I hate windows media player as it doesn't seem to work with some MKV's I get no sound or subtitles, is there a alternative as it seems to be so outdated.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

There are tons of alternatives (too many to list) both free and paid; you just need to research.

I myself use JRiver Media Center, but it's an audiophile type player that's a paid app.

I was also fed up with the windows mediaplayer and searched looked for a good free mediaplayer and find it and it became the Potplayer 64 bit and I love it, it can play all sort of music and a lot of films, you can find it on

My recommendation is Foobar2000..
its light weight but highly extensible with components..
with components you can play just about anything..
especially video game music files like SNES's spc files or Sega Genesis music files .vgm/.gym or Sony PlayStation 1&2 files .psf/.psf2 etc

Do be reminded Foobar 2000 has a learning curve as it's highly customizable to how you want it to look and function. Not an app for the faint of heart.

And no, I'm not saying it isn't a good app, I said it has a learning curve.

I'm pretty sure you can do that, I just use mine for music but there is a Remember Position in advanced settings.

I use MPC-HC for random audio files, Foobar2000 for for my music collection, and PotPlayer for videos. I think that Foobar2000 is simply the best, without all the fancy skins because it has tabs which I use for my music collection--a different tab for each decade of music. I've been using PotPlayer for many years and it will play absolutely anything. I run it as a portable.

MusicBee gave me what I wanted out of Foobar2000 but still couldn't get quite satisfactory even after trying various Column UI skins. MusicBee is outstanding. That said, I use MusicBee for my large music library. I continue to use Foobar2000 as the default audio player, for when I launch files from Explorer windows.

For video, VLC is my default player, while I use Kodi for my library. I also use Kodi for my music library, when I want to use the 10 foot interface. To clarify, when I'm sitting at my computer and playing music from my library, I'm using MusicBee. When I'm sitting on my sofa, I'm using Kodi.
