Further, think security, IP, mil/gov/edu/corp... there are many installations that by policy/edict cannot or MUST not connect to any external networks (think of a SCIF for example). Standalone/offline installs will be the only option for some systems, indefinitely.

I certainly have enough room on my SSD - in fact 10 times the minimum you quote. The trick, however, is resizing the drive non-destructively. probably I should have used LVM and previously, I had it formatted BTRFS but not after alsmost losing the whole in a botched (not by me) kernel update. It did a number on everything (including a separate drive(but not on the software RAID 0 which houses my VMs and maybe an image of the /dev/sda if and when I get around to it), But thanks for the rep;ly. Have a great holiday weekend a[[arently the Windows Canary devs will party it up.

I gave up on BTRFS ages ago -- and I avoid LVM as well - more trouble than its worth. I find XFS a virtually unbreakable file system on Linux.

As for the Canary build -- I suppose like Coalmines - a vanishing species.

Yeah. BTRFS did not t save my system when I had a kernel crash (going to kernel 6.3 actually). I really have never used LVM but it is an option if my system crashes. But more likely I will install Debian 12. But more a discussion for the linux part of this site.
Canary? We will see Weds of next week (maybe).

I agree ZDNET is usually a whole load of "Bow Locks" . Even if that were to be true -- unlikely in my opinion -- at least unlikely for non enterprise systems -- you still have to have some sort of an OS to be able to connect to the cloud, validate the users credentials and validate the hardware infrastructure for connecting local devices. So some type of Virtual Desk top Infrastructure or VDI. I doubt whether the cost and complexity of doing that for the zillions of different hardware types that domestic users have on their machines would be a viable proposition. This is definitely a case where economics trumps technology -- nothing wrong in principle with a cloud provided infrastructure but it's got to be fit for purpose and cost effective,

'Fraid for once - the bean counters have it right and the tech journos wrong.

I can see where cloud computing could be beneficial for some. As a home user I wouldn't see any benefits from using cloud computing. Another problem is internet access. Just in the area where I live there are many areas that don't have high speed internet. The people have to depend on either dial-up or satellite. Even using cell phones is not the answer because some areas have very weak to zero signal strength. As I have stated before, I'm not against cloud computing as long as it's an option and not made mandatory.

I just don't see what cloud computing would be beneficial to home user with a powerful PC. Internet for me at least shouldn't be the problem, soon I'm getting fiber optic 150Mbps speed and 1000Mbps possible for moderate cost.

There is zero chance that Windows 12 will be only a cloud computing platform. Hell, I can do cloud computing now with VMware if I want to spend the bucks and time.

I'd be screwed if it was cloud only, we get power glitches here all the time because of the moronic Wind Tower grid...,
takes my stupid modem 30 minutes to reboot!

As for power glitches, we finally got a generator with a 500 [rp[ame tank/ It should be good until winter. Of course, now we have thunderstorms which are the main way we lose power.

Heh. We used to have regular power outages for various reasons. In Dec 2019 I had a whole house generator installed and since then the power has not gone out once.....
