I have a SurfacePro4 which upgraded to Windows 11 from Win10 several years ago, and has had no problems updating Win11 until 24H2. I've tried several times to run the upgrade both from within Windows via Settings/Update and via Media Creation Tool, but both methods fail to complete the instalation and revert to 23H2.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi, Ken.
In my opinion; Before any need to be running any diagnostics, please be aware:

You can’t upgrade upgrade to 24H2 on an unsupported machine using those two methods.

  1. Download the ISO from Microsoft
  2. Create the install media using Rufus 4.6
  3. Start Windows
  4. Go to File explorer
  5. Run Setup exe as admin from the USB
  • During the install process; If you are asked if you want to download any updates during the install, say “NO”

So the likelyhood diagnostics are needed, is unlikely. But if the install process fails yet again using the method I presented you, diagnostics may be needed.

If you want the latest ISO available, use Option One in the tutorial.
But don’t tell Media Creation Tool to create the USB
Tell Media Creation Tool to create an ISO
Then use that ISO to created the Rufus install media

Antspants, seems like you're saying that the hardware requirements have changed for 24H2. I've been running Windows 11 for several years.

Well yes, they have changed with 24H2. Hence the method I gave you. But still you can not update to 24H2 using the methods you posted in post one. It’s a simple fix, creating the install media with Rufus.

Simply, 24H2 requires you to have TPM 2.
This is a simple fix, create the install media with RUFUS
24H2 also requires you to have a CPU supporting SSE4.2. This cannot be bypassed, no matter what you try
But I believe your CPU supports SSE4.2

If you want to scramble through a thread about the changes, there is one here:

However, if you have SSE4.2, the only thing you need to worry about now is allowing RUFUS to bypass TPM2
