Unwanted Insider update

After a new build upgrade (keeping only the NMVE / SSD drives and GPU) I mistakenly allowed MS update to apply Windows 11 Insider Preview 10.0.26120.2213 (ge_release_upr, not sure why it appeared since I had 24H2 and have been wait listed to remove Insider updates for a while now.

Anyway, in my enthusiasm for a new build, I also deleted my previous Macrium backups.
I dared to use an Intel Core Ultra 7-265K, (system1) so I’m not sure whether the occasional delay or freeze is generated by the CPU or the insider SW,
I don’t want to initiate a complete new W11 install, so my ask is:

What is the best procedure to allow the “official” W11 version to catch up with my current insider version?
just wait until the official version catches up - how to identify that?
This will I hope will end my insider participation.

Interesting that feature updates doesn’t show my move to 23H2.
I assume it’s best to leave the standard early update function off or are they not related to insider updates.

26100.2133 presumably?
Note RP is on 2454, and rtm on 2133 now.

Leaving the Release Preview build which gets updates ahead of the release version is much harder than it sounds.

You can select to unenroll to leave it at the next major release but as 24H2 has now been released, you now have to wait until 25H2 is released.
Alternatively, you have to clean install.

In simple terms, the RP major build number has to be less than the official build (26100) to leave with all apps installed (once new release version is issued).

I have no idea why MS do not let you leave RP if on 26100.2454 once official release reaches or over takes .2454.

I do not know without testing if you can do a repair upgrade to force you back to release version but last time I tried that, pretty sure it failed.

Your 26120.2213 is an Insider Dev build - see here. You will not be able to go back to RP from here without a clean install.

Thanks for your reply - very much as I suspected.
I was on 24H2 without issues before the upgrade and signed up to exit RP so not sure why it offered to install the RP.

FYI -this is what VER shows for Windows 11 Insider Preview 10.0.26120.2213 (ge_release_upr).

I guess I'll be waiting on 25H2 ......... along with my Core Ultra fixes.

I guess time will tell. I recall seeing fresh install if you want to revert now but there was an option to leave it and catch up in time.

26120 is a Dev build (aka a Hotel California build - you can never leave)!

It is impossible to leave Dev without a clean install. Even when 25H2 comes along, Dev moves to 26H2 etc.

Last thing I remember, I was

Can you not simpply uninstall the update: - settings -> windows update -> update history. Uninstall updates option is at the bottom of that list.

Not necessarily. The 26120 Dev build is 26100 with an Enablement Package installed. On my Dev build that KB5037898 Enablement Package can be uninstalled.

....going down from 26120.2415 to 26100.2415. Then, after using OfflineInsiderEnroll.cmd to stop receiving Insider builds and un-enrol from Dev, a check for updates downloaded the KB5046740 preview update for the General Availability 24H2 channel, 26100.2454.

OK, Thanks. I guess I try creating a new backup, make sure I have all the files I need to do a clean install and then try different ways to kill "Hotel California" the last will be the WI get out now.

Unfortunately it failed to install, twice...

I then tried dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth but that too failed....

...followed by sfc /scannow which found nothing to repair.

Finally an in-place repair upgrade was tried.....

....and did the trick! The RTM CU KB5046740 now installs successfully.

The key to getting back to a completely standard 26100 24H2 build seems to be to do an in-place repair upgrade as the last step.

In-place repair put me back in the "hotel"
I used the latest 24H2 ISO and told windows to reinstall with keeping apps, which didn't allow checkout either. Finally, I tried to delete all but my personal stuff and that did the trick.
A pleasant surprise was Windows mostly cataloguing the apps it removed, some even had links to reinstall them.
