I chatted with several Dell support techs and asked where I could buy two tiny screws for the SSD head sink. After a few chats then one is sending me two of them free! I am not a Dell hater any longer. :zany: BTW, it still works.

Weird; my new Dell auto signs me in without a PIN, but the older one wants a PIN. I see a PASSWORD and remember both, but I do not want the sign-in PIN or PASSWORD. I know this is OT, but yawl seem like you all like to hand out good advice. It seems overly complicated, so how do I correct my older Dell sign-in?

Yes, I am keeping this taped up hinge broker laptop because it works great otherwise, and I am still not overly confident with the new one.

As I recall, when setting up my new Dell last month, it defaulted to setting up Windows Hello Face Recognition. I open the lid, and my PC simply recognizes me and I'm ready to work. Is that what's happening for you?

No, I was using a PIN with this older Dell and it does not have a fingerprint reader. The new one does and I used that for a while, but changed to a pin-less, password-less bootup. The problems I forgot how to do it, so I can change the old Dell. Getting old and forgetful. When I sent the defective SSD back to Dell I changed my security stuff so they would not find it. It was time to changes all the stuff anyway.

Well, I tried several methods to remove the PIN and/or PASSWORD to sign-in Windows and none worked. I guess I'll just keep the PIN idea until my brain connects with this planet.

Well, I am getting too old for this stuff. When looking at the reg method to "Enable or Disable Automatically Sign in Account at Startup in Registry Editor" I forgot to add my password in "DefaultPassword." Not sure it is age or just being dumb. After I added the password it worked like a charm. How I made it this far is beyond me.

Anyway, I remembered I have two Topmate Laptop coolers stored away so I am using one with the new Dell and the laptop is a lot cooler now. Will test it for a while and report back.

It's good to hear that your new laptop is working again. I have one of those laptop stands that has two USB powered fans. I bought it because I'm using my laptop outside in a shed. There is no air conditioner so I'm stuck with whatever the outside temps are. To keep me cool I have a small 120V fan. With my setup, I over heat way sooner than my laptop. When it's extremely hot I stay in the house and use one of my desktops. If you're in a temp controlled room I have to ask, do you really need to use the Topmate cooler?

That will require TPM 2.0 security chip, 12 to 16 mg of ram as for the $649.00 that's doe able I have a Dell Inspiron 16-7640 2in one that normally sells for $1149.00 I got for $749.00. Go to Best Buy every week they have powerful Dells at the price point you want. Call or go to one of their stores bring someone with you, you trust. Tell what you need and want to pay they can guide you on what to buy. If you pay one get extended warrantee, they have people there to guide you, I bought a plan they call total Care glad I did. I stopped using my laptop in my lap. After a while the heat from the laptop felt like it was cooking my legs. I do have a cooling tray but even that bothered my legs.

When it is setup to Hibernate with the led down the power t the USB goes off, but in sleep mode the USB is still powered up and cooler runs. Guess I'll have to spend time changing something. Tired of fussing with these laptops. I have more to do!

The setting to turn off the power to the USB port is in The BIOS. I had to turn it off on my HP laptop.

I've been using a cutting board to place my laptop on. Easy on the lap and giving the machine elevated space. The trick for me was finding the thinnest one around, most of these are too thick. Walking around Publix aisles I spotted the best one yet. Under five bucks; I couldn't see spending serious money on a laptop cooler. :-)

I never though about using a thin cutting board. Was a thin plastic board?

I had bought a thin white plastic cutting board but didn't like the indentation (a kind of cutout channel around the edge) all around the inside edge. But my wife is using that one for her laptop. The board I bought from Publix is a tad thicker than I'd like but it is wood (or a faux wood) material and it insulates the heat from my legs.
