Updates

Oh my, I didn't even think about an AV, what a blonde moment for me. I did however, turn off the Ad blockers before manipulating all these updates and downloads.. I'll look to this and see if that will make a difference on all aspects...
Also, if you have the VPN that your security app provides, it might be a good idea to switch back to a more conventional internet connection.

??? Isn't all this hate and discontent proof enough that Windows Updates SUCK?
Fortunately, some people actually get along OK with Windows Updates, but not everyone.
In some cases an update can totally disable Windows, requiring professional REPAIR.
I know this, because for many years I was the one doing the Repair.

I did one great favor for myself, on my 12 PC's, and I've turned MS Updates OFF.
This little program does it, without any problems, and even allows Updates to be turned back ON, if ever required.

Blessed Be to you, TechnoMage2021; All hail TechnoMage2021!!! I agree that MicroSux does literally suck a big one, they've quite screwed the pooch on this endevour. I shall gratefully take the offering of this link and apply it to my laptop. Thus ending Mordor's evil and tyranny within my system...:eek1:o_O:oops:

I'm not thinking I've such an VPN but will look at that as well. I hardly use the VPN included with Google One, mostly do not use VPN in any extreme.

use gpedit to set updates to notify for install (disable auto updates). use wumgr to select and hide/install updates.

if your updates are messed on the backend, thewindowsclub has a Fix11 program that has repaired different errors for WU that i've encountered.

It is safer to install driver updates from the computer manufacturer's pages for your specific model. Those Intel updates screwed up my laptop in the past.
Generally, I don't use Windows Update to update my drivers. In fact, I have that option turned off.

That said, that doesn't address those "Optional drivers" listed under Windows Update. For those I go direct to the vendor and get them there; so, in that vein, I agree with you as once those drivers direct from the vendor are installed, those optional ones disappear if the same or newer.

There are 0 (zero) driver updates listed under Optional for my desktop cause I keep them updated myself via the hardware vendor. Of course, this is a custom-built PC, so I know all the hardware in it.

That's me.
