Thinking About a New Dell for My Birthday

@jeffbeish, I see your birthday comes 2 days after mine. Sorry your already having problems with your new Dell laptop. Did Dell say that the warranty would still be good if you take the bottom off to replace the drive? I think I would have asked for a replacement.
Yes, warranty will still be good. I asked if Win-11 would be installed and yes it is. If not I would have asked for a tech to show up. Maybe you are right that I should have asked for a complete replacement, but their lawyers agreement tells a different story The purchase agreement is longer that the user's manual.

When it comes to legalese I'm totally lost.

Well, Dell is still trying to find my part(s). Not sure how many parts since it is just a chip. I guess in my old age I have lost it, Dell is off my like list.

Sounds like they're giving you the runaround. If they really cared they would replace your laptop. I think more and more companies could care less about the customers.

I emailed the chat tach and asked why they didn't send me a replacement laptop instead of the delay in finding a SSD chip. We'll see what they say.

I hope Dell does the right thing and replaces your laptop. Positive reviews from happy customers is the best form of advertising any company can get.

I have as well, but this is the second time a laptop broke with the first problem to was in warrantee, so they sent a tech out to fix the hinge problem. :-) A year later it broke again so I taped the screen up to open and I am using it now. So, my son talked me into spending more bucks for one like his, so I did. Mine is a 16" 5640. So, when the SSD crashed, I thought they would have parts on hand, but not so. I don't blame them so much, just the system and "Made in China." If it is just replacing the SSD chip I can do it easily, so if I find that I am too old I'll ask for their local tech to come out.

I have been in electronics for 65 years and two degrees EE and Computer Science, but the best education was fixing them for all those years. Working on then and messing up is great learning. Learning by mistakes. Hopefully it is just the SSD chip and the chat tech told me if not he would send a new laptop. I am not in the mood to make too much out of it with Dell since they have been a good service and computer for me since they started up. Hey, I also liked eMachine too. I like computers, especially main frame s that cost millions. Was fun back in the day. :p

Parts out for delivery, so if they sent the hard drive as an add-a-boy then I'll set it up as a partition and use it as a backup system. Of I'l just look at it with affection. :D

Well, it is working again. Was an easy replacement. While setting it up I managed to take the Documents folder off of Desktop; it was OneDrive fooled me and I deleted the wrong thing. How to I put Documents back. The folder is still in C:\Users\<owner>\Documents. It look like a regular folder, so something is wrong and I don't remember why.

Think there are any laptops out there that will run this long?
I bought a new Inspiron 1545 in 2010 that ran 24/7 until 2021 when I replaced it with a refurb desktop. It was used as my main machine (it came with a T4400 CPU and 4 GB of RAM) and I also used it to run Plex/Kodi as my media server.

I chose Dell because Dell was linux friendly and that is all the 1545 would ever run (and still does run, albeit a little slow). If I would ever buy a laptop again, I would probably choose Dell.

I'm glad that you have your new laptop back up and running again.
I just hope it stays working. Nearly messed up the heat sync holder for the SSD due to silver solder and tiny screws. I have some tiny screwdrivers too. They want the failed SSD back so the OS is coded for my fingerprints, but I will change passwords and codes anyway. it's about time to do so anyway. I still use the taped up 3510 too and after the new one proves worthy I'll replkace the hinges on the 3510. I watched a video of someone adjusting the hinge nuts to make the screen stay up easier to open.
I'm glad that you have your new laptop back up and running again.
I just hope it stays working.

Well, I was using my new Dell this evening and it stopped working and will not boot up. I got it in the BIOS mode and ran tests, but nothing fixed it or indicated what the problem is. Then it wanted my 48-digit recovery number or bitlocker number (do not have it) but then if the SSD was replaced it has all new tags and secret codes. I started a chat with Dell but was told it was too late, call back tomorrow. Guess Dell is not on my happy list.

It broke last week with the blue screen and they sent me a new SSD that I replaced it. SSD still works good enough to enter BIOS mode and do diagnostics. but without all the codes I up the creek. I thought my original codes were still good.

@jeffbeish, did you check your Microsoft account for your BitLocker recovery key?

Well, I was fed up, so I just went to bed. I attempted to boot up this morning and put it in setup mode, put it into factory defaults and it just will not start up. Guess I'll call Dell again. Lot that will do.

It is not loading the defaults for even a simple boot.
