win 10 and 11 dualboot mounting/hiding different drives

Hi,


I have win10 installed on a "non removable" NVME on a desktop machine. (obviously it can be taken out, but t's a pain to remove every time I boot into Win11)

I am also running Win11 from another HDD on that same box.

For security reasons, I don't want my Win11 to see my NVME as well as two other SSDs that I am using with my Win10.

Meaning my Win11 system should only see the partitioned hard drive it is installed on (I partitioned that HDD into a system and a data drive)
I also don't want my Win10 to see my the HDD that has Win11 and the data drive I created to be used with that system.

Basically I want to keep system drive and data drives between the two OS completely separate.

I know I can unmount, but from what I understand that's doe in the mount point of the drive and therefore wouldn't be different depending on what system I boot into.

How do I solve this issue?

There is a Registry key to hide a drive, but I don't remember it. I think you can do it with Winaero Tweaker. However, you can simply search for Disk Manager and remove the drive letter. Click on the partition you want to hide, right-click and select to add or change the drive letter. Then remove it. I am not sure but it might also be an option to hide the specific partition so no application can see it.

Basically you can't do that. Remove the win10 stick(s).
Is win11 on a HDD (spindle drive) or an ssd or an nvme?

BIOS, grub, and windows are designed to detect and mount everything that is connected to the mobo.

You could disable the drive in BIOS, but Windows 10 and 11 will detect it anyway. To avoid using it the only way is to hide the partition or remove the drive letter.

thanks. yes, I know about the diskmanager option, but AFAIK that sets a flag on the drive, rather than being specific to each OS?

Meaning I'd have to hide / unhide each drive manually everytime?

Looks like that registry trick only hides them in explorer, but they are still accessible through the OS if u know the path.

What I am trying to do is have each OS separate in a way, that if one gets a virus/hacked, it cannot affect the other

There are a couple of solutions that I can think of:

1) BitLocker encrypt drives you don't want the other OS to have access to. Then that OS will not be able to access those drives or partitions unless you unlock them.

2) In the OS, open Disk Management and offline any disks that you don't want that OS to have access to.

They may be some other ways but I would have to test those.

    The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

Regarding changes in Disk Manager, those are permanent, you don't have to do it every time. Just do them once in each Windows version.

That's what I did on my dual boot setup and you're correct. I only had to hide the drives one time.

Just to make sure you understand it, load Windows 10 and hide the Windows 11 partition. Then restart in Windows 11 and hide the Windows 10 partition, so either version cannot access the other, just like you want. The change is done once, no need to do it every time.

Another method: If the systems are on different physical disks, load Windows 10 and disable the Windows 11 disk in Device Manager. Then restart to Windows 11 and disable the Windows 10 disk in Device Manager.
