    …still on a horse.
K..., it's come down to this:

- ShareX for fast, flawless and versatile capture and markup, 🌟🌟🌟🌟
- FastStone for more sophisticated annotation, 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
- Affinity for in-depth image manipulation. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Screenpresso is greatly sophisticated but, it's got a few glitches I can't work out. (And, the Bozo's won't accept my credit card!!!) 🤷‍♂️
Snagit is perfectly awesome but painfully slow and convoluted.

Don't stare too long at my wife!!!

Was the .jpg and .webp compressed at same quality?

For example, here's a high quality (artifacts free) .png image:

jHnZ7zU.png

2.38 MB

Here's a college with .png vs .jpg vs .webp - in a random order:

3rzxMPO.png

.png is obvious, but can you guess the other 2 - which is .jpg and which .webp? 🙃

In case not, here's the .webp (349.32 KB) vs .jpg (465.70) - both saved at 91 quality/compression:

zUYaZT0.png

Used a screenshot - in case anyone has doubts, but didn't overlay/arrange them properly - Ops! 😅
Anyway, the difference is still obvious... 🧐

Yes, highest quality from original.

I see, so 100%. At 100% .webp can't be compared to .jpg at 100% - since it goes heavier on compression (around the equivalent of 91% for .jpg) - thus, the size diff is quite huge - which obliviously reflects in terms of quality (.jpg doing a better job - but at more than 2x the .webp size). From a 2.38 MB PNG - using highest quality for compression (100) on both - .jpg achieves a size of 1.64 MB while .webp 667.9 KB. That being said... .jpg vs .webp at 100% is not a "hontest" compression. Which means .webp devs were kinda cheating - while programing the compression variables (probabbly did that - being aware "that size" is what made .jpeg so famous - despite the loss in quality). Which is kinda sad... since .webp is still supperior to .jpg if programed the honest way. And sure, the size betwen .jpg and .webp won't be that big anymore - but .webp is still capable of offering superior quality at similar compression rate. It does have a "lossless" mode - which does just that: impress with its quality - side by side vs .PNG and i couldn't see the difrence (didn't use a zoom/magnifier glass tho). Yet, as a lossess compression - from a 2.38 PNG a lossless .webp image has a size of 1.73 MB (almost the same as the .jpg - with no noticile loss in quality... same can't be said about a .jpg).

It could be any number of things to also include the shooter/editor not doing anything wrong. It could even be the snipping tool itself.

I posted a while back I wasn't impressed with the lack of color management in Snagit, and I'm still not. But for simple snips it's perfect. If I find I need to correct colors, I'll import into Photoshop and correct there. But for 95 percent of my snips nothing needs to be done.

For clarity, It's not a "Photoshop" issue, it's an image processing issue. Or that the sizing and file format has changed a few times. The image below was edited in Photoshop. No graininess or noise there. This is a jpeg file converted from a tiff file.

If by Processing you mean... Enhancing/Denoising - then yes, you can put it like that.

.jpg is not a lossless format. But it's still a "digital" image format - which can be subjected to changes/enhancements. Especially this days (well, for quite some time now - since in 2024 even A.I. has a big saying in this regard) - when every capable image editing software (Photoshop - does qualify, be it Lightroom Classic or its big brother) - has an arsenal of image auto-enhancing tools. The image is also down-scalled to 1920x1290 - which tends to heavilly diminish the noise level - compared to its original resolution of at least 4128 x 2752. And then there's the image procesing....

2024-08-05_233718.png

Not to mention you shot above image with a Nikon D850, which sure... it's a DSLR from 2017 - so a bit far from the latest and the greatest. But's it's still a full frame camera (low-noise performance - since the sensor can capture more light - compared to smaller formats) - quite capable even for 2024 and still used by some professionals. Furthermore, that image has enough light for a low ISO of 1000 to be used - so the noise level should be quite minimal. Same image shot with a phone - you'd have a lot of internal cheating/enhancing - to get same level of noise.

So, yeah... even .jpg images looks great - if the conditions in which the imake was taken (or created) - are that faborable. On the other hand - if the image was taken with a midrange smarthphone and the light was not quite ideal, the.... procesed image in Photshop - is sure to look better than the original/source. That's not to say - that Photshop is an issue, quite the oppsite - it's a solution... After all, in this day and age "fake details" - is what image processing is mainly about. Thus, an iPhone 15 with its tiny senzor - can compete even with a full frame profesional camera - due to "image processing". Well, not if it's using a Telephoto Lenses and the subject of photograhy is wildlife. Not yet - at least, cause in the near future - A.i. might be able to fake that too. Imagine someone who never took a decent photo in his life - yet, using a modern A.I. text to image generator in his browser - he might achieve better results than a profesional with 20.000$ Photo Gear. 🙃
