Why Has No One Mentioned The Prospect Of Dumping Millions Of Incompatible Machines ?

Mine is salt free from my air popper. I also have a popper I can use with oil and seasonings. I have BP issues too.
Whats all this issue with British Petroleum (BP on NYSE) - can anybody explain to me !!!

Hi there

@24c

Maybe my English has got off track here but isn't BP some sort of big oil company -- British Petroleum I think -- but I think even some of those are being forced to "Go Greener" decently without sending everybody back into world wide poverty.

However I think we should get back on topic as there's loads of other forums to discuss climate change and other environmental issues.

Cheers

Hi there

I'm sure my blood pressure rises when I see loads of politicians trying to get ordinary people to cough up zillions more USD/EUR/GBP for their energy / other utility bills etc for unproven and untested "Pseudo Environmental issues" - put the facts before the public who aren't nearly as stupid as most people think !!

Anyway I've said enough on this so enjoy rest of day / evening !!!"

@Wynona

Cathode Ray tubes were great to get rid of -- loads of X-Rays -- not particularly benign to "Humans" - especially pregnant women, loads of other nasty heavy metals and a lot of old Glassware made with more lead - a substance even the most agnostic of "Climate Change" people would agree is best left totally for Nuclear fission screening etc !!!!

If you have to chuck things old CRT's are one of the best to get rid of !!!

Modern LCD's use a lot of "Rare Eaths" -- rather misnamed as they aren't "Earth's" at all and aren't particularly rare in the scheme of things. They use a lot less power as well (electricity generation is still a big polluter) - so if you want to attack waste then not wanting to dump old CRT's I'm afraid is going down the wrong alley.

Hint "never get into "Environmental issues with Icelanders !!!!" You'll for sure always lose big time !!!!

Cheers
jimbo
You totally missed my point. It wasn't about should we get rid of them or not. It was about people discarding working television only because they want high definition flat screen TVs. Watching a old cathode-tube TV is not going to destroy the environment. Not properly deposing of them can do a lot of damage.

On April 20, 2010, the oil drilling rig Deepwater Horizon, operating in the Macondo Prospect in the Gulf of Mexico, exploded and sank resulting in the death of 11 workers on the Deepwater Horizon and the largest spill of oil in the history of marine oil drilling operations.

Hi there

@24c
I have to agree - but that's's not my argument -- we all know WHAT's to be done but HOW to do it without bankrupting average and poorer people with rediculous prices while CEO's etc walk away with huge bonuses etc -- and I'm no socialist BTW -

I like Stock exchange etc but we need some measure these days of decent ethical investment and not so much difference between CEO's at top and lower paid people.

Ms is actually quite good in contributing to decent ethical causes and nobody can accuse the Bill Gates foundation of being a nasty Provider.

I wasn't getting any more involved in this but that last comment on BP just shows I think people are just Out to get the Oil Companies regardless of what they are actually doing these days. Shell for example wants to go wholly green in future -- OK it takes a while but we can't all switch off Fossil fuels as from Monday Morning.

Sensible strategies are what's needed and charging people on 20,000 USD a year a less an extra 300 or 400 USD a year on their energy bills while CEO's still get several million and huge bonuses and pension pots doesn't help the cause however worthy it is.

Last time I was in the USA (only 3 years ago) even trying to find a Gas Station which could supply LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas -- contains Propane and Butane mix and current cars and trucks can use it easily with small modifications to engine) -- not 100% green I agree but infinitely more environmentally friendly than standard Gasoline or Diesel was almost next to impossible.

Beware of arguing Green Topics with Icelanders -- You'll ALWAYS LOSE !!!!!!/

Cheers
jimbo

Hi there

@24c
(snip)

Last time I was in the USA (only 3 years ago) even trying to find a Gas Station which could supply LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas -- contains Propane and Butane mix and current cars and trucks can use it easily with small modifications to engine) -- not 100% green I agree but infinitely more environmentally friendly than standard Gasoline or Diesel was almost next to impossible.

(snip)
Infinitely?

