If I choose to test Windows 11, it's my decision. It's no skin off your nose, so why are you so adamant that those of us who choose to test aren't making sense?

I always run most advanced version of Windows at least in dual boot. Adopted W10 over W8.1 as main OS even while it was still insider version. My main PC is 100% compatible so why not ?

Mike similar things happened with a lot of the OG forum members when Win 7 came into existence

I was running Win7 on production systems about a year before it was released - Windows 8 only found a place on my systems as 8.1 and not long before it was replaced with 10

It was a reply to my post. It has nothing to do with testing Windows 11. It was about the people that think that because of the requirements of Windows 11 that we have to dump our old computers.

I like Windows 11 very, very much, but finally decided to get it soon after RTM only for one mainly-for-fun device. The other devices will wait, after reading a very well written post of yours Windows 365 whenever it comes for consumers, is also very attractive.

But Windows 10 is still plenty good, no dumping for years to come

The only flaw of Windows 11 is the system requirements. MS taking too far on that and it caused; the EOL of billions of incompatible PCs after EOL of Windows 10.

Maybe that's a calculated move of MS to sell cheap consumer subscriptions to Windows 365 in 2025

Windows 365 is in the cloud. You can RDP it with your Android tablet and use it as a very secure PC indeed, although you don't own the cloud PC, you 'rent' it.

Why should those users, who have up to date hardware, suffer an operating system that is less than it can be so it will run on old hardware.

Not everyone can drive the latest Ferrari and people accept that, {with some envy admittedly)

Windows 10 will run as it always has on the hardware it is running on now and it will likely continue after support ends, [and there is over four years of support planned]

We have to consider "What is old hardware in the IT field". Using Moore's law as a guide the hardware improves by a factor of two every 18 months [ the other components will improve to work with the processor]

The i7 Gen 7 was released at the start of January 2017 which is 55 months ago so the doubling of processing ability has happened three times since the release date.

There is some confusion of why the Gen7 was chosen as the cut off level by Microsoft, as the Gen6, Gen7, & Gen8 were basically evolutionary changes rather than revolutionary, but there is the Vista factor to be taken into account, when Vista was released the hardware sellers persuaded Microsoft to set the minimum hardware settings at around half of the real figures - and a lot of pc's running vista were "dogs" although on the correct hardware it was a good solid performer, especially after the major first update

unfortunately the IT industry has never been a fair and level playing field, the hardware and software is progressing at a pace set by the background technology improvement, not everyone has the ability to keep up with the changes

In reality, the world is not going to be overrun by piles of windows 10 systems abandoned because they cannot run Windows 11 Businesses' will upgrade their hardware and software when they are ready, the general user will upgrade when their hardware fails or fails to run the latest facebook or game or Zoom - and they will buy a device based on it's cost and aesthetic, this may not even be a windows device . Most general users asked what OS they run will reply "Windows" not anything more, and certainly not the build number

The enthusiast, including the members of this and other forums and technical sites will buy what they can afford, or source or use the hacks that always appear to run Windows and other software on unsupported hardware,

this is the way it has always been I can't see it changing now

Yeah, the more expensive Mac has an even shorter lifecycle, we are still lucky.

On the other end of the price range, there is also the non-Windows issue of the world moving towards the cheaper phones and tablets, that has caused and will further cause unused PCs being dumped.

PC's are recyclable items so "dumped" can be the wrong description to what happens when your no longer want your hardware, at least here in the UK

unfortunately there are issues with the exploitation of children in some less developed countries (mainly northern Africa ) where the motherboards are recycled by burning in the open air to recover the precious metals used in technology. This method of extraction is cheap but produces a lot of unwanted noxious gasses and other byproducts. these can actually cause serious illness or worse.

Where I live I have often left obsolete hardware outside the front of my property ready to take to the recycling centre and had a knock on the door from someone wanting to take the item away for reuse. of course not everyone bothers to ask but the recycling is still achieved.

Where possible I try to repurpose old working hardware by donating to charitable agencies who help those who cannot afford technology.

I've even had a Amazon delivery driver ask if They could have a Desktop case I'd placed "behind the Bins" ready for collection

I just gave my other PC (AMD FX 6350Be based) to friend's kids, even had an SSD in it. Had to buy a second hand GPU for it but that PC will be good for young kids for few years.

Not necessarily.

We dont yet know if the final win11 will install and run fine on older hardware, perhaps with a message that the older hardware wont be able take advantage of all the shiny extra new security features.

That wont negatively impact you.

My mother board just got and "upgrade" for BIOS, this is first time I have seen Asus even mentions W11.

By all accounts, only change is TPM (fTPM) enabled by default.

It's highly unlikely that MS will change the requirements for 11 to allow older hardware to use it. Older processors don't have the features to take advantage of the new security that 11 will offer.

Wow.. I got a new BIOS for my motherboard. Cool.. me happy

I personally think this is the wrong time to announce a new system with new equipment needed to update our computers with the shortage of chips memory processors and graphic cards. This is causing price hikes beyond a lot of peoples pockets also the shortages of materials is going to take some time to get back to normal.

No one has to use 11.. 10 will be around for some time. As for memory.. there's lots of it available and much of it is at a reasonable price

Given the issue with hacking of systems lately it's about time that MS came out with these new requirements.
