Windows 11 Films & TV App Problem

Windows 11 Home. Win Version 23H2
Morning.
All my mp4 files folders on my Windows 11 pc (family videos, slideshows etc) have opened when I clicked on Films and Tv
Everything mp4 on my pc, lots of themlol
However today it is just shoing movies etc to buy. So I have to find a file on my pc and click on it individually.
Went into default programs and MP4 files are still set to open in Films and TV
What else can I try?

I have VLC but use it mainly for editing photos.
Cant understand why my media doesnt show since yesterday in Films & TV though As not done anything different

Is your Store set to update apps automatically? In newer versions of Films & TV (aka Movies & TV outside the UK) the 'Personal' tab has been removed (in particular, for all the Insider builds). If it's missing for you then Films & TV can no longer play local video files.

If so I know of no way to revert the Films & TV app to an earlier version. A viable alternative to using Films & TV that's built in to Windows is Media Player. Try setting that as the default.

When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Thanks but I cant get that one to work.
In Films & Tv when I clicked on it it displayed all th hndredsof Family videos & Slideshows I created all together.
Cant understand as it was fine yesterday.
I have gone into default programs & seleted Films & TV to open all my MP4s. But no change.
Not got a clue if Apps Auto Update sorry. I never mess with settings

This might well fix it.
See option #2 in this tutorial. Go down to the list of file types and download the reg/bat file that will set the mp4 file type to it's default.

Why not simply use VLC - then problem solved - almost every codec in the known universe both audio and video works including HEVC stuff.

It tells me that you have build 10.0.24081.1011.0 and that it doesn't have the 'Personal' tab required for playing your own video files. That's actually a newer build than my example in post #4. Your only option now is to set something else as the default. The built in Media Player looks and behaves almost the same as the older Films & TV, it's an acceptable alternative as the default.

By default the Store automatically installs App updates. To turn this off click on the user icon at the top right and select Settings.

I believe now, Microsoft Films & TV (as far as I know) is for the purpose of Buying or Renting videos. As per it’s website version.

You can uninstall it from your PC.

The App I would be using if I wanted to catalog and view my personal movies would be Media Player that Bree mentions. They are two different apps.

Do you mean you don't know how to use it or it just wont work?


Open search Win key + S
Type Media Player
Right click and select Uninstall

Go to Microsoft Store
Search Media Player
Click install

Actually, you can reset or Repair the Media Player App.

Open Settings > Apps > Installed Apps
Wait for the Apps to load
Scroll down to Media Player
Click on the 3 dots on the right of the App name
Select Advanced Options
Scroll down the page and select either Repair or Reset

Click on the 3 dots on the right of the App name

Ok but is this the same as the old Windows media player? Never did like that one. If I can't use Films and TV which one had the same interface so I can see all my home videos on one display?

Media Player is a new replacement for the old media player. The old media player is now named Windows Media Player Legacy and is an optional feature.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

In full screen, both hide the controls. I’ve not yet found a difference less that media player also has your music which is convenient.
I can’t remember if it did in films and tv. Going by the name, most likely not.

Like everything else, it’s evolved. I think Media Player is one of the apps that Microsoft is getting right.

I use PLEX though lol
