Accounts Switch to Local Account from Microsoft Account in Windows 11

Accounts_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to switch to a local account from a Microsoft account to sign in to Windows 11 with instead.

You can sign in to Windows 11 with a local account or a Microsoft account. However, you can easily switch between using a local account or a Microsoft account to sign in to Windows 11.

When you switch to a local account from a Microsoft account, your account will still use the same profile folder. It will not affect the name of your account's profile folder name.

Signing in to Windows 11 with a Microsoft account lets you:
  • Download apps from the Microsoft Store.
  • Get your online content in Microsoft apps automatically.
  • Sync settings online to make PCs look and feel the same - like your browser history, account picture, and color.
Signing in to Windows 11 with a local account means:
  • You have to create a user name and account for each PC you use.
  • While not recommended, you can remove the account password if you like.
  • You'll need to sign in to the Microsoft Store with a Microsoft account to download apps from the Microsoft Store.
  • Your settings won't be synced across the PCs that you use.

Here's How:

1 Open Settings (Win+I).

2 Click/tap on Accounts on the left side, and click/tap on Your info on the right side. (see screenshot below)

Switch_to_local_account_from_Microsoft_account-1.png

3 Click/tap on the Sign in with a local account instead link on the right side. (see screenshot below)

If you see a Stop signing in to all Microsoft apps automatically link instead, then it means you are already using a local account, but had selected to sign in to all apps with a Microsoft account to be used by other apps.

Clicking on the Stop signing in to all Microsoft apps automatically link will return you to just the local account.

4 Click/tap on Next to confirm. (see screenshot below)

5 Enter your Microsoft account credentials to verify. (see screenshot below)

Switch_to_local_account_from_Microsoft_account-4.png

6 Perform the following steps to set up a local account to switch to: (see screenshot below)
  • Enter a User name you want for your local account.
  • Enter a New password you want for your local account.
  • Type the new password again to Confirm password.
  • Type a Password hint you want.
  • Click/tap on Next when finished.

You can leave the password fields empty if you do not want a password for the local account. It is recommended to password protect your local account to help keep it more secure.

If you like, you can add security questions for your local account later to provide an extra layer of protection.

7 Click/tap on Sign out and finish when you are ready to switch to a local account. (see screenshot below)

8 When you sign in to Windows 11 next, you will now sign in to your local account setup at step 6.

That's it,

This was also simple.
Absolutely!
There's no reason you shouldn't be able to use the products and services you've paid for without marrying the company!

Now, if you want to sync your content or take advantage of other services, that's another story.

I think this tutorial needs changing due to what happened on my PC today: -

I followed steps 1 and 2 but on step 3 I did not see "Sign in with a local account instead". I saw "Stop signing in to all Microsoft apps automatically". I clicked on that link and it immediately created a local account and switched to it. It was that simple. Steps 1, 2 and 3 then no further steps were required. It really is a simple 'switch' operation now. How simple. Brilliant.
To switch back it looks like all I need to do is click on 'Sign in with a Microsoft account instead'. I may have to enter my Microsoft account email address and password again to switch back but I have not tested that.

I should add that this worked the same way on both my HP 'Windows Professional' machine and my DELL 'Windows Home' machine.

Hello Ken, :alien:

There's a note under step 3 to help with this.

Hi there
@Brink
Can you fix this tutorial PLEASE !!!! --- this whole thread is now confusing.

I'm testing Win11 pro for workstations rel 26227-ge-5000 and there seems no way of either switching to a local account or connecting to a Domain. The Account info screens don't exist as your tutorial has them. Just has things like rewards, basic billing, even a credit card nr (last 4 digits) used for paying for cloud storage subscription.

I primarily want to connect to a domain -- there's got to be some user reg key to allow this otherwise what's the point of W11 Pro for Workstations !!!!

I installed via a normal install process --- perhaps the rufus install might be better if the exclusions work.

Cheers

I think if one choses use for school or work then a domain can be entered. I'll check that again.

I can never get the oobe thing to work -- either I'm pressing keys at the wrong time or haven't disconnected the Internet or whatever.

As for displaying the last 4 digits of a credit card under account ------ well NO THANKS !!!!
Also at ist logon I was offered a subscription for a whole slew of games from the Ms store.

Now as W11pro for workstations is presumably designed to be used in a work environment why on earth is the user pestered with this rubbish --- W11 Home is more appropriate for that. - W11 pro for workstations also allows more cores and threads than basic W11 Pro if you have powerful machines -- that's why I want to test it.

