Solved unallotted drive ?

I was installing Windows 24H2 today and accidently sellect my D: drive and unallotted it . As soon as I clicked on it I realized what I had done and stopped the install. I held the power buton to shut off the computer. I then disconnected the drive and proceeded with the install. Now it shows as unallotted in disk management. Can the drive be brought back without having to format it? If not in Windows can it be done in Linux. If not It's not a big deal because I do have the important files saved. I would like to recover the other files if possible.

a live linux usb should be able to recover data from the drive.
as long as it can see the drive once it is connected.

You will have to do a deep scan of the drive to recover the files. There's no quick alternative because the drive have been formatted already. Not sure what data recovery software you have access to but that is the only way. I am personally using MiniTool Power Data Recovery software. Saved me 5x already.

There is a way to undelete partition with TestDisk, but i'm not sure it will recover files within a deleted partition.

If it was formatted, it's the fastest I've ever seen a drive get formatted. As soon as I click on it I immediately hit the power button. I do have the MiniTool Power Data Recovery software. I'll give it a try tomorrow. Right now OneDrive is updating my computer. I moved the OneDrive folder to the D: drive so all of my documents and pictures are downloading.

I have linux mint installed in a VMware VM. If I find I can't do it in Widows I'll remove the drive and connect it to the laptop.

I never used TestDisk so I will definitely need a step by step guide if I have to go that route.

Diskpart Clean is basically instant. If that is what was used.

Aomei Partition assistant pro recovered a lost partition, which had images, for me. There's a trial period for the pro version which may work but I used the paid version.

I don't know if I'll be able to recover anything or not but I'm going to try the suggestions. If not the files I lost aren't that important and is why I don't have any recent backups of my D: drive. The real important files (Documents and Photos) are on being downloaded from OneDrive.

I had the important files on OneDrive so at least I didn't lose them. The rest are just files I would like to get back if possible. If not, no big lose. They were just miscellaneous files. That's why I never took the time and effort to back them up.

I had to stop working on my computer so I shut it off. When I came back and restarted the computer the drive no longer shows in Disk Management. I checked in Windows Canary and Windows 24H2. I checked and all the connections they were Ok but it still didn't show in Disk Management. I tried my USB to Sata adapter and it's working. As of right now I'm running the Partition Recovery in Mini Tool Partition Wizard. I Totally forgot it could do partition recoveries. If that doesn't work, my next step is to try MiniTool Power Data Recovery as suggested by @badrobot. If I still can't recover the data I'll try the other suggestions.

Partition Wizard worked. All my files are back. Because the drive wasn't being seen before I'm Copying the files to another drive. I don't wan to lose them again. when finished I'll reconnect the drive to the computer and see if I can get the computer to recognize it. It's going to be awhile though. The copy speeds are fluctuating between 25 and 45 MB/s. File Explore is showing 2 hours and 40 minutes.

Actually I do have the licensed version of Aomei. I also have a licensed verson of MiniTool Partition Wizard. Sadly I have to admit that I didn't remember that the two programs could do a partition recovery. It's not because my 69 year old mind is getting forgetful, it's because I never needed to recover a partition before so I didn't give it any attention. On the bright side, Mini Tool Partition Wizard worked.

Testdisk is good software i use myself.

I'm glad you got your files back

If you have an empty disk laying around.. i would take that one as a practise disk and try out different recovery tools... on deleted files.. deleted partitions.. and even formatted partitions.
It is a good knowledge to have.. even we dont often mess up, we still do from time to time.. tired, distracted.. and a split second and something goes sideways.

I often use shift delete and on some disks i have even inactivated trashcan so it always delete permanently..
So i have used recovery to undo a lot of mistaken deleted files over the years. *lol*

Yes - I own both of them and both work well in recovering partitions.

I am going to install TestDisk as an extra recovery program if needed. On my main computer I'm running the Canary builds so I make backup images almost weekly. On my Second desktop, even though it's running the Canary builds I only do occasional backups. There's no important programs or files I have to worry about. To stat from a clean install would take a few hours at the most. Getting back to the D: drive on my main computer, The important files are on on OneDrive and I also have a backup of them. The other files are not important so if they did get lost I wouldn't have anything to lose. It just that I made a mistake and wanted to recover from it. Thinking about it, it was more of a challenge then a necessity. Not really knowing for sure, I was thinking that because I stopped the install when I did that the drive was just marked as unallotted and nothing actually got deleted.
