Slightly off topic, but I was wondering if a smartphone would recognise a micro SD card with anything on it that had been loaded from a pc?

Depends what's on the card.
As long as you have an app on the phone that will support each file type, you're good.

For instance..., if you have a bunch of .epub files on the card but no ebook reader on the phone, then the .epub files are useless.

I think you need to let the phone format the card first and then you can drag and drop files where you need them.

If you left the micro sdcard with its original format you can put files on it from a PC by inserting the card into the sdcard slot on the computer. Or you can put the card into the phone and connect the phone to the PC with a USB cable and copy from the PC to the card on the phone. If you format the card in the phone then you will likely need some kind of blue tooth file copy method.

I would not format the card in the phone unless desperate to expand the phone storage. At least with Android phones these days you can get 128GB of storage in a phone costing less than $300.

As example I had a 32GB card in an old phone with 16GB of music files on it. I just put the card in the tray of the new phone and everything was recognized since the card was left in FAT32 format. If you look in your phone specs it will usually state the largest micro sdcard it can recognize.

I am getting a Samsung Galaxy A14 5G, A middle for diddle phone with 4Gb ram and 64Gb built in which can accept up to a 1Tb card. I have a 128Gb card on order. I will have to watch my usage an the best deal I could get only includes 3Gb per month. I won't be watching movies or youtube on it, but would like to store maps and pictures mostly. Both of my old phones are limited to 3G which is being shut down.

I have OnePlus Nord. If your phone acts like mine it will ask to format the card when it detects it. I advise saying no to the format. That way you can put that card in any Android phone that can handle that capacity later. My phone has 128GB of storage. I have had it 2 years and haven't gone over 17GB used yet. The 16GB of music files is on the card.

I have a Google Pixel 7 Pro with 128GB storage. I've copied files back and forth from my phone to my Dell XPS 15 computer many times.

I use a short 6 inch cable that was supplied with one of my Samsung T7 portable SSD drives. It has male type C connectors at both ends. I connect to one of the Thunderbolt 4 type C connectors on my PC.

Using Windows File Explorer on my PC, file transfers work perfectly.

I'm glad to hear so many positive solutions, the only thing that the phone won't have when it arrives tomorrow is one of the fast chargers, so I will have to be patient and wait at least a day charging it on an older charger. I forgot to order a charger at the same time as the phone.

The last time I fitted a MicroSD card inside a phone [2021/2022], it asked if I wanted to

format the card for use only within the phone, or
not format the phone so that it can be swapped between the phone & a computer and be readable in both.

I do not have one fitted at the moment.
But I do connect a 512GB MicroSD card [inside a USB adapter] that I've formatted in the computer as Fat32*** and my explorers on the phone can read & write without any problem+++.
*** Formatted by MiniTool partiiton wizard because Windows itself refuses to format large {>32GB} disks as Fat32 even though it is perfectly happy to work with the results.
+++ When I tried to connect an NTFS MicroSD card, I found that 'normal' explorers on Androids could not read it. I did play around with add-ons years earlier but now believe using Fat32 is much better.

Most of the time I charge my phone using one of the type C ports on my computer. There is no need for a fast charger if you do that as there is more power available on the type C port than on a typical fast wall wart charger. My Pixel 7 Pro charges in less than an hour on my computer's type C port. Give it a try, you'll be pleasantly surprised!

Two more useful hints, my pc motherboards have the fast USB ports in their back panels, and I use Mini Tool Partition Wizard and had forgotton about the fat32 limitations.

From what battery percentage does it charge in less than an hour?

I've got a 512GB SDCard in my Galaxy A53, I never had to format anything!

Plug the phone into the PC and load 'er up with stuff!

My Pixel 7 Pro seldom if ever goes below 40% before charging. When I plug in the charging cable it's usually between 40-50%.

OK, thanks...I have a 7Pro and that would equate to my charging time from 40-50% using the Google 30W charger.

So far, the new phone is running well although the downloads from the pc on the 128Gb micro SD Samsung are not recognised, my fault, for not finding a compatible app. I have switched on the WiFi with a 24 charactor password, it should be secure enough even in this built up area with about ten signals in range. This certainly takes care of internet on the phone at home, since zero usage of my 3Gb per month allowance has been used since the WiFi turn on. All the home pcs are hardwired, which is the reason why I had not used WiFi until now. The phone recognised the card straight away without any formatting, and so did the pc. The fast charger takes 1/4 of the time my old one takes, although this Galaxy14 is said to be slower charging than many phones, possibly only 15W.
