Hum, yesterday I shutdown my new laptop and we went out for dinner. All was well and the new Dell was working great until I got home and turned it on. Hum, blue screen with an error code that the drive config file as kaput. So, after a chat Dell is sending me a replacement SSD.. Very rare for one of thsoe going bad, especially when the laptop is brand new.

That’s fair if you’re happy with the outcome. But in the case that it may be a bad sign, I’d of personally requested a new Dell altogether.

That may be the next step. China Dells are not what I expected. I hope they put my Windows 11 on it. After retiring form 42 years working in computers replacing it is no problem so that's why I chose to do it without their help.

I suppose you'll have to pry off the laptop's back to replace the SSD. I miss the days of thick/heavy laptops (as opposed to thin/light) that had easily removed covers to access the drives and RAM.

bobkn, Yes, after all those screws. Good thing is the chat tech assures me windows 11 will be on the replacement chip. It is about the size of a typical SanDisk. I have several of them, one where I store images and videos in a 128-Gb disk. Wow, the make stuff small these days. The tech asked if I wanted a Dell tech to do it and I remined him that I worked computers as a tech and engineer for 43 years, then privately for another 20-some years, so it will be easy.​

It's going slow learning how to use it. GnuCash is complex. All I really need is to look at the bank statements or a simple leger to keep track of my accounts and not have to go on-line to see it. I usually download the PDF files and study them later. Weird that Quicken 2017 works on the Dell with 15" screen, but not the 16" screen. I know it is associated with the resolution and such, but I have tried several modes and it still will not work. To get this older Dell to allow Quicken to install and work I moved Local/ Intuit to Roaming/Intuit and that fixed it, but the new one will not fix.

Yeah, I usually buy middle ground. Not the cheapest but not the most expensive, either.

And now with ram being soldered on to motherboards, you're almost required to pay more in order to stay ahead of the game. It's a great way to rip off people by preventing future proofing.

I guess I was falling on deaf ears when I suggested to give Moneydance a try. Oh well, I wish you all the best luck with GnuCash.

Winuser, $65 is more than I want to pay for a simple ledger program. If I needed more then I would certainly buy it. I really do not need a complex program because my bank issues nice statements and their web page is great. All I want is something like Excel to look at the account results.

I guess Dell uses cheap labor these days. They are sending me a replacement SSD with Win-11 installed, and I chose to replace it myself. Not a big job. I suspect the SSD is not securely in the connector, but maybe not. Usual electronics problems are either dirty connections or smoked components. Since no smoky smells then it may be something simple. Eiter way I am not happy with them.

I can see you not wanting to pay $65.00. IMO, the fact that it is a lifetime license makes it a good deal. As I remember, when I switched from Quicken to Moneydance, the learning curve was easy. If someday you decide you want to try it, it allows you to manually enter up to 100 entries before it stops working.

When I switched back to Windows ( Windows 7 made me a Windows user again) I was going to go back to using Quicken. When I found out they went to a yearly subscription I decided it wasn't worth it.

SSDs (or what's known as storage) can still be swapped out in most machines.

RAM (or what's known as memory), on the other hand, is turning into a different story.

looking at the laptops in Walmart, I see a lot of the cheap ones come with 32GB eMMC drives. Something I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.

@jeffbeish, I see your birthday comes 2 days after mine. Sorry your already having problems with your new Dell laptop. Did Dell say that the warranty would still be good if you take the bottom off to replace the drive? I think I would have asked for a replacement.
