If you start on 23H2, is it possible to update to 24H2 once it's more stable/tested, or would that require a fresh install? Sorry for the questions, still working out the details on whether or not I'd like to commit. Thnx for the patience. It's really a shame that dude doesn't run a thread here to field questions such as these. 🤷‍♂️

No. Each major update needs a fresh install. But you could keep all your documents, photos etc on a second partition. And portable applications.

Libre has a portable version of its office suite.
Revo uninstaller has a portable version.
So does Everything.
Disk Genius will run perfectly from a separate disk or partition.
Macrium Reflect can be installed on a separate disk or partition.

I have only made one fresh install nearly ten years when a laptop failed and I did not know (then) how to redeploy OS to new device.

I maintain my Windows carefully and have never experienced performance losses.

Having to clean install each major upgrade is a deal breaker for me i.e. absolutely no use to me.

What a shame. There is nothing better than a Clean Install, of any OS.
I keep all my data files and specialty programs on a separate drive, for safety, and all my favorite programs on a 32GB Flash Drive (several FD's, actually), so a nice fresh, Clean install is no problem at all. That makes my hobby of OS testing a lot more run, and relatively Easy. And keeps me out of pool halls and other places that I really shouldn't go.

AND, now that I've given up my old "One Dish, one Satellite" Hughes.net internet connection for the "Multi Satellite" STAR LINK system, I can do my downloads twice as fast. Even my email uploads in just one second, where every SEND used to take several seconds. And then there was that dang Data Cap with Hughes, where I have NO Data Cap with Star Link at all.
I like fast cars, fast motorcycles and FAST Internet. :lmao: Fast women? Not so much!

In spite of that, I still have several older computers, that will only accept 32 bit OS's. Windows 10/Pro/32, from X-lite is a good OS for those.
Win-10 and Win-11 are so much alike, and since I set them both up the same, it's hard to tell them apart. And Win-10/Pro/32 is a really good OS for those older PC's that just can't run Windows 11. (which requires a 64 bit system, to run) And then there's that annoying requirement for any CPU to have that SSE4.2 Instruction Set, in order to run Windows 24H2. But fortunately, both of my BIG Desktop PC's do qualify for 24H2.
And I even had one Laptop, that I had refurbished from a Basket Case, that would run 24H2, but I gave it away to a "Friend in need".

For all you guys in the USA, Happy Labor Day!

Aren't there lots of programs that need registry keys to work properly, meaning they can't be totally installed on a different drive or partition? Any registry settings would be lost on a fresh install?

I wish there was a tiny MS office or and xlite version. I personally ONLY need MS Word. But even when I make a selective install with a script all the package get installed and then it only shows me Word. Dose anyone here know a method to install MS Word separately?

You could use Libre Office which cam read and save in Microsoft format, or you could subscribe to Office 65 and work 'in the cloud'.
I have two partitions and put portable apps on the second partition. This makes updating X-Lite absolutely painless as I don't need to reinstall any apps.

I think someone misinterpreted what I said about a Clean Install.

Since I keep all my favorite programs on a Flash Drive, with their Lic. keys, etc. re-installing my programs after I CLEAN install the OS is only a few minutes job. And some I will only install "As Needed". SO, they are all REGISTERED in the system registry, of every install of the OS.
I'm not sure, why you would think otherwise. I've been doing this stuff for 40+ years!

I even set up one SSD, on this PC, with Windows 10/Pro/32, so I could run a 35 yr old Mah Jongg game. It's an old 16 bit DOS game, and will not even install on anything approaching a 64 bit OS. Now, on that SSD, there is no Word Processor, NO Browser, and the internet is Shut OFF.
And considering where I got that Win-10/32, there is NO Bloatware or MS BS either!

I selectively boot in there, using the F12 key on my PC, play my game, and then hit the RE-Boot icon in the Quick Launch Toolbar, and re-boot back into my normal, everyday, default OS. (Windows 11, Optimum 24H2, V4.2)
It's all quick, simple and totally painless. One might even say, "it's streamlined".

Happy Labor Day, Y'all.

My Computer

So as y'all know, I've been struggling with whether or not these X-Lite builds are "safe" for a daily driver. I'd LOVE to hear a couple more opinions/recommendations. I'm a "fairly competent" user, mostly using my rig for gaming. I bank on this rig, pay my mortgage, all those types of things. I don't keep a lot of important documents or pictures. Pretty set in my ways as far as sites I use, so not to concerned with security beyond Defender.

What I do like is the "lite" feeling and seemingly easy update process of just grabbing the latest pack, installing, and moving on. I like the small tweaks to context menu and StartAllBack. Again, I guess my concerns revolve around "stuff I've read on the internet", not to mention it's new to me to update Windows with the packs, rather than using Windows Update. (I'm really fine either way).

I enjoy hearing more seasoned opinions and wouldn't mind some piece of mind knowing that the X-Lite builds ARE actually safe to use and that I should have no worries doing so. If the piece of mind isn't actually there tho, I'd love to hear that too. Thnx in advance, and I love reading everyone's insight!

Windows Update and the Update Packs on the X-Lite website do different things.

I'm running Defender and a third party AV. It's just as secure as regular Windows.

Yes. I see no difference between the MS build and X-Lite as way of security is concerned. Just because it's lite doesn't mean it's insecure. Besides, if you're worried about banking, that's your browser anyway, not the OS right? It's my primary OS and been running it since it came out. No problemos.

I can't be sure, except that Windows Updates are more frequent. On the X-Lite website it suggests leaving 'Windows Updates' paused until year 3,000 (the default setting) and usinf 'Update Packs' to keep your OS upto date. The update packs probably wouldn't offer any driver updates. And Defender won't get definition updates.

I'm on 24H2 Optimum version 4.2. When version 4.3 comes out, I will have to reinstall Windows. But all my programs are portable versions on a separate partition, so I can just leave them alone.

I've always wondered about resuming updates on these X=Lite builds. They say to keep it off but then how do you get the drivers that you need if you don't enable it? Or do you enable it and then pause after?

I just run Windows Update on auto and it has not reinstalled anything that X-Lite stripped out. I'm very happy to see the back of Edge as it was reinstalling every week. I don't hate Edge, I just prefer Brave.
