Just plugged in my Seagate Portable Drive 2T 2N1AP5-500 which I use to routinely backup my PC [Lenovo ThinKCentre M720s Type 10ST]. I here the "alert" sound when something is plugged in and the drive light comes on and I can hear it working if I hold it close. Tried it on my other PC & it works. Recently, when trying to add Bluetooth function to this PC and updating drivers, I got a Windows update error [Install error - 0x800700b7] and followed the steps I found online to correct it. As far as I know everything is up to date, but maybe not. Never could get this PC to recognize the Bluetooth speakers as anything other than a "device" so gave up on that but now I've hit a brick wall just trying to do a basic backup. Are there any drivers I should update?

Have you checked Disk Management to see if it shows there? If it does assure it has a drive letter assigned so File Explorer can see it/use it. Sometimes a problem exists if using a different USB port.

It does not show in Disk Management or Device Manager.

It might be worth downloading and installing the free version of MiniTool Partition Wizard. I've had partitions on drives not show up in Disk Management but shown in Partition Wizard. Very simple to assign a drive letter too. And also, it's just a fantastic app to have lying around anyway.

Checked Settings for Windows updates and there were some so updated and restarted and still cannot find drive. I've tried numerous usb slots and an old Passport portable drive shows up when plugged in. For some reason the Seagate doesn't.

Brilliant. Just assign it a drive letter.

EDIT: Just right-click on the drive and choose "Change Letter".

I tried changing the drive letter on my other PC earlier, in hopes that would make a difference. Is that is what this does? Or, since I am doing it on the PC where it is not being recognized, it may work in this case?

Yes. In your screenshot I can see that your MyRESQUE drive isn't assigned a drive letter. If you give it one that should clear up the problem.

Just click Apply bottom left and Bob's your uncle.

Bummer. Indeed the device has no drive letter BUT despite changing it in MiniTool .... looks hopeful at this point ... when I click apply is reverts to having no drive letter!

Mark your Partition as Active or Inactive in Windows (4 Ways)

It might have something to do with the disk being set as active. It should show up as none, like in my screenshot. Have a look at the above article, it may mean a deep dive into DiskPart :eek1:

Caution is in order, diskpart is very powerful and doesn't care about your problems.

Since the drive works and had been recognized on this PC prior to the Win Update error, can you guess from what the following what might have been changed. Seems it would not have just singled out the Seagate drive but my feeble brain knows and understand too little to rule anything out. What I did to clear the error:
This problem is usually related to a Windows Update inconsistency, resetting the Windows Update components will force the Windows Update to download the update files again and should fix this problem.

Step 1: Check if doesn't have any corrupt files on the windows.
1-Right-Click on Start then click on Windows Terminal (admin)
2- Type these commands.
sfc /scannow (and press Enter)
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth (and press Enter)
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth (and press Enter)

3- The DISM tool will report whether the image is healthy, repairable, or non-repairable. If the image is repairable, you can use the /RestoreHealth argument to repair the image.
4-Type this command and press Enter:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Step 2: Reset Windows Update components
1-Right-Click on Start then click on Windows Terminal(admin)
2-Type these commands:
net stop wuauserv (and press Enter)
net stop cryptSvc (and press Enter)
net stop bits (and press Enter)
ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old (and press Enter)
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old (and press Enter)
net start wuauserv (and press Enter)
net start cryptSvc (and press Enter)
net start bits (and press Enter)
netsh winsock reset (and press Enter)
3-Reboot your PC

Yes. Actually thought it might be dead until I checked it on the other PC. So a routine backup has ended up taking a whole day to troubleshoot. Thanks for keeping me company, anyway! Have looked at Seagate's troubleshooting and end up at the same dead end. The drive is there but cannot be assigned a drive letter. Mind boggling. I always try to buy the highly rated, most trusted and darned if I don't seem to fail just after the warranty expires every time. And these things are babied and kept safe. Feeling cursed.