From the carbon point of view, propane (C3H8) and butane (C4H10) are not very environmentally friendly. The hydrogen/carbon ratio of gasoline is roughly 2:1 (2 H atoms per C). Both propane and butane are worse, which suggests that they'd get more of their fuel value from carbon. US fossil fuel power plants have been switching to natural gas, which is mostly methane (CH4). There are obviously other considerations with gasoline, like sulfur. (US gasoline seems to have a lot of sulfur, at least in the winter months. Based on the smell of SO2.)

Internal combustion should be avoided altogether, if you don't like oxides of nitrogen. (At high combustion temperatures, nitrogen and oxygen combine.)

If you wanna go off topic some more, I'd be happy to help. ;)

Too bad that geothermal energy isn't as readily available in the US as it is in Iceland.

I feel like a lot of people think that they *have* to have Windows 11 or else. This isn't exactly the case. Windows 10 still has official support from Microsoft until 2025 and will likely have third party support until 2030... and regardless, by the time we get to that date your 6 year old unsupported computer will be a 10 year old mostly obsolete computer.

Who are you calling obsolete ?

The machine I am typing this from is already 10 yrs old. It might not be ideal for those who want to play kiddie shoot em up games, or the tiny number of people who spend all day encoding high def video. For many people it does everything they want with ease. I could use this happily for many years yet.

Of course, we think we must have Windows 11! After all, we're Geeks! :geek:

Yes, Windows 10 will be around until at least until 2025 (I'm not guessing how much longer than that.) for those whose current computers don't support Windows 11. And I will continue teaching Windows 10 until my senior citizen students decide to upgrade (90% have qualifying computers).

I do foresee that I will most likely need to create a Windows 11 class for my current students within the next year. These guys and gals are not your typical senior . . . they like to get into new stuff and live dangerously!

And I will most likely continue to dual boot this computer (This ain't no device, Microsoft!) between Windows 10 and Windows 11 for years to come. That way I can continue teaching both operating systems.

whether it suits any one of us as an individual is not the important thing, the fact is that there are people who do need a Computer to perform the tasks as you mentioned. Now, the industry has always strived for improvements in performance to meet the needs of users in the present and into the future - this is a normal human way to be.

Now as hardware standards and components improve and their capabilities increase then software has to change and improve to work with the current and future hardware. their comes a time when the current software is incompatible with older hardware, there is then a time that those who only need the power of the old systems have to use older software the serious issue with this is that security is an essential these days and security software and hardware does not support older hardware/software for as long as it might

LOL! Yes, but I need sound reasons to upgrade. New and cosmetically different alone aren't compelling enough.

Apparently a lot of people don't think like you because the amount of people angry their 3rd gen i7 can't run Windows 11 is large.

I'm curious as to what fraction of the world population, or even the US population, has even heard of Windows 11. Forum denizens probably aren't typical.

I mentioned 11 to a female friend. She said that she couldn't possibly care less. Just wants to use computing hardware with as little a learning curve as possible. (I believe that her iPad is the favorite. She also has an iPhone and a Windows 10 laptop.)

There's a lot of hype re: security. There would be little prestige in hacking these half billion Windows 7 users, whose activities probably are no riskier now than when Windows 7 was MS' blue eyed boy. Software that is mainstream today does little more than it did 12 or more years ago, and certainly not faster than it did then, although it could. It only takes five minutes to install Office 97 Pro on a machine Running 10 or 11, and most of that time is deselecting stuff you don't want, like Fast Find, Clipart and Clippy. Winword 97 flashes up in a second, and there's lots more screen space for your documents, the document files are tiny, and although Winhlp32 doesn't work any longer, I don't need it since I have had 24 years to get used to using it! The documents print with exactly the same quality as Office 365, and using print to PDF, the files are identical in output. Same with Excel - spreadsheets and graphing still can look the same, using tiny, fast-loading files. There won't be much e-waste, than there is normally, since people won't be frightened into scrapping their devices that remain fit for their purpose. Enterprises will have the same rate of turnover of hardware, and hopefully a good percent will be repurposed, rather than recycled, but even recycling is becoming more important, as natural resources diminish and waste piles up. Modern e-waste contains much smaller and fewer components too, compared to older monster PCBs populated with through mount components rather than SMDs. Windows is not the only fruit!