So I'll have another go at this. But it just seems crazy that Ms is just obfuscating people for wanting to use Windows as a Work instrument rather than an all round home entertainment source -- fine for many but not everyone.

cheers

Yes, that is surprising. The last thing one would want when running a company or business, is Microsoft being a helicopter parent/overlord.

Hey Jimbo, :alien:

The workstation edition has the same features as the Pro edition with a few extras, so you should see the same as in the tutorial.

Go ahead and post some screenshots showing what you're seeing instead to see if anything may stand out. Be sure to black out any personal info before posting.

As for joining a domain, it should be the same steps as below.

Hi there

@Brink
Thanks for answering !!

I re-installed again via dism /Apply-Image to a vhdx (physical file) - but this time selected school / work computer at the initial OOBE stage-- then I got option to join a domain and it proceded as a local account and didn't prompt for a domain name either.

It seems if you chose home computer then there's no way that it lets you other than use a Ms account -- and you can't switch it later after install finishes either without a whole load of hassle into creating a new user etc etc.

If you are on a home LAN it would appear the standard way of installing and using a local account is via the domain sign in option - no prompt for domain etc is the way forward. You don't need any of the "active directory stuff" if you are on a home Lan or even a stand alone machine with bog standard ISP via domestic fibre etc.

I tested W11pro and W11 for workstations using this method and they both worked -- release 26227.5000 from UUPDUMP. Not sure whether Canary or DEV as both have the same build number !!

Screenshot 2024-06-05 141943.png

(I wanted though the workstation version as I'm testing on a nice powerful multiple physical processor machine -- Workstation and Enterprise allow more physical processors, cores and threads etc than the standard W11 Pro).

Cheers
jimbo

Hello, :-)

It applies to all editions. The steps are the same no matter which edition of Windows 11 you have installed.
hello, l am new to the community. Is there a work around to set up a local account from the very beginning of launching W11 for the first time as opppose to creating a MS account like the machine forces you to do? l am trying to find links or posts on this.

Welcome to Eleven Forum.

Yes, there is. See Step 21 in this tutorial.

ok so apparently SHIFT+F10 in step 21 isnt working. MS has blocked that popup feature. Suggestions?

You need to enter Shift-F10 much earlier. Like in Step 13. If you wait too long, OOBE starts to block Shift-F10 by design for the later screens.

as soon as I was at the country screen I did Shift F10 but it was still blocked.

Here is what I found that somewhat worked

  1. Setup Windows 11 until you get to the Microsoft Account creation screen.
  2. Press the Windows + R keys to open Run dialog, then type "ms-settings:recovery" (you might need to click around to get the Run Prompt to appear)
  3. Select Reboot Now on Advanced Startup option. The unit will reboot to recovery mode.
  4. Navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart. This gives us access to the advanced options during restart.
  5. Once the Advanced Options appear, select option 7 - Disable Driver Signature Enforcement. The unit will reboot back into OOBE with the ability to use CMD

Now that worked to get CMD from SHIFT +F10. I was then able to do the OOBE\BYPASSNRO. It said it was processed successfully. It then reboots but when it lands on the country page after booting, I am locked out of SHIFT F10 again. I was trying to release the ip so that I could proceed to "not having internet" and setting up the local account. Man this is frustrating.

Honestly, there's something wrong with your Windows. I've done literally hundreds of test installs, both automated and manual. And for testing, I will open a CMD window to debug.

If you have to disable Driver Signature Enforcement to make it work, that implies you have hacked executables somewhere. Driver Signature Enforcement doesn't allow any modified executables to be in the boot sequence, since hacking the original file breaks the MS digital signature.

The thing you need to do is disconnect from the internet before using oobe\bypassnro. If you connect via ethernet, just unplug the cable. If you use WiFi, do not use the wifi password to connect. Then after oobe\bypassnro restarts the PC, when you get to the 'let's connect you...' screen there will be an option to continue without internet.

When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

The laptop came in brand new from hp. I would hope it doesn't have anything in there like that. I'm in the middle of a factory reset right now.

It's brand new out of the box. I never connected to the internet. However I do see that the Wi-Fi is enabled because it locates anything within range. Would you suggest that I do an IP release before I do the Kobe bypass?

If you have WiFi then it will not connect to your network automatically, you'd have to type the WiFi password. You will see this screen asking you to connect before you can continue with the setup, with no option to bypass it. At this point use oobe/bypassnro.

The PC will reboot, and when you next see that screen it has an additional 'I don't have internet' option. Click on it and you can continue with what MS call 'limited setup' and can create a local account.
