Windows 11 24H2 has new hardware requirements.?


I have read a few articles where Windows 11 24H2 now requires a minimum of an Intel 11th Generation processor. When Windows 11 was first released, it was compatible with 8th generation processors.

My laptop (system #1) has a 10th generation Intel i7 processor. I was able to upgrade to 24H2 without issues a few months ago. Now wondering when 25H2 rolls around if this laptop will be considered unsupported? Well, I have almost 2 years before 24H2 reaches EOL

Yes (for anyone reading) for 24H2 you need to have an SSE4.2 capable CPU.
You can bypass TPM2 requirements, but without a CPU supporting SSE4.2 you can not run 24H2

25H2 is yet to be seen.

Unfortunately, we have yet another article which misrepresents the 24H2 HW requirements list.

In short, your 10th generation CPU is supported. Several tech sites have clear problems with basic reading comprehension, and cannot bother to read the fine print in the original MS support document.
The processors listed represent the processor models which meet the minimum floor for the supported processor generations and up through the latest processors at the time of publication. These processors meet the design principles around security, reliability, and the minimum system requirements for Windows 11.

Don't panic. MS is only stating the oldest processors which are supported, they don't have time to list every single CPU released after the oldest ones in the provided list.

In the article I posted, it did mention that users could still upgrade those 8th to 10th gen systems to 24H2. Several other publications were saying those processors would no longer be supported in 24H2. I'm having no issues on my 10th gen system that has 24H2.

There is a lot of incorrect information out there regarding Windows 11, especially when creating a local account on Win Pro 24H2 (which is what I installed 2 days ago)

I found 5 different ways to bypass the ms account and internet requirements across 5 websites and none of them worked. Luckily I found the information in a 55 second YouTube video. Absolutely exhausting. Sorry I veered off topic a bit here.

All of which (TPM2 Bypass and Local Account) could have been done in the time in which it takes to burn an ISO onto a USB stick, using RUFUS (Latest Version 4.6)

My Last PC Build was a Gen 3 i7 3770k It lasted me Windows 7 I skipped 8 and 8.1 then went to Windows 10 right up until 2 days ago. So 13 years of Windows on the one PC. I don't like these CPU requirements. But I feel this is the way of the future.

No doubt the next windows we will all need new hardware.

that i7 3770k has SSE4.2 so a Rufus made install USB would be able to upgrade Win10 to Win11 24H2.
with the USB attached to the system open explorer and browse to the USB drive. then double click the 'setup.exe' file.

this will do an in place install upgrade of Win 10 to Win 11 24H2. i have done this upgrade to a Win 10 install in VM on a Linux system.

I’ve not known this to work with an in-place upgrade. If the PC lacks the SSE4.2, 24H2 wont play. Unless I’ve missed something somewhere. If it worked on a VM, I wouldn’t know but you says it does so I believe it. But as I say, I’ve not heard of it working as an in-place natively in Windows 11

My mistake sorry, Steve, I read it as you saying the CPU doesn’t have SSE4.2, where as you said it does. Yeah, RUFUS would smash it in there.

I recently had trouble with a system that was supposed to be complient with W11. It had been running W11 and I forgot the hdd password. So I downloaded an ISO of the Windows from the official Microsoft website of W11 24H2 and it wouldn't load. The Athlon 3000G has SSE4.2 and so did the Ryzen 5600G that I fitted to the motherboard, and using another hdd but Windows said the hardware was not compatible. I eventually remembered the password and W11 started as normal, updated from 22H2 to 24H2 and still is ok after returning the Athlon 3000G. I will be making a clone of the C drive to keep just in case and have removed the password requirement. Nobody knew how to make Windows load afresh without forcing it.
So in my case, W11 24H2 did upgrade from an earlier version, but wouldn't load afresh.
