Beats me! It
is rather strange though.

Perhaps e-sims are the way to go.
Some of the high end Samsungs have an esim and a dual nano sim BUT no SD card.
Samsung are obviously look to phase out SD cards by adding more internal storage (250 GB) so you rarely need to use one.
As it is now so fiddly to use SD cards (not like an external slot on old days), I guess that is inevitable.
Also headphone sockets are being phased out favouring bluetooth connections.
With inductive powering, eventually phones will have no external slots/ports, be esim only, and phones could become a totally sealed unit and be totally waterproof.
The downside will be if screen breaks or battery dies (which it will eventually), the phone could probably no longer be repaired.
Inductive powering is ok from home but not as convenient as plugging in to usb sockets when out and about, so you only need to carry a cable or small charger.
Also, backup of data would be via cloud services (at a lease cost of course) if you had no usb port or SD card.
I do not know how easy it is to transfer esim details to a new device but I bet it is not as easy as swapping nano sim to new phone along with all contacts on sim card (tbh I store them on my google account these days).
