update. It may run the KB update for that version.

I suggest that you run sfc /scannow from a command line window with admin privileges. It may find and fix some system file issues.

You'll have a windows.old folder that would permit you to revert to 23H2. It can be removed using the disk cleanup utility.

I wouldn't be afraid of installing it. On the other hand, it's mostly pointless, unless you could benefit from one or more of its new features.

Your assumption is correct. Release preview builds are identical, or nearly identical to the public releases that 'usually' follow them. The only significant difference being they're typically available to insiders a couple weeks before the general public.

On my own PCs I currently stick to running public and release preview builds only, as they generally offer the best stability, and least amount of issues. - I've tested and used several beta and dev builds, and prefer to save myself the headache that usually comes with them! - for now at least

If your computer is Windows 11 compliant (no hacks needed), just download the ISO, mount it (Open with File Explorer) and run Setup. If you have an unsupported computer, then download the ISO and either create a patched USB flash drive with Rufus and run Setup from there, or mount the ISO but then you have to replace a hidden file from Setup cache, see relevant threads. In any case, if you have an unsupported computer make sure you disconnect from the internet before upgrading. When online the upgrade will fail at about 70-75% of the first stage, even if you bypass compatibility check and lets you start upgrading. I have confirmed it with at least 10 unsupported computers. So stay offline. This is because of a hidden online compatibility check forcing the upgrade to fail or because of Windows Update messing with system files or your working drivers, even if you have selected not to use Windows Update during installation. I don't care why it fails, I just disconnect from the internet to make it succeed. I only re-connect to the internet after I confirm in Settings->System->Info I have successfully upgraded to the new version.

Legacy BIOS installation warning: I have read in another thread that they replaced the bootloader and the new 24H2 version only supports UEFI boot. All of us with a 23H2 Legacy BIOS installation have to also replace the bootloader with the 23H2 version to boot into Windows after the upgrade. If you are running an UEFI installation, then you should be fine.

I really cannot see benefit any more of using a legacy bios installation other than saving a small 16MB partition. You can turn off secure boot permanently or temporarily if required.

At one time you could only install as legacy bios for a "Windows To Go" usb flash drive that did not have have the hard disk parameter set, as windows would only allow 1 partition would only allow one partition.

That restriction has long gone.

It is surprising how many software tools still object e.g. minitool partition wizard objects if you create a 2nd partition saying it is not windows compatible. However, it does not stop you creating one fortunately.

With UEFI, all partitions can be primary and no need for flakey logical partitions any more.

I gave up using legacy bios installations years ago.

For small SSDs such as 120GB any MB you save makes sense. I have long replaced it with first a 480GB SSD and now a 1TB one, but I just cloned my old disk. I didn't want to go through the ordeal called clean installation.

I tried the upgrade process as you suggested but it is not working for me. The version i am currently running is 23H2 OS Build 22631.4112 and the uup dump file i downlaoded is 26100.1591_amd64_en-us_professional_df9477d8_convert

Click on learn more to find out which driver causes it. Myself could not update from Windows 10 1809 to 1903 because of mixed versions of nVidia graphics drivers. Simply downloading the latest driver and installing it would not work because the older files would not be replaced. The solution was to use DDU to complete remove all graphics drivers and install the latest version.

Are you a Gamer? The last time the error "your pc has a driver or sevice that isn't ready for this version of windows" was commonly seen was in Windows 10 on PC's with Battle Eye anti-cheat software.

yes, i am a gamer and I do not have battle eye installed. I actually googled my error and that same page that you posted came out but it didn't help as i do not have said software installed

It would be nice if microsoft would make the effort to actually tell its users what driver/software is actually causing the problems. It jsut gives a generic error message that tells you nothing. I guess I will try to unplug every USB device I have connected and see if that works. I will report back tomorrow, as it is getting late. Thank you in the meantime @Bree

One fix I read (not true) was to be patient and wait until Microsoft releases 24H2 publicly. <— No brainer/sarcasm/common sense.

I contemplated this (I didn’t) and thought; “Yeah I should probably do that because there is every chance the release is going to be slightly if not obviously different to the state I installed it as… and will have to start all over again because of that nagging feeling”

In that case you have to do it "old school". That is remove all external devices and even disable in BIOS or Device Manager every other device not necessary for the upgrade. These are audio, USB 3.0 or higher, any TV tuner or video capture card, card reader and others. If you can remove all expansion cards (PCIe cards) even better. Also I would disable all startup applications and third-party antivirus or anti malware. Let the upgrade complete successfully and then enable reconnect all.

If that doesn't help, I would download the ISO, disconnect from the internet and do the upgrade offline to prevent Windows Update affecting it.
