I used to have to maintain hospital images and machines based on Win 10 ltsc based on either 1607 or 1809 depending on use case.

As mentioned previously, these are limited to enterprise resellers, and while it's nice to not see the bloat of your standard Windows machine, they also have other limitations (at least the Win10 ltsc versions did) such as Office 365 not being usable and needing Office 2016, 2019, etc. install and license.

I know they had other quirks that I've blocked out of my mind due to using HPs crappy device management software, and also deal with win10 power scheme issues on the portable carts that had their own janky UEFI firmware issues...

You could have, for example, stayed on 22H2 until it was about to expire, then moved to 23H2, not 24H2. Then when 23H2 is about to go out of service, move to 24H2.

IDK I'm still running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS on one of my systems since 2016, it will go off support in 2026.

im using Debian with the cinnamon desktop, very windows 7 like.
Debian stable is about as long term as you can get Ubuntu is based on the Debian base.
but if someone is used to Windows the switch to Linux can take some effort.

I kind of did that. So maybe get a year and a half then. It's just change every year to 18 months is too fast. Even if it's 18 months, the new upgrade still comes out annually.

I wouldn't want to use Linux permanently. I have had the occasional one on a netbook or spare laptop, and as a netbook it was fine, but mostly it isn't that intuitive.

Windows 11 LTSC is only an evaluation version. It will work for 90 days before it needs to be activated. It requires a volume license key that is normally not available for home users.

That depends what you want to do with your computer and how trained you are to ride at the front of the wave.

Most users will not want to experiment with their one and only system and keep it working so they can do the work they have that equipment for.

Like writing text, making spreadsheets, gaming, editing photos, such things.
Not everybody has the desire to change his computer into a testing object.

I myself do some testing in a Virtual Box environment, but it's my only computer I do that on. I don't use any insider versions, never did. I would not dare to ruin that good functioning system, so I keep onto 23H2 until it is somewhat later in the year. And I would not be allowed to use my wife's system for experimenting purposes.

It may be more fun for you, but you can't expect every user to do the same.

Windows 10 and 11 have about 10 years of support as well. Your assumption here is correct, the LTSC version is not made available to the consumer directly. It's for special use cases.

i guess the annual feature updates don't bother me much. I don't jump into them right at the start, and I don't really want to be on an OS that stays exactly the same for 5+ years. Apple doesn't stay put forever, Linux doesn't stay put forever, I guess I wouldn't expect Windows to just sit idly by and not incorporate new things into the OS. And i've rarely had any major problems with the feature updates. On Windows 11, I had a problem on 1 of my devices that updated where DHCP wasn't working right after the update. I just put a static IP on that device, and called it a day. Everything else has been fine.

Welllll, I do OSD for a living, or a big chunk of my living, and I stay informed with Canary and Dev machines so I know what's coming. You're blazing on trails I already walked on.

They do have about 10 years of support, but they keep massively changing it annually! It's like a new Windows annually. It's all commercial competitiveness and not providing a stable system for people to just use and get work done. 23H2 is fine but - I wish they'd stop tinkering.

Already have a washing machine that connects to the internet but I didn't bother! Now a fridge that would take the food out, cook it and serve it up would be useful. I have checked out how much robots cost but they don't seem widely available or affordable to the public yet

Although there is a robot hoover that empties itself into a bag.

With computers though - we rely on them. I'm not a phone person really. A long time ago I went with - small phone - netbook for internet. Then phones got bigger and bigger (too big for a phone). Now I'm on smallest smartphone (which I can barely read) and laptop - because there aren't any netbooks!

It makes me laugh - it's logical isn't it - you can't have an all in one device - you need two. A phone that's too big to handle is not much use so why not make them smaller and have higher powered "netbooks"? Tablets are supposed to do that but not everyone likes tablets.
