Windows 11 24H2 has new hardware requirements.?


I have read a few articles where Windows 11 24H2 now requires a minimum of an Intel 11th Generation processor. When Windows 11 was first released, it was compatible with 8th generation processors.

My laptop (system #1) has a 10th generation Intel i7 processor. I was able to upgrade to 24H2 without issues a few months ago. Now wondering when 25H2 rolls around if this laptop will be considered unsupported? Well, I have almost 2 years before 24H2 reaches EOL

Apparently the reasoning behind MS setting the bar at 8th gen and above is native support for mode-based execution control, lacking in earlier generations.

“The strategy for the initial release of Windows 11 is very simple: raise the baseline. Turn on the things that were optional in Windows 10 by default,” Weston said.

One example is a feature called mode-based execution control, which—in tandem with Intel’s eighth-gen CPUs and up—helps to ensure optimal performance while running certain virtualization-based security protections, he said.

While older CPUs can emulate hypervisor-protected code integrity, MS think the performance hit would be unacceptable...

What Microsoft did mention in the posts is virtualization-based security, as well as hypervisor-protected code integrity, or HVCI.....

....Mode-based execution control is a critical underpinning to the optimal use of HVCI. The feature is what ensures that running HVCI doesn’t deliver a major hit to performance and user experience.

HVCI can still work with processors that don’t support mode-based execution control—but those processors depend on an emulation of the feature, “which has a bigger impact on performance,” Microsoft said in July documentation about HVCI.

The infallible way BAR NONE to bypass the Ms account on Win 11 Pro above and others is at the "Work / School /home choice for computer at the OOBE stage is to choose school / work and at sign in option choose Domain join (you don't need a domain).

I don't know about W11 Home -- don't have it, don't care about it, don't want it) but W11 Pro, education, workstation, enterprise, iot enterprise this method works perfectly -- just did one this morning 24 Mar.

Still works and is 100% Ms way - no registry hacks, special Rufus install versions etc etc.

Absolutely FORGET Reddit (probably the most useless I.T site ever since the days from the invention of the abacus), or 99% of incoherent mumbling youtube ad ridden videos and large % of google search results.

W11 Forums is easily the best source for anything technical on Windows 11 (and a lot more besides). Thanks @z3r010 for maintaining this brilliant site (plus the sister ones).

Home has no support for joining a domain, so this trick doesn't work for them.

The requirement for Intel 8th gen processors cannot be simply the power, I checked some of the Passmark Software cpu scores and a Celeron 6305 which is approved has a score of 1196 and my laptops i3 6100U is 2638, more than double the power.

Correct - Not just about the power ;-)

It's actually many things making up today's CPU's and not all is readily available to compare. Example both my i7-6700K, and 19-9900K both list the same instruction sets on Intel's site - Intel® SSE4.1, Intel® SSE4.2, Intel® AVX2, yet when you take a closer look at the Advanced Technologies section, you'll notice differences - Intel® Trusted Execution Technology supported on the i9-9900K (Win 11 Supported), and NOT supported on the i7-6700K (no Win 11 support). Intel® Trusted Execution Technology is another supported on the I9-9900K, not on the i7-6700K.

I'm sure there's other stuff both known, and not known as to why one does support 11, and the other doesn't, so... 🤷‍♂️

It's currently multi-booting RTM 24H2 and Insider builds up to Canary 27818.1000.

Yes (for anyone reading) for 24H2 you need to have an SSE4.2 capable CPU.
You can bypass TPM2 requirements, but without a CPU supporting SSE4.2 you can not run 24H2

25H2 is yet to be seen.

I lucked out once again. All three of my computers, desktop and two laptops, qualify so far. This is probably the last time but I'll just have to stick with the Windows 11 24H2.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

My main PC (2nd system specs) has a 3rd generation Intel Core-i7 has SSE4.2 instructions, so it runs Windows 11 24H2. Of course I had to bypass compatibility check to install. Without bypassing you need 8th generation Intel Core CPU or 2nd generation AMD Ryzen irrespective of version. Bypassing compatibility check your car install Windows 11 21H2, 22H2 and 23H2 to any 64-bit CPU that can install Windows 8 64-bit. Yes, even on an Intel Pentium 4 64-bit. To install 24H2 additionally you need a CPU with SSE4.2 which means any Intel Core CPU, even the 1st generation Intel Core-i3 or higher.

I'm currently running an old HP AIO that has an Intel i3 4th generation processor. circa 2015 with no TPM. I did upgrades from Windows 10 to earlier versions of 11 but had reverted back to Windows 10. Recently, I decided to do an in-place upgrade from Win 10 to 11 24H2 using the "product server" work around. I'll stick with 24H2 on that old machine just to get a few more years out of it. If and when 25H2 comes out, I'll give that a try.

I just installed Windows 11 Pro 24H2 in VMware Workstation Pro yesterday. I installed it with a local account.

I disconnected the Internet in the VM settings before I started.
During setup I typed
Shift + F10 and type
OOBE\BYPASSNRO.

For setup type I selected Personal Use (Home)

It worked the same when I installed Windows 11 Home 24H2 in VMware Workstation Pro except no setup type.

I knew it worked when I saw this

The command oobe\bypassnro works in all Windows versions, Home, Pro, Pro for Workstations, Education, Enterprise. There was a bug in some recent Canary (Beta) version that you could not press SHIFT+F10 at first boot, but after restart it worked. Also I have read that the bug is fixed in latest Canary version. Needless to day that for the command to work you must be DISCONNECTED from the internet. You cannot trick Windows you have no internet if you are already connected!

Microsoft has confirmed that soon it will start testing a fresh set of behind-the-scenes platform updates for Windows 11 through new builds in the 26200 range, now available to Insiders (early testers community) in the Dev Channel. These early tests are believed to be laying the foundation for version 25H2, which is expected to roll out later this year.

I'm guessing just as most of the bugs (or undocumented random features 😂) get smoothed out in 24H2 they'll hit us with 25H2.

    Legacy MBR installation, no TPM, no Secure Boot, no WDDM 2.0 graphics drivers, no SSE4.2, cannot get more unsupported ;) This is only my test laptop. I had installed Windows 11 here before upgrading my main PC. For my main PC I use everyday see my 2nd system specs.
