Windows 11 KB5019765 (insider Dev channel) forced me back to Windows 10.

For those interested, I found myself reverting my unsupported (i7-7600U Processor) Lenovo laptop back to Windows 10 after a year of running the Insiders Dev channel of Windows 11 Pro. Seems the last update hosed my system to the point that it became unstable.

Issue 1) – Edge would instantly crash after being opened for a few seconds.
Issue 2) – Overall system performance suddenly dropped to becoming extremely sluggish.

So, here’s where things got interesting…. So, after doing a PC reset in hopes of fixing whatever was ailing my system. This was something I was planning on doing anyway as I'd always intended to go back to 1o on this laptop. Also, because I had no Win 10 system. That said, after the reset, I was somewhat surprised I was still on the Dev channel of Windows 11 (wasn’t sure if the system would revert back to 10 or stay on 11 – PC came with 10). At any rate, after all the updates I was sitting at build 25217.100 (rs prerelease).

So now the interesting stuff…

Issue 1) Edge would no longer flat out crash when opened; however, it would flash a black screen whenever a link was even moused over (have a video). It would also constantly flicker without any input. Additionally, parts of the page would flash a dark green overlay (usually after start-up). Yeah, a real mess.

Issue 2) even more baffling was Windows Security where even though there was an icon in the system tray, it was unresponsive (clicking it did nothing). Even more odd was you could right click it and get options to do stuff, but clicking those links brought up a dialogue box alerting you of dead links and sending you to the Microsoft store for a fix (have video).

Issue 3) – System response was even worse as clicking anything resulting in long delays or no responses at all unless clicked several times.

Issue 4) – Not sure what to make of this but when Windows booted to the desktop wallpaper was a black background with a reddish/bluish gold a fish (guppy?) as the screen image. Not sure what that’s about???

All that said, given issues 1,2, & 3. I was forced to wipe the drive start anew with Windows 10 Pro. All good now, and the laptop is a lot snappier now with no Edge or Defender issues. Given all that, two thoughts came to mind – virus? (not likely as I have strict security habits, but...) Or Microsoft making good on the threat that unsupported systems would become unstable (and thus my post here).

Anyway, Just FYI in case someone had/has a similar issue after this last update. Inputs also welcomed. Laptop specs listed under system two. BTW, I’m also running Windows 11 Pro on my fully supported main system (system one) and have no issues there. Currently on 22H2.

Thoughts?

Only that I wouldn't contemplate running a Dev build on any machine I'd want to rely on. My unsupported Lenovo Yoga 11e (System Four in the 'Other Info' section of my specs) is running the Beta 22623.741 build without issues.

Mine ran with without issues for a year before this last update. And just as you, this isn't a PC I "rely on", and why I went with the Dev channel on it. And mine is a Lenovo Yoga X1.

The Edge crash issue reported above is also affecting my backup system running the Win 11 Dev channel - Open Edge and about 30 seconds later it will instantly close.

However, no issues with my fully support desktop running Windows 11 RTM (22H2). These issues have only occurred on my Dev insiders build.

Apparently, this isn't new - Microsoft Edge crashes immediately.

Why go back to W10 though - as you say W11 22H2 is fine on other device?

Windows 11 RTM is fine on my fully hardware supported desktop. On now two unsupported (CPU) machines, Windows 11 Insiders has become unstable. With that, I need a laptop I can depend on when I return to school, and Windows 10 is it there.

Will I attempt to put 11 back on it, probably; but I need to figure out why the sudden issues with now two insider machines with unsupported hardware (CPU). Never had any issues at all and all of a sudden both machines pop up with issues after the latest updates. Meanwhile 11 RTM is as stable as a rock on my main desktop.

All that said, there was always the plan to return to 10 if Microsoft made true of their promise unsupported machines would have issues. Not so sure that isn't happening now, but....

I think it must be something specific to your machine, not a general issue for unsupported devices.

I have Windows 11 22H2 running on (currently) four quite different unsupported laptops, in addition to my two supported ones.

Three are on the RTM 22621 build, one is on the Beta build and has just updated to 22623.746 released today. All run without issues - even the ridiculously inappropriate one (if it runs on that it should run on anything!).

Here's a thought:

Start off by installing Windows 10 as your primary OS, just as you are doing now. Then install Windows 11 to a VHDX for dual boot.

What I like about this method is how easy it is to clean up since Windows 11 is entirely contained in a single VHDX file.

Thanks. That's an option I could look into later. But for now, I'm good with Windows 10 being on the laptop. And I still have the backup system with 11 Insiders. Just need to figure out what's causing my issues under both machines.

I would agree if it wasn't now two different machines as posted running the same insider's dev versions with the same Edge issues. Additionally, I just got notified on the backup system that a driver couldn't be started because Core Isolation was complaining. Never had that before either. Had to disable Core Isolation to rid the notice. Quite odd as I've never had any issues before.

Apart from one machine I use as a test machine, all my unsupported devices run Windows 11 that way as a dual boot. It means that their original W10 remains untouched, should W11 ever become unuseable on an unsupported device.

Well, I like my OSs and apps running on the machine itself, not in a VM or container of any sorts. I don't even use VMs. Thats me.

More likely than a virus, would be the SSD or classic HDD heading down the toilet. SSDs can fail just like that! (extreme slowness) Same with some laptop HDDs.

Could be, though a failing SSD/HDD wouldn't be OS specific, meaning the system is running much better since cleaning installing 10. If it was an HDD/SSD the OS wouldn't matter.

That said, it seems my issue is unique, even though the same weird anomalies are happening on different machines running the same Insiders Dev version so.... I just thought I'd ask if others have seen the issue, and also wonder if this is an example of Microsoft's claim unsupported systems may have issues.

Anyway, my post was more FYI, than anything else.

The only thing that's 'virtual' is the hard drive, the .vhdx is mounted at boot before the OS loads from it. The OS is NOT in any way running 'virtualised'. It is running directly on the physical hardware like any other install.

Just a side note, but I didn't realize how much of a drain on my laptop Windows 11 Dev was, but since moving back to Windows 10 Pro on it the laptop has never a lot snappier and more efficient with battery life.

I say that because I usually keep it on a charger because after about 2 hours constant use, it's usually down to about 20 percent left. I noticed last night it was sitting at about 60 percent left after about 3 hours use. I say noticed because I realized I never plugged in the charger.

Point - I guess on some systems a betaware OS on unsupported hardware can be draining on resources, and one may not notice how much until things are returned back to normal - supported OS (Windows 10) on supported hardware.

And please, I love Windows 11 and would have it on the laptop now, but my system seemed to get slower and slower as time moved one until I had major issues forcing me back to 10. And for the record, I'm running Windows 11 Pro RTM my main fully supported system (system one) without issue and have NO intentions of going back to Windows 10 on it. None! Even my unsupported backup system is running Windows 11 Insiders.

I'm sure everyone will tell me their unsupported systems are fine with 11, and trust me, I would have said the same (said the same), but unfortunately my experiences changed over time.

Anyway, the laptop (system two) is running much better now that it has a "supported" OS on it.

If it was me, I'd be worrying about the "guppy" on the screen.
