Still the same old problems with 24H2 . . .

Well, today MS "forced" the installation of the dreaded 24H2. I still have the same old problems of expanded folders in my navigation pane, that I had with 23H2. And I have used the eleven forum posted batch file for the registry to fix it, which didn't work in earlier versions, either. I have now gotten back a dual list of my external drives, unless I turn off "show my PC" in the options. It is so tiring to have to battle with some things that should be fixable with a simple check box in the controls (also done). Sigh! In the beginning, I naively thought computers were supposed to help us in our daily lives, but instead have become more and more complex and annoying. I wonder what new things I will grow to not like about this new update.

That doesn’t really explain what you tried. There are many batch files.
If you can’t be specific, it’s harder to help you.

So far, it's worked.

It's probably too late for you unless you manage to roll back to 23H2 and then set the GRC tool I linked to, in place.

To Antspants - Thanks. Just basically ranting here. Maybe this version is a lot less likely to get hacked, or the be corrupted. When I originally got 23H2, it fixed the problem of folder expansion, which when expanded, slows down my workflow. Then, for some unexplained reason, it went back to expanding all the folders again. Unfortunately, 24H2 didn't fix it.

To Cheaterslick - Thanks, but I want to do the fixes I need within Windows itself with simply checking or unchecking a box, which I did, to no avail. Just not sure that the programmers can't address things that worked so well in Win 10. I am even willing to go into the registry and tweak it a bit manually, if someone has the directions.

I vaguely remember you made a thread about it? I also vaguely remember me saying it's usually the other way around with people wanting to have folders expanded. Or maybe I said that in another thread.
We'll have to revisit this then.

No need for 3rd party tools. The setting has been in 11 since the beginning. My navigation pane does not expand when I open a folder. See screenshot.

Here's how:
control panel>file explorer options>"view" tab
Scroll down to "navigation pane"
uncheck "expand to open folder" and apply-OK

By disabling this option, you can prevent the navigation pane from automatically expanding to the selected folder in the right side pane, keeping your drives collapsed and organized.

I believe they have done all that. Don’t know why it’s not working for them.

I just noticed that I had the identical issue the OP has. It was with a LaCie USB external drive. I solved it by deleting two registry entries. One is that listed in the tutorial here at Elevenforum (see weblink one below). The other is also in the Registry and is for systems with 64bit architecture (a majority of modern computers) for this see the second weblink below.

Thanks. I am unclear on removing the "Key." Is that the file within the address folder, or to remove the folder itself? Should anything else be left in its place?
Also, FYI, the second link you left on your post for 64-bit architecture seems to have a virus, according to my Norton anti-virus.

See the screenshot from the Windowsreport tutorial. The key with the gobbledegook name has to be deleted from both locations.
